Mainframe Industries announced a funding round on March 19, 2020, to develop an unannounced cloud-native MMO. GamesBeat reported the round at $8.3 million, led by Andreessen Horowitz, while TechCrunch described it as a $8.1 million (€7.6 million) Series A. Both outlets listed Riot Games and four existing investors among the participants.
How much Mainframe raised—and why reports differ
The reported total depends on the outlet: GamesBeat put the March 2020 round at $8.3 million; TechCrunch reported $8.1 million (€7.6 million) and identified it as a Series A. These are contemporaneous reports of the same round, not amounts to combine. GamesBeat’s March 19, 2020 report and TechCrunch’s March 19, 2020 report give their respective figures.
Who invested
Andreessen Horowitz led the round. GamesBeat and TechCrunch also named Riot Games, Maki.vc, Play Ventures, Sisu Game Ventures, and Crowberry Capital as participants. The latter four were existing investors, according to GamesBeat.
What the money was meant to fund
Mainframe was developing an unannounced MMO in pre-production. GamesBeat described the project as an open-world sandbox intended to create a persistent online world accessible from different screens. TechCrunch reported that the funding would help the studio reach a closed alpha; at the time, the game had no launch timeline and was not expected to release in 2020.

The studio was described as Finnish-Icelandic, founded by veterans of CCP, Remedy Entertainment, and Next Games, with development taking place in Helsinki and Reykjavik. These details and the schedule refer to the project as reported in March 2020, not its present status.
What “cloud-native” meant in Mainframe’s pitch
In a cloud game, computation happens in internet-connected data centers and the resulting video is streamed to the player’s screen. GamesBeat explained that this approach could make a high-end game accessible on devices ranging from low-end laptops to gaming PCs, mobile devices, and TVs.

Mainframe’s ambition was not simply to stream a conventional game. CEO Thor Gunnarsson described building a runtime targeted at the cloud, with the potential to support larger player populations and more storage. Those were the company’s design rationale and goals—not independently verified performance results. Gunnarsson said, “There are so many different aspects of being cloud-native that we can benefit from,” including player population and simultaneous player counts.
That ambition shaped the studio’s cross-platform framing. “We are starting from the ground up with no legacy to constrain us, across mobile, PC or console,” Gunnarsson told GamesBeat in 2020. “All platforms are equally strong.”

How the vision developed by 2021
In 2021 follow-up coverage, Mainframe’s MMO was still unnamed, with play planned across mobile, PC, and console. GamesBeat reported the studio’s interest in Unreal Engine 5 and spectator participation. Andreessen Horowitz’s investment announcement described possible cloud-native interactions such as spectators affecting play, real-time content generation, and personalized onboarding through URLs. Those examples represented the investor’s thesis about what cloud-native games might enable, rather than confirmed features in a released game.
Andreessen Horowitz announced in November 2021 that it was leading Mainframe’s Series B, with general partner Jonathan Lai joining the board. Coverage again differed slightly on the amount: GamesBeat reported $22.9 million, while Game Developer reported €20.3 million ($23 million) and named Kevin Lin and Riccardo Zacconi as co-investors.
