What Destroyer is supposed to do
Destroyer is Marathon’s frontline Runner Shell. The official shell description calls it “the team’s tank” and says Destroyer shells are “aggressive, relentless, and built to charge headfirst into combat.” That identity matters more than any individual weapon: your loadout should help you enter contested space, survive the first exchange, draw attention and keep your squad moving through the fight. See the official shell overview on PlayStation’s Marathon Runner shells page.

Thrusters and Riot Barricade are the center of that job. Barricade gives you a way to claim a doorway, revive route or objective approach instead of trading shots in the open. Thrusters let you close distance, break an angle or reach cover while opponents are focused on the barrier. A Destroyer build that cannot threaten enemies once the barrier is down is incomplete, which is why the recommended pairing includes both a close-range weapon and a longer-range option.

The clearest documented template is the “Castle Crasher Destroyer” setup from Mobalytics. It is labeled a Season 1, high-budget community build and was updated March 9, 2026. The guide identifies the WSTR Combat Shotgun for close combat and the BR33 Volley Rifle for medium-to-longer-range coverage, with Bubble Shield, Shield Protector V3, a 24XS Med Pack, Counter Attack cores and Impact Siphons cores. Its stated strengths are frontline room clearing and close-to-medium engagements; its weaknesses are long-range fights and a learning curve. | Slot | Starting choice | Job in the build | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary close-range weapon | WSTR Combat Shotgun | Finish enemies after a Barricade push, clear rooms and punish anyone who contests your space. | The guide presents it as a role fit, not as a statistically proven best shotgun. |
| Secondary ranged weapon | BR33 Volley Rifle | Apply pressure before you commit and cover medium-to-longer sightlines when a shotgun approach is unsafe. | The community build’s range description is medium to longer range; controlled damage or win-rate data is not stated. |
| Defensive equipment | Bubble Shield | Create a temporary safe pocket for a push, reset, revive or objective interaction. | Use is recommended by the community build; it is not an official requirement. |
| Shield item | Shield Protector V3 | Support the shield-focused frontline plan and give you more room to absorb attention. | Exact numeric protection or duration is not stated in the cited guide. |
| Healing item | 24XS Med Pack | Recover after the first breach so Destroyer can remain in the fight instead of abandoning the position. | The guide names the item but does not establish a comparative healing ranking. |
| Core choices | Counter Attack and Impact Siphons | Reinforce the close-range, shield-and-retaliation game plan. | These are community recommendations; exact in-game effects and values should be checked in your current build screen. |
| Shell ability focus | Riot Barricade with Thrusters | Take space, force an enemy response and choose when the shotgun engagement begins. | The official page establishes Destroyer’s frontline role, not a numerical ability ranking. |
Why the shotgun-and-rifle pairing works
WSTR Combat Shotgun: the breach tool
Riot Barricade is most valuable when it changes where the fight happens. The WSTR Combat Shotgun converts that protected approach into immediate close-range threat. Place or use the barrier to deny a clean angle, move with Thrusters, then take the short fight before opponents can spread out. In a building, this can mean clearing the room behind the first doorway rather than stopping at the threshold. Around an objective, it means making an opponent decide between giving ground and entering your preferred distance.
The weakness is predictable: if the enemy can keep you in the open or maintain a long sightline, the shotgun does not solve the problem by itself. Do not spend Thrusters simply to cross exposed ground. Use cover, the rifle and your squad’s pressure to make the final approach safer.
BR33 Volley Rifle: the range bridge
The BR33 Volley Rifle fills the period when Riot Barricade is unavailable, the enemy refuses to push, or your squad needs damage before committing. It also lets Destroyer contribute while rotating between pieces of cover. Think of it as a bridge to the shotgun, not a reason to play like a backline marksman: your eventual value comes from turning that pressure into controlled space and a close-range finish.

Swap to the rifle when distance, sightline or enemy positioning makes the shotgun an obvious losing trade. Swap back before entering a room or taking a corner. This simple range discipline prevents the most common failure of the build—arriving at the fight with the wrong weapon ready.

Alternative weapons when the default pair does not fit
A separate Destroyer guide updated June 2, 2026 lists the WSTR Combat Shotgun, Retaliator LMG and Copperhead RF as recommendations. It describes the shotgun as a close-range follow-up to Riot Barricade and the LMG as a medium-range option. The guide is useful for choosing a role, but neither it nor the Castle Crasher page establishes a definitive statistical ranking, pick rate, win rate or time-to-kill advantage. See Mobalytics’ Destroyer guide for that role-based list.
| Weapon option | Choose it when | What changes in your play | Evidence status |
|---|---|---|---|
| WSTR Combat Shotgun | You expect room fights, tight cover and direct Barricade pushes. | Commit to closing distance and use the rifle or teammates to prevent enemies from kiting you. | Recommended by both cited community guides; no controlled ranking stated. |
| BR33 Volley Rifle | You want the documented close/medium-to-long range split. | Pressure from cover, then switch to the shotgun before the breach. | Named in the Season 1 Castle Crasher build; current post-update superiority is not established. |
| Retaliator LMG | Your squad needs sustained medium-range fire and you expect fewer pure room clears. | Hold lanes longer and support a push without relying on repeated rifle bursts. | Listed as a Destroyer recommendation; comparative performance data is not stated. |
| Copperhead RF | You prefer the handling or range behavior of that rifle for the routes you play. | Use it to cover approaches while preserving Barricade for the decisive entry. | Listed as an option in the June 2 guide; no ranking or test result is supplied. |
Choose by expected engagement distance, the weapon that covers the time when Riot Barricade is unavailable, and what your squad already brings. If another teammate reliably supplies long-range pressure, the shotgun-plus-medium-range option can be more useful than doubling up on distant fire. If your team lacks lane control, a rifle or LMG that you can use confidently may matter more than copying a named build.
Equipment and cores: build for the job, not the label
Bubble Shield
Bubble Shield supports the same sequence as Riot Barricade: create a protected pocket, force opponents to respect it, and use the time to heal, reload, revive or close the final distance. Avoid dropping it automatically at the first sight of an enemy. A shield placed too early can expire before the breach, while one placed after your team has already lost the angle may only delay an inevitable retreat.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsShield Protector V3
Shield Protector V3 belongs in this template because the documented build emphasizes staying power. Treat it as permission to contest space, not as permission to stand in every line of fire. Track exits before you commit; a tank who cannot disengage gives the opposing team an easy focus target.
24XS Med Pack
The med pack is what turns a successful first contact into continued pressure. Heal behind the barrier or Bubble Shield, not in the open, and communicate when you are resetting so teammates know whether to hold or push. The cited guide names the item but does not provide a comparison with other healing items, so select a different medical option if your current patch or inventory makes it more practical.
Counter Attack and Impact Siphons
These cores reinforce the retaliation pattern: survive the initial exchange, then punish the opponent who has to enter your space. Their inclusion is a community recommendation rather than a developer-mandated combination. If your own build screen shows a changed effect, cost or prerequisite, prioritize the current in-game description over an older guide label.
A practical Destroyer combat sequence
- Scout the approach. Identify the nearest hard cover, the likely enemy escape route and the distance at which your shotgun becomes reliable. Keep the BR33 Volley Rifle, Retaliator LMG or Copperhead RF ready if the approach is exposed.
- Make the first contact on your terms. Use ranged pressure or a teammate’s opening to make opponents look away. Do not burn Thrusters merely to arrive first; save the movement for the moment it creates a favorable angle.
- Deploy Riot Barricade to claim space. Place it where it blocks the most dangerous line while leaving your squad a route to follow. The objective is a usable position, not a decorative wall.
- Close with Thrusters. Move while the enemy is deciding whether to challenge the barrier. Keep the shotgun selected before the final corner so your first close-range shot is not delayed by a weapon swap.
- Finish or force the retreat. If the enemy commits, take the close fight. If they back away, let the ranged weapon and your teammates maintain pressure rather than chasing into an uncovered lane.
- Reset behind protection. Use Bubble Shield, the med pack and your shield item to recover. Reload and check ability availability before the next push; Destroyer is strongest when the second engagement is planned, not improvised.
- Rotate when the angle is lost. A tank’s job is to hold the frontline, not to donate a life after the barrier has become irrelevant. Move to the next piece of cover and repeat the process.
Variants for different fights
| Situation | Prioritize | De-emphasize | Decision rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indoor objective or compact compound | WSTR Combat Shotgun, Riot Barricade, Bubble Shield and a fast reset. | Long, exposed peeks. | Take the fight only after your barrier or cover makes the entrance contestable. |
| Mixed terrain with medium sightlines | Shotgun plus BR33 Volley Rifle, or the Retaliator LMG if sustained medium fire suits you better. | Early Thruster commits across open ground. | Use ranged pressure to shorten the distance safely, then switch for the breach. |
| Long lanes and sparse cover | BR33 Volley Rifle, Retaliator LMG or Copperhead RF, with Barricade reserved for crossings. | Repeated solo shotgun charges. | If you cannot reach close range with cover, hold a lane or rotate rather than forcing the matchup. |
| Squad-protection assignment | Shield-focused equipment, Bubble Shield and a clear retreat route for teammates. | Chasing a fleeing opponent beyond squad support. | Your position is successful when your team can move, heal or revive behind it. |
| Solo or separated from the squad | A ranged weapon you can use confidently and enough defensive timing to disengage. | Assuming Barricade alone will win a numerically equal fight. | Force one favorable exchange, then reset before another enemy angle arrives. |
How current balance changes affect older builds
Bungie’s Season 2 Combat Tuning Preview says the team is adjusting ammo economy, time-to-kill and weapon range identities so close-range weapons remain dangerous up close while mid-range options hold their ground. It also discusses buildcrafting and implants, including a change intended to make Prime and Tactical Recovery at 100 stat accelerate ability cooldowns less, preserving more counterplay.
Those goals are important when evaluating the loadout, but the preview does not prove that WSTR, BR33, Retaliator or Copperhead is currently the top statistical choice. A Season 1 community build is therefore a snapshot. After a balance update, check whether ammunition availability, effective range or ability downtime changes how often you can execute the shotgun-and-rifle sequence. Keep the structure if it still matches your fights; replace an item when its role no longer covers the distance or timing you need.

Bungie’s Marathon Update 1.1.5 notes also document a bug fix: sustained damage from the Biotoxic Disinjector now counts toward Search and Destroy rocket charges. That is a correction to an interaction, not evidence that Biotoxic Disinjector is an overall best Destroyer weapon. Do not select it solely because the patch notes mention it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Optional controller setup for PlayStation players
Bungie’s recommendations, summarized in an April 28, 2026 PlayStation Blog article, suggest that Destroyer players using a DualSense Edge can map one back button to jump for faster Thruster activation while keeping their aim on the sticks, and another to sprint for Tactical Sprint. This can make the close-in sequence easier to execute, but the controller is optional and is not part of the in-game loadout.
The same article stresses that there is no single perfect sensitivity. Start with a setting that lets you track targets at shotgun distance, then make small changes rather than copying a value blindly. Test one adjustment at a time in safe fights so you know whether the change improved your turns, recoil control or ability activation.
Common mistakes and fixes
Charging before the team is ready
Symptom: You reach the enemy first, spend Thrusters and die before the squad can use the opening. Fix: Call the push, place Barricade where teammates can follow and hold your movement until the enemy’s attention is divided.
Using the shotgun at rifle distance
Symptom: You lose health while crossing an open lane and arrive unable to win the close fight. Fix: Use the BR33, Retaliator or Copperhead to pressure from cover, and only commit when terrain shortens the exposure.
Holding the rifle after entering a room
Symptom: An opponent appears at close range while you are still on your ranged weapon. Fix: Preselect the shotgun before the final corner and reload during protected resets, not during the breach.
Placing every defensive tool at once
Symptom: Riot Barricade and Bubble Shield expire together, leaving no answer for the counterpush. Fix: Stagger them when possible: use one to establish the position and keep the other for the enemy’s response or your recovery.
Confusing a named build with a verified meta ranking
Symptom: You keep an item that does not fit your map, squad or current patch because a guide called it “best.” Fix: Treat the cited builds as role-based templates. Compare each choice by range, downtime coverage and survivability, then change one slot at a time.
How to tune the build for your own matches
Record what actually causes your deaths and what creates your successful entries. If most losses happen before you reach shotgun range, change the ranged weapon or route before changing cores. If you win the first exchange but cannot survive the counterpush, preserve Bubble Shield or the med pack for the reset and reconsider how early you spend Barricade. If your squad already has strong medium-range pressure, the default shotgun-plus-rifle split may be more valuable than adding another lane-holder.
Make adjustments in a controlled order:
- Keep Riot Barricade and Thrusters fixed while testing the weapon pair, so you can tell whether range coverage is the problem.
- Keep the weapons fixed while changing one defensive item, so you can separate survivability from damage changes.
- Change cores only after you know whether your failure is an entry problem, a reset problem or a cooldown problem.
- Recheck the official patch notes after balance updates; ammo economy, time-to-kill and range identity can change the value of an otherwise sound Season 1 template.
Verdict
For a Destroyer player who wants one dependable starting point, use WSTR Combat Shotgun plus BR33 Volley Rifle, then pair them with Riot Barricade, Thrusters, Bubble Shield, Shield Protector V3, a 24XS Med Pack, Counter Attack and Impact Siphons. The setup directly supports the shell’s job: create a protected entry, win the close fight and remain useful when the enemy stays farther away. Switch to Retaliator LMG or Copperhead RF when their medium-range handling better matches your map and squad, and reassess every named recommendation after combat tuning. No source cited here establishes a permanent statistical best-in-slot loadout, so the best Destroyer build is the version that covers your actual engagement distances without sacrificing the ability to disengage.
