Yes. Steelix has male and female forms, and the documented visual distinction is a tiny feature at the sides of its mouth: the male form shows one outer tooth on each side, while the female form does not. Because the feature is small, you usually need a close view of the sprite or model rather than a quick glance at the whole Pokémon.
What the games establish about Steelix’s gender
Steelix is not genderless. The official Pokémon Pokédex identifies Steelix as Pokédex No. 0208 and displays both male and female gender symbols for the species. That establishes that a Steelix can be male or female, but the official entry does not explain how to distinguish the two visually.

The visual explanation comes from references that show the forms directly. GO Center documents the distinction for Pokémon GO, while Serebii’s Generation VIII Pokédex page includes a Gender Differences section with separate male and female Steelix sprites. Those references support a visual identification method, not a claim that every Pokémon game uses exactly the same artwork or model.

Male Steelix
In the Pokémon GO description, the male form has an outer tooth on each side of its mouth. These are the small teeth at the outer edges, not the more central parts of the mouth. Look toward the left and right corners of the mouth when the face is visible.
Female Steelix
The female form lacks those two outer teeth. The absence is easier to notice when you compare a female sprite directly with a male sprite than when you inspect one Steelix in isolation.
Why the distinction is easy to miss
The difference changes only a small area of the face. A distant battle view, a dark background, an animation frame, or a three-quarter angle can hide one side of the mouth. Low-resolution screenshots can also merge the tooth with the outline of Steelix’s jaws. Treat the feature as a close-inspection clue, not a detail that should be obvious in every scene.

How to check a Steelix in Pokémon GO
GO Center’s description is specifically framed around Pokémon GO, so this is the clearest context for applying the tooth comparison. The following method avoids relying on a thumbnail or a moving battle animation.
- Open the individual Steelix. Use the game’s Pokémon detail view for the specimen you want to identify, rather than the small entry icon in a list.
- Choose the clearest available view. Wait for a frame in which the head faces you. If the interface allows you to enlarge the model, use that option; otherwise, use the largest static view available.
- Inspect both mouth edges. Check the left and right outer corners separately. Do not decide from one side alone, because an angle or an animation pose can obscure one edge.
- Compare with a known example when possible. A side-by-side reference is more reliable than memory. The question is whether the two outer teeth are present, not whether the entire head shape looks different.
- Record the result from the gender symbol as well. The gender icon in the game’s information panel is the direct label for that individual. The mouth detail is useful for visual confirmation, especially when you are comparing sprites or screenshots.
If the mouth is too small to resolve, do not force a conclusion. Capture or view the model at a larger size, or use the recorded gender symbol instead of guessing from a blurred image.

Using sprites to compare forms in other games
For games outside Pokémon GO, inspect the specific title’s artwork rather than assuming that every generation renders Steelix identically. Serebii’s Generation VIII Pokédex page presents separate male and female sprites and labels a Gender Differences section, making it a useful example of how the distinction is represented in that generation.
- Find the title’s own Steelix sprite or model. Use the game’s Pokédex, party screen, storage view, or another screen that shows the Pokémon at a stable size.
- Verify that the page or game labels sex. A pair of images is useful only when you know which one is the male form and which one is the female form.
- Compare the mouth at the same scale. Matching scale and pose prevents shadows, perspective, and compression from being mistaken for a gender feature.
- Limit the conclusion to that game’s art. If a title uses a different sprite set, 3D model, camera angle, or animation, describe what its own images show instead of extending a Pokémon GO observation automatically.
The consulted references do not establish that the mouth rendering is unchanged in every Pokémon release. A comparison from one game can demonstrate how that game depicts the forms, but it is not evidence for every version, remake, spin-off, or future update.

Common identification mistakes
Looking only at the body
Steelix’s long segmented body is visually dominant, but the documented sex difference is on the face. Body length, segment arrangement, and overall silhouette are not the comparison described by the cited references. Move your attention to the mouth before judging.

Checking one side and stopping
A three-quarter view can hide one corner of the mouth. Inspect both sides in a front-facing frame, or use a second frame before making a visual call.

Confusing a rendering artifact with a tooth
Pixel edges, highlights, shadows, and compression can create a bright mark near the jaw. A genuine comparison should use a clearly labeled male or female reference at the same scale and, ideally, more than one frame.
Assuming the appearance proves every gameplay rule
The sources establish a sex designation and a visual distinction. They do not establish that the mouth feature changes Steelix’s moves, statistics, evolution requirements, availability, or other mechanics. Use the gender symbol or the game’s own documentation for mechanics; use the sprite comparison for appearance.
Treating an unclear image as proof
When neither side of the mouth is readable, the correct conclusion is that the image is inconclusive. A cropped, enlarged screenshot can help, but enlargement cannot recover detail that was never captured.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA practical decision checklist
- Confirm that you are looking at Steelix, Pokédex No. 0208, rather than another serpentine Pokémon.
- Use the individual Pokémon’s information view when the game provides a gender symbol.
- For visual identification, select the largest front-facing sprite or model available.
- Inspect the two outer edges of the mouth, not just the center of the face.
- Compare against a labeled male and female reference from the same game or generation when possible.
- If the title’s artwork differs or the image is too small, report the result as uncertain rather than generalizing from another release.
What to remember
Steelix does have a gender difference. The documented clue is subtle but specific: male Steelix shows an outer tooth on each side of the mouth, whereas female Steelix does not. Pokémon GO references describe that feature directly, and Generation VIII sprite documentation provides separate male and female examples. For any other game, verify the title’s own sprite or model before assuming that its rendering matches those references.
