The 30-minute Gamescom demo of Persona 4 Revival offered a first look at refreshed presentation and combat changes, but not enough to judge the finished remake. CGMagazine’s Eduard Gafton came away impressed by the visuals, less convinced by the new English voice cast, and uncertain whether the more powerful combat options will preserve the challenge.
What was in the Gamescom demo?
In his CGMagazine hands-on preview, Eduard Gafton describes a 30-minute demo split between a story sequence featuring the protagonist’s first Persona awakening and a combat-focused segment in the first dungeon. That is a narrow sample of the game, not a review of its full story, dungeon variety, or final systems.
How does Persona 4 Revival look and sound?
Refreshed character presentation
Gafton says character portraits, character models, and animated cutscenes had received considerable attention. His reaction was positive: “from the get-go, I was impressed by the visuals on show in Persona 4 Revival.” That is the preview author’s impression of the demo, not a claim from the developer.
The new English voices are an adjustment
Gafton was not yet sold on the all-new English voice cast. He also acknowledges that familiarity with the older performances could be shaping that response, so his reaction should be read as a personal first impression rather than a verdict on the cast or its performance across the full game.

What changes did the demo show in dungeon exploration?
Gafton noticed a visual indicator pointing toward the fastest route forward. He hopes players will be able to turn it off, but his account does not confirm that a toggle exists.
The demo also let the player guard against Shadow attacks while exploring the dungeon. Gafton says this reduces the clunkiness of triggering encounters regardless of whether the player or the Shadow has the advantage. The short session does not establish how this change affects dungeon pacing overall.

How does combat work in the Gamescom preview?
Gafton reports familiar combat features associated with Persona 5, including Baton Pass, which lets a character pass a turn to another party member, and All-Out Attacks after exploiting every enemy’s weakness. The demo also introduced two more distinctive mechanics:
- Prime Time: Gafton says a battle gauge fills through Baton Passes or standard and Persona attacks. Once triggered, party members can act consecutively without ending the turn or spending resources.
- Series Finale: The preview describes this as a finisher capable of defeating a group of Shadows.
These are mechanics as described in one short demo. Gafton worries that chaining actions could make fights too easy, partly by comparison with his assessment of Persona 3 Reload, but that is a prediction—not a tested finding about Revival’s full-game difficulty or final balance.

How does the Gamescom preview compare with the TGS account?
A separate RPGFan preview by Matt Wardell describes a 20-minute story demo at Tokyo Game Show, not the Gamescom session. Wardell praised expressive 3D models during dialogue, improved anime cutscenes, attractive menus, and music that felt familiar despite a new vocalist. He found the dungeon layouts boxy and flat even with refreshed visuals.
Those observations provide a second reporter’s perspective on an earlier, separate demo; they do not show that Gamescom included everything Wardell saw at TGS. Taken together, the two accounts point to presentation as a visible area of change while leaving the broader question of how much dungeon structure has changed open.

What does the preview establish—and what remains unknown?
- Established by these hands-on accounts: Gafton’s Gamescom session covered an awakening story sequence and first-dungeon combat; his strongest positive reaction was to the visual presentation. Wardell’s TGS session offered a separate set of impressions about models, cutscenes, menus, music, and dungeon layouts.
- Not established: the final feature set, whether the route indicator can be disabled, how combat will be balanced in the full game, or how much older story and content will be retained.
- Not confirmed by an official source here: RPGFan reports a February 18, 2027 release date and PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam platforms. Those remain secondary-source claims in the material available for this preview, not verified official details.
For players comparing the remake with Persona 4 or Persona 4 Golden, the eventual points to watch are presentation, English voice performances, dungeon navigation and layout, encounter initiation, combat options and difficulty, and retained story or content. The available demos do not support a definitive comparison yet. Gafton identifies Persona 4 Golden as an enhanced port released in 2012 and says he played it on PlayStation Vita; it is the predecessor, not another name for Persona 4 Revival.
