Manchester City says it lodged an appeal at 7pm on 1 October 2026 against the Premier League Commission’s opinion in its financial-rules case. The club argues the opinion is materially flawed; the appeal has not yet been decided, and no sanction had been announced in the reporting available on 2 October.
What did Manchester City appeal?
City appealed the opinion published by the Premier League Commission on 29 September 2026. The Associated Press reported that the commission found the club guilty of serious financial-rule breaches relating to 2009–18. The appeal is a challenge to that commission opinion; it is not itself a decision overturning the findings.
In its 2 October statement, Manchester City said its position was that the opinion contained “clear material errors, of law, principle and fact” and was unsafe. Those are the club’s arguments, not an independent determination that the commission erred. City also restated its innocence and said it would limit further comment while proceedings continue. What happens next in the appeal?
The Associated Press reported that the Premier League said the appeal hearing would remain private and confidential until publication of its outcome is permitted. It reported that league rules expect a hearing within 12 weeks of filing, limit it to five consecutive days, and allow the appeal board to allow the appeal, dismiss it, or make another order it considers fit. These are procedural details reported by the AP; the current rulebook was not independently reviewed. Associated Press account of the case and process

No sanction had been announced in the reporting available on 2 October 2026. The appeal outcome and any penalty are separate questions: the appeal board must first address the challenge, while a sanction has not yet been reported as imposed.

The AP described possible penalties as a reprimand, fine, points deduction, or expulsion from the Premier League. These are possible outcomes, not a prediction or a decision in City’s case. The commission findings, the club’s appeal arguments, and any eventual sanction should not be treated as interchangeable stages. Associated Press report on possible sanctions
