Its roadmap puts an October 2026 Nightfall Refresh ahead of Symbiosis, planned for December 2026, while describing a broader goal: keep the danger of extraction but add more ways to learn, explore and play. Here’s what Bungie has actually said—and what it has not yet confirmed.
What Bungie is teasing for Marathon
In its Marathon roadmap, Bungie says the game needs to grow beyond its original cutthroat extraction format without losing the high-stakes experience. The studio’s stated direction includes more accessible ways to learn and explore, more agency over Runner progression, new combatants and narrative discoveries, and an entirely new zone. These are roadmap goals, not confirmation that those additions are already in the game. Bungie’s roadmap describes cooperative PvE, competitive PvP and PvPvE as experiences it wants to support.

What is on the announced roadmap, and when?
| Roadmap item | Timing Bungie gave | What Bungie has said |
|---|---|---|
| Nightfall Refresh | October 2026 | A focused improvement to the live experience while larger additions are in development. |
| Symbiosis | December 2026 | A significant step toward more ways to play and lower-pressure ways to learn and explore. |
| Further development | March 2027 and beyond | Bungie described continued work toward the broader evolution of Marathon; specific delivery details are not established in the roadmap statement. |
Bungie says it is moving away from strict seasonal release timing and will set the pace according to the work and what the team can support. Dates and features in the roadmap should therefore be read as plans, not guarantees that content arrived on schedule. Check Bungie’s roadmap post and later status updates for changes.
Why Bungie says Marathon needs to change
In a September 17, 2026 leadership post, Bungie said Marathon had not reached as many players as hoped and needed to evolve. Poria Torkan, Bungie Studio Head, and Josh Deane, Head of Product and Marathon General Manager, wrote: “Marathon is an important part of shaping where Bungie goes next, but it was never intended to replace Destiny.” The post gives no player-count or sales figure, so the statement is qualitative rather than a published performance measure. #1 Best Overall
- From the makers of the acclaimed hit game Destiny, comes the much-anticipated sequel
- An action shooter that takes you on an epic journey across the solar system
- Humanity’s last safe city has fallen to an overwhelming invasion force, led by Ghaul, the imposing commander of the brutal Red Legion
- To defeat the Red Legion and confront Ghaul, you must reunite humanity’s scattered heroes, stand together, and fight back to reclaim our home
Bungie had also described specific friction in a May 14, 2026 retrospective. Game director Joe Ziegler said learning the game could feel overwhelming, progression could be difficult without a regular crew or extensive play time, and endgame balance remained an issue. These are Bungie’s observations; the post does not provide a sample size or quantified player study. Read the launch retrospective.
How the proposed direction could change the way you play
Marathon launched as a science-fiction PvP extraction shooter set on Tau Ceti IV. Players take the role of cybernetic mercenaries called Runners and can go solo or with a crew. Its launch loop is high-stakes PvPvE extraction: players contend with both other players and threats in the environment. Bungie’s roadmap points toward more options for people seeking cooperative PvE or competitive PvP, as well as PvPvE—but it does not establish that all those experiences are available now.
Rank #2
- Online only and requires a PlayStation Plus membership.
- An incredible story set within a newly-imagined, always-connected universe filled with action and adventure.
- Create your character, forge your legend by defeating powerful foes, and earn unique and customizable weapons, gear, and vehicles.
- Unprecedented variety of FPS gameplay that redefines the genre and breaks traditional conventions of story, cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes.
- If you want the current high-stakes extraction experience: the launch PvPvE loop is the relevant baseline.
- If you want to explore or learn with less pressure: Bungie says it is working toward lower-pressure entry points, with Symbiosis described as a significant step in that direction.
- If you prefer a particular kind of interaction: Bungie has named cooperative PvE and competitive PvP among its intended experiences, but the roadmap does not fully specify their formats or availability.
Marathon is set in the world of the original Marathon trilogy, but Bungie says the game is neither a remake nor a direct sequel. Its official FAQ provides the basic setting and game context.
