1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose Switch if you want the original Nintendo 64 game and already have Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack access; choose 3DS if you want the separate remaster and its updated visuals and interface features. The Switch release is not Majora’s Mask 3D. Both versions tell the familiar story of Link and Termina’s repeating three-day cycle, but they differ in edition, hardware, and access route.
Is Majora’s Mask on Switch the 3DS version?
No. The Switch catalog offers the Nintendo 64 release of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, originally released in 2000. Nintendo announced its availability through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack on 25 February 2022. Nintendo’s announcement identifies it as the N64 game, not the 3DS remaster.
The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D is a separate remaster for Nintendo 3DS-family systems. Nintendo UK lists its release date as 13 February 2015 and describes refreshed visuals and additional features. Nintendo’s 3DS product page says it can be played on 3DS-family hardware, including Nintendo 2DS; the stereoscopic 3D display effect is only available on 3D-capable 3DS models.
What is different about Majora’s Mask 3D?
Nintendo documents several presentation and interface changes for the remaster. They do not change the basic premise: Link uses the Ocarina of Time to travel through Termina’s repeating three-day cycle, learning residents’ routines and deciding what to do before time is rewound.
#1 Best Overall

- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
- Refreshed visuals: Nintendo describes the graphics as overhauled.
- Touch-screen information and item management: The lower screen makes it easier to switch items and view schedules and map information.
- Camera controls: Players can look around with motion controls. Nintendo also lists Circle Pad Pro support on the original Nintendo 3DS and C Stick camera control on New Nintendo 3DS.
- Bombers’ Notebook alarms: The upgraded Notebook tracks activities and can alert players to events.
- Hints and an added activity: Sheikah Stones offer hints, and fishing holes are included.
Nintendo describes the remaster as remaining true to the original, but the official pages cited here do not establish a full mechanical comparison of boss fights, transformation movement, or time mechanics. The documented distinction to weigh is the remaster’s visuals and interface features, rather than an assumed difference in the story.
What do you need to play each version?
| Version | Hardware and access | How to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo 64 release on Switch | Nintendo Switch, a Nintendo Account, and Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership are required for the Nintendo 64 collection. Internet access is required for online features, and availability varies by country, according to Nintendo’s announcement. | Access it through the subscription catalog; it is not a standalone Switch game card in the cited source. Check the current service details and catalog for your country. |
| Majora’s Mask 3D | A Nintendo 3DS-family system is required. Nintendo says the game is playable on Nintendo 2DS as well; stereoscopic 3D is limited to 3D-capable 3DS models. | Nintendo lists a 3DS game-card edition. Nintendo UK says purchases in the Nintendo 3DS-family eShop ended on 27 March 2023; current physical stock is not established by that notice. Check the region, condition, and compatibility of any listing. |
Nintendo says Expansion Pack membership is sold separately. As local catalog availability and service terms can change, confirm the current Nintendo service page for your country before choosing the Switch route. For the 3DS remaster, the eShop closure means a new digital purchase is no longer an option through that store; a physical copy is the documented format to look for.

Which version should you play?
Choose Switch for the original N64 release
Pick Switch if you already have compatible Switch hardware and Expansion Pack access, and specifically want to play the Nintendo 64 edition. This is also the direct option if you want the original release rather than the 3DS remaster’s documented visual and interface updates.
Choose 3DS for the remaster and its touch-screen features
Pick Majora’s Mask 3D if you have compatible 3DS-family hardware and value its refreshed visuals, touch-screen item and information access, Notebook alarms, hints, and fishing holes. It is also the choice if you want a physical 3DS game card, subject to finding a suitable copy.

If you have neither platform
Compare the cost and availability of the required access route where you live: Switch requires the relevant subscription, while the 3DS version requires compatible hardware and a copy of the game. The cited official sources establish those requirements, but not current subscription prices or physical-copy prices and stock. Neither source establishes one edition as objectively superior.
