“The program can’t start because mantle32.dll is missing from your computer.”
“The code execution cannot proceed because mantle32.dll was not found.” Other programs may report that the file could not be loaded, is not designed to run on Windows, or that Mantle failed to initialize.
The 60-second answer
mantle32.dll is a 32-bit loader from AMD’s old Mantle graphics stack. It is not a Windows DLL, Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or .NET file.
The safest fix is to repair the game or application that reports the error, then select DirectX 11 instead of Mantle if that option exists. AMD discontinued active Mantle support, so installing a random copy of mantle32.dll or placing it in System32 is usually the wrong repair.

If the program genuinely requires Mantle, use the original game installer or a historically compatible AMD Radeon driver package. Do not mix files from unrelated driver versions.
What causes mantle32.dll errors
The likely cause depends on when the message appeared:
- The game installation is incomplete or its Mantle files were deleted.
- An AMD driver update or clean installation removed an old Mantle component.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- The game is forcing Mantle on hardware or a driver that cannot support it.
- A dependency of
mantle32.dllis missing even though the named file is present. - The old program is incompatible with the current graphics driver.
Public driver inventories place 32-bit Mantle components under C:WindowsSysWOW64 on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit counterpart is generally named mantle64.dll. That does not mean you should manually copy either file into those folders. The correct location depends on the driver package and the application.
A 32-bit game needs the 32-bit loader even when Windows itself is 64-bit.

This is the first repair because it restores the exact files expected by the program.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to replace missing or damaged files.
- Start the game again.
Epic Games
- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Find the game and select the three dots beside it.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Launch the game after verification finishes.
EA app or another launcher
Open the game’s library entry, select its management menu, and choose Repair, Verify, or the equivalent option. The wording varies by launcher.
If verification reports damaged files, launch the game again. If the error returns, uninstall the game, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the original launcher or installation media. Do not preserve old graphics DLLs from the previous installation unless the game’s own installer puts them back.
How to tell it worked: the program reaches its main menu or opens normally without the mantle32.dll message.

Fix 2: Switch the game to DirectX 11
Mantle is obsolete. DirectX 11 is the preferred fallback for older games that offer both renderers.
Look in the game’s Options, Video, Graphics, or Advanced graphics menu for a setting named:
- Renderer
- Graphics API
- DirectX version
- Mantle
- DirectX 11
Select DirectX 11, apply the change, and restart the game.
If the game will not open far enough to change the setting, use its configuration file or launcher option. Back up the configuration folder first. For Battlefield 4, community troubleshooting commonly refers to the GstRender.MantleEnabled setting. Changing that game-specific value from 1 to 0 can disable Mantle, but it is not a universal Windows repair.
If you cannot find the setting, reinstalling or verifying the game may recreate a usable configuration. You can also temporarily rename the game’s settings folder so the program creates fresh settings on its next launch. The exact folder name varies by game.
How to tell it worked: the game starts using DirectX 11, even if Mantle remains unavailable.
Fix 3: Check AMD driver compatibility
Mantle was designed for older AMD Radeon hardware and driver packages. AMD discontinued Mantle support beginning with Radeon Software Adrenalin 2019 Edition 19.5.1. Current AMD driver releases should not be assumed to restore the old API.
If you need Mantle specifically:
- Identify the graphics adapter:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Record the AMD Radeon model.
- Visit AMD’s official support site manually.
- Search for the exact Radeon model.
- Review the available older driver packages and release notes.
- Use only a driver package appropriate for that GPU and Windows version.
- Create a restore point before changing drivers.
- Install the driver using AMD’s installer.
- Restart Windows and test the game.
An old driver may create security, stability, and compatibility problems. Use this path only when the application truly requires Mantle and DirectX 11 or Vulkan is not available.

If Windows recently installed a driver and the failure began immediately afterward, you can inspect the previous driver:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the AMD adapter and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if the button is available.
- Restart Windows.
Do not combine mantle32.dll, mantleaxl32.dll, amdmantle32.dll, or related files from different driver generations. Matching versions matter, and mixing them can cause entry-point or initialization errors.
Manually comparing old driver packages and guessing which graphics components are stale takes time, especially after a clean Windows installation. Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove a legacy graphics DLL if it considers the file suspicious or if the game installation was modified.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry related to the game, AMD driver, or
mantle32.dll. - Check the file path and detection details.
- Restore it only if the file came from the official game or AMD installer and the location is trustworthy.
- Repair or reinstall the game or driver afterward.
Do not disable antivirus protection just to install a downloaded DLL. If the file was found in a random download folder, leave it quarantined and remove it.
Fix 5: Check whether a dependency is missing
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that mantle32.dll itself is absent. Windows may find the named file but fail to load one of its required dependencies.
First, check the application’s own installation directory and the relevant AMD driver installation. Avoid copying files between unrelated games or driver packages.
Install Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX components, or .NET only when the game separately identifies one of those components as missing. They do not supply AMD’s Mantle loader.

Fix 6: Repair damaged Windows components
Windows repair commands will not normally recreate a missing third-party AMD DLL. They are useful when other Windows files are also failing, installers crash, or the system reports broader corruption.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft documents DISM image repair and System File Checker separately because they address different types of Windows corruption.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. Do not use these DLL fixes
Do not download a standalone DLL
Random DLL download sites cannot establish that the file is authentic, compatible with your game, or the correct architecture. A downloaded file may contain malware, belong to a different driver generation, or fail because another dependency is missing.
Use the affected game’s official installer, the game launcher’s repair function, or an AMD driver package obtained through AMD’s official support channels.
Do not copy it into System32 by default
System32 is not a universal destination for every DLL. On 64-bit Windows, SysWOW64 is associated with 32-bit system-side components, but that does not make it a safe dumping ground for mantle32.dll.
If a legitimate game installer supplies the file in the game directory, leave it there. Do not replace it with a file from another computer.
Do not run regsvr32
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general repair utility for graphics loaders.
Running this command is not an appropriate fix:
regsvr32 mantle32.dll
An error from regsvr32 does not diagnose the game’s real problem. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains its intended registration use.

If the error still appears
Record these details before trying more changes:
- The executable or game that displays the message
- The exact error text
- Your AMD, NVIDIA, or Intel graphics model
- Your Windows version
- Your current graphics driver version
- The launcher used to install the program
- Whether DirectX 11 mode works
- Whether antivirus reported a quarantine event
- Whether
mantle32.dllexists in the game folder
If the computer uses NVIDIA or Intel graphics, an AMD Mantle rendering path is not available through the normal AMD driver stack. Select DirectX 11 or Vulkan instead, if the program supports it.
For an AMD system, the practical final choices are to repair the game, use its supported fallback renderer, or run the program with a historically compatible driver after considering the security and hardware risks. Do not assume that Windows repair commands or a replacement DLL can make a discontinued graphics API work on current drivers.
