Mantis Blades and Stamina in Cyberpunk 2077: The Update 2.0 Rule Explained

Yes. Mantis Blades consume stamina when you attack with them. They are melee-weapon cyberware, and Cyberpunk 2077’s Update 2.0 rules state that melee attacks drain stamina. CD PROJEKT RED did not publish a Mantis-Blades-specific cost in the cited notes, so there is no official number to quote for how much one strike uses.

What the official rule says

Update 2.0 introduced a broad stamina rule based on the type of action you perform. Its official notes say: “Stamina is drained when firing ranged weapons or attacking with melee weapons.” Because Mantis Blades are melee weapon cyberware, an attack made with them falls under that rule.

In practical terms, the stamina question is about the attack itself, not about the fact that the blades are installed as cyberware. Activating or equipping the cyberware is not identified in the notes as a separate stamina event. The supported conclusion is narrower and clearer: striking an enemy with Mantis Blades is a melee attack, and melee attacks consume stamina.

How stamina is divided between movement and combat

The same Update 2.0 notes changed how several movement actions work outside combat. Sprinting, sliding and jumping no longer drain stamina when you are not in combat. That change does not make melee attacks free; the notes place attacks in a separate combat category.

Action or situation What Update 2.0 establishes How it relates to Mantis Blades
Sprinting outside combat No stamina drain under the named outside-combat rule Unrelated to the stamina cost of a blade strike
Sliding outside combat No stamina drain under the named outside-combat rule Unrelated to the stamina cost of a blade strike
Jumping outside combat No stamina drain under the named outside-combat rule Unrelated to the stamina cost of a blade strike
Mantis Blades attack Covered by the rule that melee attacks drain stamina Consumes stamina; the notes do not give a blade-specific amount
Other melee attacks Drain stamina, with cost varying by weapon Provides the category in which Mantis Blades are treated
Ranged weapon fire Drains stamina during combat Different action type, included to show the broader combat rule

The wording about movement is deliberately limited to actions performed outside combat. It does not establish a universal rule for every movement action in every combat circumstance, so it should not be used to infer an exact in-combat movement cost.

What “uses stamina” means during a blade fight

When you start a fight with Mantis Blades, each attack belongs to the melee category covered by Update 2.0. Your available stamina therefore becomes a resource to manage alongside health and any other combat systems your build uses. A series of attacks can reduce the amount available for the next action, even though the blades are a cyberware weapon rather than a conventional item carried in an inventory slot.

The rule does not say that Mantis Blades stop working at a particular stamina threshold, nor does it publish a fixed number of points per swing. It only establishes that attacks draw from stamina and that melee-weapon costs vary by weapon. Avoid treating a single observed bar movement as an official universal value unless a version-specific source documents that value.

  • Having the cyberware installed: the cited notes do not identify installation, equipping or merely carrying the blades as a stamina drain.
  • Performing an attack: this is the action explicitly covered by the melee rule and therefore consumes stamina.
  • Moving before or after the attack: the named outside-combat movement actions are covered by a different rule; that exception does not remove the cost of attacking.

Is there an official stamina number for Mantis Blades?

Not in the Update 2.0 notes cited for this question. CD PROJEKT RED says that stamina cost varies by weapon but does not list a numerical Mantis-Blades value. That means an answer such as “each hit costs X stamina” would go beyond the documented evidence unless it is tied to a separate, version-specific measurement.

The missing number matters because a cost can be expressed in several incompatible ways: per light attack, per heavy attack, per combo input, or as a percentage of a bar whose size changes with other game systems. The official statement does not specify any of those formats for Mantis Blades. Treat claims that present one exact figure as measurements for a particular build, patch or test unless an official note says otherwise.

How to check the behavior in your own game

If you want to see the rule on your installation, use a controlled comparison rather than trying to estimate a number from a chaotic fight. The following procedure is designed to answer whether an attack changes your stamina state, not to create an official cost value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Load a save with Mantis Blades installed and make sure no other action is being performed at the same time.
  2. Stand in a safe area and note the stamina indicator shown by your current HUD or interface settings.
  3. Perform the movement actions you want to compare while outside combat. The Update 2.0 notes specifically identify sprinting, sliding and jumping as actions that no longer drain stamina in that state.
  4. Enter a combat encounter and allow the stamina indicator to settle before attacking, so a previous action is not mistaken for the blade’s effect.
  5. Use one Mantis-Blades attack, then pause long enough to observe the indicator before repeating the test.
  6. Record the game version, platform, attack type and any relevant build changes. A repeated observation is meaningful only when those conditions stay the same.

This test can help you understand your current setup, but it does not replace an official cost table. A visible change may be difficult to isolate if another combat action, status effect or interface update occurs at the same time.

Why patch version and platform matter

The documented rule comes from Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.0. CD PROJEKT RED announced that update on September 21, 2023, for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That date and platform list identify the release context for the quotation; they do not prove that every later patch retained identical stamina behavior.

If your game behaves differently from the Update 2.0 description, first check the version shown by your launcher or console. A later balance change, a hotfix, a platform-specific difference, a mod or a temporary interface problem could explain a discrepancy. The available official material establishes the Update 2.0 rule, but it does not provide a complete audit of all subsequent patches.

Common misunderstandings about Mantis-Blades stamina

“They are cyberware, so they should not use stamina.”

Cyberware is the delivery system, not an exemption from the melee category. The relevant classification in the notes is the action being performed: attacking with a melee weapon. Mantis Blades therefore use the same general stamina principle as other melee attacks.

“Sprinting is free, so blade attacks must be free too.”

The outside-combat movement change and the combat-attack rule address different actions. Free sprinting, sliding or jumping outside combat does not cancel the separate statement that melee attacks drain stamina.

“A percentage shown online is the official cost.”

The cited official notes contain no Mantis-Blades-specific percentage or point value. A number may describe someone’s test on a particular patch, attack animation or character configuration, but it should not be presented as the value established by Update 2.0 itself.

“The rule proves every later version works exactly the same way.”

It does not. Update 2.0 supplies a dated baseline. Without a later official note confirming the mechanic, the safest wording is that the documented Update 2.0 behavior makes Mantis-Blades attacks stamina-consuming.

What this means for combat planning

Players who rely on repeated blade attacks should treat stamina as a combat budget rather than assuming the resource is reserved only for movement. The practical decision is not whether the blades can be used at all when stamina is low—the cited notes do not define such a lockout—but how much stamina you want available when you commit to a melee sequence.

That distinction helps when comparing a quiet approach with a prolonged fight. Outside combat, the named movement actions no longer tax stamina under Update 2. Once an encounter begins, however, attacking with Mantis Blades belongs to the drain category. Planning around that transition is more reliable than using the old assumption that stamina is primarily a traversal resource.

Because no official blade-specific cost is given, avoid building a spreadsheet or rotation around an unverified number. Use your own version and attack pattern for practical timing, and label any result with the patch and platform on which you observed it.

A concise answer for different versions of the question

  • Do Mantis Blades drain stamina? Yes, their attacks are melee attacks covered by Update 2.0’s stamina rule.
  • Do they drain stamina just by being equipped? The cited notes do not say that installation or equipping alone drains stamina.
  • How much stamina does one attack use? The official Update 2.0 notes do not provide a Mantis-Blades-specific number; they only say weapon costs vary.
  • Does the outside-combat sprint change make blade attacks free? No. It applies to the named movement actions outside combat, while melee attacks remain in the stamina-draining category.
  • Is this guaranteed for every later patch? The evidence establishes the Update 2.0 behavior, not every subsequent version.

Bottom line

Mantis Blades do use stamina when you attack with them. The authoritative Update 2.0 wording places them under melee attacks, while removing stamina drain from sprinting, sliding and jumping outside combat. Since the notes do not state a blade-specific cost and later-patch behavior is not established here, use the melee rule as the reliable answer and avoid quoting an unsupported number.
