“The program can’t start because mahjong.dll is missing from your computer.”
If mahjong.dll is missing, the file most commonly belongs to the older Mahjong Titans game, not to a general Windows runtime. The safest repair is to restore the complete game installation rather than download an isolated DLL.

Which fix applies to you
- You have Windows Vista or a supported Windows 7 edition: Re-enable the Games feature, then restore Mahjong Titans from matching installation media or a trusted backup if its files are absent.
- The error appeared suddenly after antivirus activity: Check Windows Security Protection history before reinstalling anything.
- You copied Mahjong Titans from another computer: Remove the copied or incomplete installation and restore a matching, complete game folder.
- You use Windows 10 or Windows 11: The old game was not normally included with these versions. Install Microsoft Mahjong from Microsoft Store instead.
- The file exists but the error says “The specified module could not be found”: A dependency may be missing. Do not assume
mahjong.dllitself is damaged. - Several built-in Windows features are failing: Run DISM and SFC after checking the game installation.
- The file disappears again after restoration: Investigate antivirus detection, malware, disk errors, or a damaged installation.
What mahjong.dll is
mahjong.dll is an application DLL associated with Mahjong Titans, the mahjong solitaire game bundled with Windows Vista and selected Windows 7 editions. Microsoft documentation and support discussions identify Mahjong Titans as a bundled Windows game, while Windows 7 Starter and Home Basic did not include it.
Public product metadata commonly identifies the file as part of “MahjongTitans Resources.” A commonly listed build is 32-bit version 1.0.0.1, approximately 13.08 MB, but this metadata is not an authoritative Microsoft download manifest.

This is an application file, not a normal Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, graphics-driver, or general Windows system DLL. It should normally sit beside the game’s executable and resource files, not in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Fix 1: Identify the game and inspect its folder
Before replacing anything, establish which program is producing the error.
- Read the title bar or application name in the error dialog.
- Check whether the shortcut points to
Mahjong.exe. - Right-click the shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target and Start in.
- Look for the historical folder:

- Confirm whether the folder contains
Mahjong.exe,mahjong.dll, and the game’s other resource files.
If the folder does not exist, Mahjong Titans is probably not installed. If the folder exists but contains only a few files, the installation is incomplete. Copying a single DLL will not recreate the executable, resources, shortcuts, or matching dependencies.
Also check whether the program is a third-party Mahjong game with a similar name. A third-party application may use a file with the same filename but require a different build. Its official installer is the correct source.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
A missing DLL can result from antivirus quarantine, especially if the game worked until a scan or cleanup operation.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections for
mahjong.dllor the Mahjong game folder. - Expand a detection to see its path and details.
Only restore the file if the path clearly belongs to the genuine Mahjong Titans installation and you are confident the installation is legitimate. Microsoft warns that selecting Allow on device can put the device at risk.
If the detection is uncertain, leave the file quarantined. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan, and consider an offline scan if you suspect tampering. Then reinstall the complete game from matching Windows media or restore it from a clean backup.

Fix 3: Re-enable the historical Windows Games feature
On a compatible Windows installation, Mahjong Titans may have been disabled rather than fully removed.

- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Expand or locate Games.
- Select Games, if it is available and appropriate for the Windows edition.
- Select OK and allow Windows to apply the change.
- Restart the computer.
- Open the Start menu and search for Mahjong Titans.
If the Games entry is unavailable, the Windows edition may not include the feature, or the operating system may be too new to provide the old game. Windows 7 Starter and Home Basic did not include Mahjong Titans, and Windows 10 and Windows 11 should not be expected to supply it.
If enabling the feature does not restore Mahjong.exe and mahjong.dll, use matching Windows installation media or an original system backup. Do not mix files from Vista, Windows 7, and an unofficial repack.

Fix 4: Restore the complete game installation
The most reliable repair for a missing or damaged application DLL is to restore the whole application.
For the historical game:
- Confirm the Windows edition and original game source.
- Obtain matching Windows installation media or a trusted backup from that same installation.
- Restore or reinstall the Mahjong Titans feature using the media’s supported setup process.
- Check the installation folder for the complete set of game files.
- Start the game from its original shortcut.
- If Windows Security detects the file again, stop and investigate the detection instead of forcing the launch.
The expected application-local location is:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesMahjong
Do not copy mahjong.dll to System32, SysWOW64, the Windows directory, or a random folder on the system path. The game expects its matching application files together.
For Windows 10 and Windows 11, use Microsoft Mahjong instead. If it is already installed but will not start:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the Mahjong application.
- Select its More menu.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
- If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and select Reset.
- If necessary, uninstall it and reinstall it through Microsoft Store.
Microsoft Mahjong is a newer Store application, not a renamed copy of Mahjong Titans. It should not be expected to use the old mahjong.dll.

DISM and SFC are useful when Windows component corruption is affecting multiple built-in features. They are not guaranteed to restore an application file that was deleted from the Mahjong folder.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish successfully.
- Then run:
text
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and try the game again.
Success means DISM completes without an error and SFC reports that it repaired corrupted files or found no integrity violations. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, review the result, restart, and repeat the repair only if Windows itself is showing other component failures. If mahjong.dll is still absent, return to the complete-game restoration steps.

A loader error does not always mean the named DLL is missing. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that a dependency required by mahjong.dll is unavailable. “Not designed to run on Windows” can indicate a damaged file or an incompatible build.
Check the following:
mahjong.dllmust match the original Mahjong Titans build.- Do not choose a 32-bit or 64-bit file based only on a download site’s label.
- A 32-bit application generally requires its matching 32-bit application DLL.
- Do not install both arbitrary 32-bit and 64-bit copies.
- Restore the file and its surrounding resources together from the same source.
- Confirm that the game is not an unofficial port or copied folder.
If the error began after a graphics or system change, update the relevant hardware driver only through Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer’s official support channel. For Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
A driver update will not normally recreate Mahjong Titans files, and Device Manager is not a substitute for reinstalling the game.

If the problem began after Windows Update, disk cleanup, a driver installation, or another software change, System Restore may return the game and related settings to an earlier working state.
- Press Win+R.
- Enter:

- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally preserves personal files, but it can remove programs, drivers, and updates installed after the restore point. If no suitable restore point exists, restore the game from matching media or use Windows recovery options after backing up important data.
Should you run regsvr32?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, typically for COM components. A game DLL such as mahjong.dll normally does not need COM registration.
Running commands such as these will not repair a missing Mahjong installation:
regsvr32 mahjong.dll
You may receive an “entry point not found” message, or the command may appear to complete without making the game usable. Do not register the file unless documentation from the original application specifically requires it.
Should you download mahjong.dll separately?
Avoid random DLL download sites. An arbitrary replacement may contain malware, belong to the wrong game, use the wrong architecture, or be incompatible with the executable and resource files beside it. It may also conceal the actual cause, such as quarantine, an incomplete installation, or a missing dependency.

There is no verified current Microsoft download page that distributes mahjong.dll as a standalone file. Use one of these safer sources instead:
- Matching Windows installation media for the original Mahjong Titans feature
- A clean, trusted backup of the complete game installation
- Microsoft Mahjong from Microsoft Store on current Windows
- The official installer for a clearly identified third-party Mahjong game

Is mahjong.dll part of Windows?
