Magmasaur Metal Runs: When It Beats an Ankylosaurus (and When It Doesn’t)

Yes—Magmasaurs are excellent metal gatherers in ARK. They are especially valuable on dangerous, spread-out or volcanic routes where staying mounted, moving quickly and carrying a large load matters more than achieving the lowest possible ore weight. An Ankylosaurus still has the better listed metal weight reduction, so the best creature depends on how your route, transport plan and base are set up.

What makes a metal gatherer “good”?

Metal runs are not decided by harvest rate alone. A practical mount must let you reach nodes, survive the route, carry the result and get home without turning every trip into a hauling exercise. Five factors matter:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Gathering efficiency: how much metal the creature obtains from a node.
  • Inventory reduction: how much the collected metal weighs while it is in the creature’s inventory.
  • Mobility: whether the mount can move between separated nodes and retreat from danger.
  • Route safety: whether lava, fire and predators force you to dismount or take a longer path.
  • Logistics: whether you can transport the creature to the mining area and unload it efficiently.

Magmasaur performs well across the first four categories. Ankylosaurus is usually superior in the second category, which can decide the result when your only goal is bringing back the greatest amount of raw metal per trip.

Magmasaur and Ankylosaurus: the numbers that matter

The ARK Official Community Wiki rates both creatures at the top displayed tier for metal gathering. Their inventory reductions are different, however. The following figures are the values listed by that wiki, accessed in 2026.

Category Magmasaur Ankylosaurus What it means on a run
Metal gathering efficiency ★★★★★ ★★★★★ Both occupy the highest displayed efficiency tier.
Metal weight reduction in its inventory 75% 85% An Ankylosaurus can carry the same raw metal at a lower inventory cost.
Volcanic-route capability Lava and fire immunity; rider protection while mounted No equivalent Magmasaur protection is listed Magmasaur can keep a dangerous volcanic route practical.
Mobility between nodes High mobility is a stated advantage Transport-dependent in many setups Magmasaur loses less time repositioning between separated deposits.
On-route processing Can smelt metal in melting mode Not identified as an on-route smelter Magmasaur can return with ingots instead of only ore, subject to food cost.
Pickup by Argentavis or Karkinos Cannot be picked up by either Not identified as having this restriction Magmasaur transport must be planned around its size and the available route.

The wiki’s Magmasaur entry says its increased mobility, weight capacity and “apex” status can let it exceed an Ankylosaurus in practical metal gathering. Its metal page, however, calls Ankylosaurus the most efficient metal gatherer and lists the higher reduction. These statements describe different priorities rather than a contradiction: one evaluates the whole trip, while the other emphasizes ore weight.

Why a Magmasaur can outperform an Ankylosaurus in practice

It reaches more of the route without a carrier

Metal deposits are often separated by cliffs, heat, hostile creatures or awkward terrain. A mobile Magmasaur can travel from one cluster to another under its own power instead of depending on a separate hauling creature for every reposition. That matters when a node run is limited by travel time rather than by the number of swings at each deposit.

It is built for volcanic conditions

Magmasaur’s lava and fire immunity removes hazards that would otherwise force a rider to stop, dismount or detour. The rider is protected while mounted, so the mount can remain the working platform in places where a conventional metal carrier would expose the survivor. This does not make every volcanic route safe: hostile creatures, falls, encumbrance and server-specific damage settings still matter. It does make heat and lava themselves a much smaller part of the risk calculation.

Its apex status changes predator pressure

The official description highlights the Magmasaur’s “apex” status: most non-apex predators ignore it while it gathers metal. Fewer interruptions mean fewer forced fights and less time spent protecting a fragile gathering mount. “Most” is important. Apex threats and map-specific dangers are not removed, so scout the route and keep an escape plan.

It combines hauling and processing

A Magmasaur is not only a gathering mount. It can also operate in melting mode, allowing a player to process metal during or after the run. That combination can reduce the number of trips between a remote deposit and the base’s forges when the server’s settings and the creature’s food supply make the extra consumption worthwhile.

When Ankylosaurus is the better choice

You have reliable lifting and transport

If your base can move an Ankylosaurus to the mining area and bring it back without much delay, its higher reduction can outweigh the Magmasaur’s mobility advantage. In that setup, the Ankylosaurus spends less of its inventory capacity on the same quantity of ore, leaving more room before encumbrance limits the harvest.

The route is short, safe and node-dense

On a compact route with little predator pressure and no volcanic hazards, Magmasaur’s immunity and mounted protection provide less additional value. A stationary or carefully positioned Ankylosaurus can focus on the nodes, and the higher reduction becomes the deciding benefit.

You need raw metal rather than immediate ingots

Melting is optional, not a requirement for gathering. If your industrial setup already has ample refining capacity, you may prefer to bring back raw metal and process it under controlled conditions at the base. That avoids spending the Magmasaur’s food reserve during the trip and lets you decide when to refine.

How to plan a Magmasaur metal run

  1. Define the objective. Decide whether the trip is for maximum raw metal, a dangerous volcanic route, or a combined gather-and-smelt run. The objective determines whether mobility or inventory reduction deserves priority.
  2. Inspect the route. Identify the node clusters, narrow passages, lava exposure, likely predator encounters and the safest return path. A Magmasaur is strong in volcanic terrain, but it still needs a route that can accommodate its movement and turning space.
  3. Choose the processing mode. Gather in the normal mode when food is limited or you want raw ore. Use melting mode only when the trip benefits from refining on the way and you can support its higher food consumption.
  4. Set a carrying limit before harvesting. Leave room for the metal you expect to collect and for movement during the return. A mount that can technically hold more is not useful if it becomes too slow to retreat from danger.
  5. Work the route in clusters. Clear or avoid threats, harvest the nearest practical group, then reposition. The Magmasaur’s mobility is most valuable when it keeps the mount moving between deposits instead of making repeated long detours.
  6. Check inventory and food periodically. Melting mode increases food consumption substantially. If the food reserve is falling faster than expected, stop processing and return with raw metal rather than risking a stranded mount.
  7. Return by the planned path. Do not assume the outbound route is still safe after encumbrance or a changed predator position. A shorter, familiar path is usually preferable to an unexplored shortcut.
  8. Unload and reset. Transfer metal or ingots, replenish food and decide whether the next run should remain in melting mode. Keeping the gathering and refining decisions separate prevents one depleted food reserve from ruining the next trip.

Using melting mode: what you gain and what it costs

In melting mode, two units of metal produce one Metal Ingot. This is useful when your mining area is far from the base or when you want the Magmasaur to serve as both carrier and mobile furnace. The conversion reduces the raw-ore stack while preserving the material as ingots for crafting and construction.

The trade-off is food. The ARK Official Community Wiki notes that food consumption rises substantially while the Magmasaur is smelting. That makes melting mode a situational tool rather than a permanent setting. It is most attractive when travel distance is the bottleneck and you can carry enough food to finish the route. It is less attractive when food is scarce, the trip is short, or your base already has convenient refining capacity.

Server configuration also matters. Rates that change harvest amounts, spoilage, creature consumption or processing speed can shift the point at which smelting pays off. Treat the two-to-one conversion as the fixed recipe described by the official wiki, then evaluate the time and food costs under your own settings.

Transport and base logistics

A major Magmasaur limitation is that it cannot be picked up by an Argentavis or a Karkinos. If your metal operation depends on lifting a creature into a remote mining pocket and dropping it beside the nodes, that restriction can make an Ankylosaurus easier to deploy.

Plan the Magmasaur’s route from the base before you breed or assign it as your primary gatherer. Verify that the ground path has enough clearance, that the return route remains usable when the mount is carrying metal, and that your unloading point does not require a pickup. Bases with a direct ground connection to volcanic terrain gain more from Magmasaur than bases whose entire logistics chain depends on aerial or claw transport.

The restriction does not make Magmasaur a poor gatherer; it changes the support infrastructure it needs. A self-powered route can turn its mobility into a strength, while a carrier-dependent operation turns the same creature into an awkward fit.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Choosing by star rating alone

Both creatures show five-star metal efficiency, so the rating does not answer the transport or inventory question. Compare the route, the reduction and the time required to position each mount.

Assuming the lower reduction makes Magmasaur inferior

The Magmasaur’s 75% reduction is lower than the Ankylosaurus’s 85%, but a faster, safer route can still deliver more metal per hour. Measure the complete trip: travel, harvesting, danger and unloading.

Leaving melting mode active without a food plan

Because food use rises substantially during smelting, an otherwise successful run can fail on the return journey. Start with a deliberate food reserve and monitor it; switch back to gathering mode if the reserve falls too quickly.

Planning a pickup that cannot happen

Neither an Argentavis nor a Karkinos can pick up a Magmasaur. Confirm that the creature can walk to the mining area before committing to the route.

Treating apex status as total immunity

Most non-apex predators ignoring the Magmasaur reduces interruptions, but it does not remove every threat. Watch for apex enemies, falls and terrain traps, and keep a retreat path open.

Which mount should you use?

Your situation Recommended mount Reason
Volcanic or lava-heavy route Magmasaur Immunity and mounted rider protection reduce environmental risk.
Nodes spread across difficult terrain Magmasaur Mobility can save more time than the extra inventory reduction.
Safe, compact route with dependable transport Ankylosaurus The 85% reduction favors maximum raw-metal capacity.
Remote run where refining on the way is valuable Magmasaur It can smelt while operating as the gathering mount.
Operation built around Argentavis or Karkinos pickup Ankylosaurus Magmasaur cannot use either pickup method.
Food-constrained server or trip Ankylosaurus for raw ore, or Magmasaur without melting mode Smelting substantially increases Magmasaur food consumption.

Bottom line: are Magmasaurs good at getting metal?

Magmasaurs are among the best practical metal mounts in ARK. Their five-star gathering tier, mobility, volcanic safety, mounted rider protection and ability to smelt make them ideal for hazardous or widely spread routes. They are not automatically the most efficient choice for every base: Ankylosaurus has the stronger listed metal reduction and is the better specialist when transport is easy and the goal is raw ore capacity. Choose the Magmasaur for route performance and flexibility; choose the Ankylosaurus for maximum weight efficiency in a well-supported mining operation.
