On October 1, 2026, Maine Wire reporter Joe Sokol was reporting outside Bangor Comprehensive Treatment Center in Bangor when a driver confronted him about filming. A vehicle later crossed the grass toward Sokol and appeared to hit his camera equipment; he was not injured. Bangor police investigated and arrested Ryan Hayward the next day on four reported charges. The arrest does not establish guilt, and the available reports do not establish a court finding about intent or the case’s final outcome.
What happened outside the treatment center?
Bangor Daily News reported that the incident occurred shortly before 8 a.m. on October 1 on Odlin Road. Sokol was outside Bangor Comprehensive Treatment Center, working on a report for The Maine Wire.
According to the video account described by both Bangor Daily News and The Maine Wire, a driver stopped beside Sokol and challenged him about filming. The vehicle later drove across the grass toward him. Bangor Daily News said the video appeared to show the car nearly hitting Sokol and apparently striking camera equipment. Sokol was not injured.
The Maine Wire characterized the incident as an attempted murder. That is the outlet’s description, not a court finding that the driver intended to kill Sokol. The video descriptions and reporting establish a reported confrontation and vehicle approach, but do not by themselves settle intent.

What did police do?
Bangor police investigated. In its initial report, Bangor Daily News quoted department spokesperson Katy England as saying police had “no details to release.” The paper reported the following day, October 2, that police had arrested Ryan Hayward, 38, of Bangor.
The charges reported by Bangor Daily News were:
- Reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon
- Criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon
- Driving to endanger
- Violating conditions of release
These are reported charges, not findings of guilt. The coverage available through October 3 does not establish a later court disposition.

What has been said about the driver’s motive?
In a follow-up, The Maine Wire described a reported phone interview with Hayward. The outlet said he denied trying to murder Sokol and acknowledged being angered by the reporter’s coverage. Mediaite also summarized the outlet’s account of that call. Those remarks are attributed statements, not independent proof of what motivated the driving.
Do not treat intoxication as established. The Maine Wire account said Sokol speculated about possible intoxication; the reported phone call disputed that characterization. The available reporting does not establish intoxication as a fact.

Why are people describing the incident differently?
The Nerd Stash article that prompted the “What was the whole story?” framing described differing reactions from viewers, including people who thought the video showed an intentional attempt to hit Sokol and people asking why a clinic employee became upset. Those are examples reported by that article, not a survey of public opinion.
The accounts also have different evidentiary positions. The Maine Wire published the video and its reporter was involved, while Bangor Daily News independently reported the incident and arrest. The local paper’s reporting corroborates key events, but the available coverage still does not establish a judicial finding about intent. The Maine Wire’s characterization, the reported video description, police charges, and a court’s eventual findings are distinct kinds of claims.
