If Marathon disconnects or crashes mid-run, relaunch the game and try to reconnect: Bungie says your shell remains in the world and your crew may protect it while you are away. That does not guarantee your starting gear will be returned; Bungie limits gear recovery to certain errors involving its server or network infrastructure. For lag or failed matchmaking, first identify whether the symptom points to a local connection, a queue-state issue, or a service-side problem, then use targeted checks rather than changing router settings at random.
Start by identifying what failed
“Connection problem” can describe several different events: a crash that closes the client, a disconnect that returns you to a menu, delayed responses during a live run, or a queue that starts the wrong kind of match. These symptoms do not establish the same cause, and the available Marathon guidance does not provide a universal fix or a current error-code decision tree.

Use the symptom to choose the next step. A mid-run interruption calls for a reconnect attempt first. A queue that selects the wrong mode points toward matchmaking state. Lag calls for separating delay from packet loss and comparing network conditions. Repeated failures across sessions justify looking beyond a single speed-test result and, if basic checks do not help, asking your internet provider to investigate.

If Marathon crashes or disconnects mid-run
Try the documented reconnect path
Bungie’s Marathon Dev Team says that if you crash or get disconnected, “your shell will remain in the game world and can be protected by your crew.” The shell is the in-world character you left behind; the crew may be able to protect it while you are disconnected. The practical response is to restore the connection if needed, relaunch Marathon, and attempt to reconnect to that shell. Bungie describes this as a recovery path, not a promise that every interruption can be recovered successfully. See Marathon: Networking and Security, published February 23, 2026.

- Blazing-fast WiFi 7 boosts tri-band throughput up to 12000 Mbps with 320 MHz channels of 6 GHz band, Multi-Link Operation (MLO) and 4K-QAM
- Powerful wired network capacity of up to 20G with one 2.5G WAN port and seven 2.5G LAN ports.
- High-performance quad-core 2.0GHz CPU with robust cooling, 2GB RAM and eight internal antennas providing up to 3000 sq. ft. of range.
- Smart Home Master makes it easy to set up functional subnetwork (up to 3 SSIDs) for IoT devices and VPNs
- ROG-exclusive Gaming Network streamlines Triple-Level Game Acceleration setup and connections through convenient SSIDs
- Restore your connection. If the network itself dropped, re-establish it before relaunching. Restarting the network connection is a reasonable immediate step when it is unavailable, but the Marathon article does not prescribe a specific router or console restart sequence.
- Relaunch the game. Once connected again, open Marathon and follow the in-game reconnect path if it is offered.
- Attempt to return to the shell. The shell remaining in the world is what makes the reconnect attempt possible. Your crew may protect it, but that protection is not guaranteed.
- Record what happened if the problem repeats. Note whether the client crashed, the connection dropped, or the game returned you to a menu, along with the stage of the run. This helps distinguish a recurring client failure from a network interruption when seeking support.
Do not assume gear will be refunded
Reconnecting and receiving starting gear back are separate outcomes. Bungie says it will attempt to return starting gear for a subset of errors tied to its server or network infrastructure. It explicitly excludes gameplay losses caused by a player’s internet connectivity or client-side problems. The policy is therefore conditional, not a general insurance policy for any lost run or crash. Bungie’s wording is in the same Marathon networking and security article.
A disconnect by itself does not establish which category caused the loss. If an interruption appears tied to a wider service problem, Bungie’s stated server-error policy may be relevant; if it stems from the home connection or game client, the article says those losses are not covered. Avoid treating an attempted gear return as proof that every disconnect qualifies.
If matchmaking selects the wrong queue or seems stuck
Check the known Solo Queue fix
Bungie’s Marathon Update 1.1.0.5, dated July 9, 2026, says it fixed an issue where selecting Solo Queue could fail to update matchmaking state. In that situation, a player could remain in a different queue or unexpectedly enter a crew-based queue.
This is useful context if the selected mode and resulting queue do not match, but it is a historical patch note—not evidence that the same problem is currently recurring. If the mismatch persists, verify that the game is current and look for newer Marathon patch notes or Bungie support announcements. Do not infer that a stuck queue has the same cause solely because the symptom resembles the patched issue.

Separate queue-state trouble from connection trouble
A queue that enters the wrong mode is different from a queue that takes a long time, fails to find a match, or is interrupted by a disconnect. The cited patch note addresses a Solo Queue state mismatch, not every delay or matchmaking failure. Note what the game actually does: whether it keeps searching, cancels, starts a different queue, or loses connection. That distinction makes it easier to check for a relevant update rather than applying unrelated network changes.
Understand lag, latency, and packet loss
Lag is the player-facing delay between an action and the server’s response. Bungie’s detailed explanation of the underlying network concepts is written for Destiny, so it should be treated as general networking guidance when applied to Marathon—not as a Marathon-specific diagnosis. The guide distinguishes two potential causes:
- High latency: data takes too long to travel between the player and the server, so the response arrives late.
- Packet loss: some data is lost along the way, so communication is incomplete or has to recover from missing information.
Either can contribute to an experience that feels unresponsive or inconsistent. The guide lists network congestion, Wi-Fi conditions, geographic distance, older hardware or firmware, and potentially damaged hardware among factors that can affect connection quality. Those are possible contributors, not proof that any one of them is responsible for a particular Marathon session. Read Bungie’s Optimizing Connections: Improving Latency and Packet Loss with that scope in mind.

Reduce competing network traffic
If multiple devices or applications are transferring data at the same time, temporarily pause downloads or other heavy home-network traffic and see whether Marathon behaves differently. Bungie’s guide identifies congestion as a possible factor in latency and packet loss. If the symptom improves under a quieter network, that suggests congestion may contribute, although it does not pinpoint whether the bottleneck is inside the home or farther along the internet connection.
Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet
If you can, test a wired Ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi. Bungie recommends a wired comparison in its Destiny guidance as a way to help rule out Wi-Fi signal strength or stability. If the connection improves when wired, Wi-Fi conditions are a plausible factor. If it does not, that result does not prove the home network is faultless; congestion, the ISP path, service conditions, or other causes remain possible.
Consider router or modem age and firmware
Bungie’s general guide lists older networking hardware or firmware, as well as possible hardware damage, among factors that can contribute to connection problems. If your equipment has not been updated or appears unreliable, check its manufacturer’s instructions for available firmware updates and basic diagnostics. The reviewed Marathon materials do not specify a particular router model, firmware version, or setting, so do not apply model-specific instructions from an unrelated guide without verifying that they fit your equipment.

A connection can appear normal in a speed test or in other apps and still experience intermittent packet loss or connection problems. In a June 2026 Bungie Help forum exchange about a Marathon player report, Bungie Help said errors could involve local hardware, packet loss, or ISP-level problems even when the connection seemed fine at a glance. That was guidance in response to one player, not a diagnosis of all players’ issues. The exchange is available in the Bungie Help forum thread.

Work out which part of the connection may be involved
Several layers can produce similar symptoms. The evidence available for Marathon is not equally detailed for each one, so use this as a way to organize observations—not as a definitive fault-finding chart.
Local Wi-Fi or home network
Wireless signal strength, stability, competing traffic, and the condition of home networking equipment can affect a connection. A wired-versus-Wi-Fi comparison and a test during a quieter period can help identify whether local conditions are contributing. Bungie’s specific discussion of these factors is in Destiny support material, so applying it here is a general diagnostic inference.
The ISP or internet path
Even if your own connection looks healthy, a problem can occur elsewhere between your home and the game service. Bungie Help’s June 2026 forum response mentioned ISP-level problems as one possibility alongside local hardware and packet loss. If the issue recurs after basic checks, the response recommends contacting your ISP. A forum reply is support guidance, not a Marathon error-code playbook or a confirmed diagnosis of an individual connection.

The materials cited here do not provide a live service-status diagnosis for a particular incident.

Game client or matchmaking state
A crash may be client-side, while a queue selecting the wrong mode can reflect matchmaking state. The July 9, 2026 patch note documents one specific Solo Queue state defect and says it was fixed. Neither source establishes a comprehensive list of current client crashes, matchmaking failures, or error codes, so capture the exact behavior and check for relevant current updates.
When to contact support or your ISP
If Marathon problems continue after straightforward comparisons, the next contact depends on what you have observed. For repeated connection errors that remain unexplained, Bungie Help’s response to the June 2026 Marathon player report points players to Bungie’s networking material and suggests contacting the ISP if the problem persists. Use the forum exchange as general support guidance, not as a guaranteed diagnosis or a formal Marathon-specific escalation procedure.
- For a reproducible wrong-queue selection, include the queue you chose and the queue the game entered, then check current Marathon update notes.
- For a mid-run crash or disconnect, distinguish whether Marathon closed, returned to a menu, or lost the connection, and whether you could reconnect to the shell.
- For lag or recurring network errors, note whether the issue changes on Ethernet, during periods with less home-network traffic, or across repeated sessions.
These details describe the symptom and the comparisons you have already made without pretending to identify the fault. If contacting the ISP, share the timing and recurrence of the issue and ask it to investigate the connection path; if contacting Bungie, provide the game behavior and any relevant error message. The sources do not establish a specific Marathon support form or a required set of diagnostic logs.

Bungie’s Network Troubleshooting Guide covers advanced topics such as UPnP, port forwarding, and NAT troubleshooting for Destiny. The materials reviewed here do not establish Marathon-specific port numbers or router settings. Consequently, copying Destiny port-forwarding instructions into Marathon troubleshooting would go beyond what is documented for this game. Do not open ports or alter NAT settings based only on a generic claim that doing so will fix a Marathon disconnect.
Use the guide’s basic connection concepts cautiously, but keep game-specific configuration separate. If Bungie publishes Marathon-specific network requirements, follow those instructions as written and for the relevant platform. The current evidence cited here supports reconnecting after interruption, checking the documented queue-state fix, and using basic network comparisons; it does not support a tailored port-forwarding recipe.
