Aleph One is a free, open-source continuation of Bungie’s Marathon 2 game engine that lets players run the Marathon trilogy and community-made scenarios on modern macOS, Windows, and Linux computers. It is an engine, not a standalone campaign: to play, install Aleph One and provide the data files for a game or scenario.

What Aleph One continues—and what it does not

The Aleph One project describes its software as a continuation of Bungie’s Marathon 2 engine; its source repository also calls it a continuation of the Marathon Infinity engine. “Continuation” means a community-maintained, open-source project that extends the engine for modern computers and new content. It does not mean Bungie currently develops Aleph One. The project publishes the engine under the GNU General Public License, version 3.

The distinction between engine and game content matters: Aleph One supplies the software that runs a scenario, while the scenario supplies its levels, story, and other game data. The project provides downloads for the original trilogy as well as a catalogue of community scenarios.

What you need to play

  • Aleph One: the engine application for your desktop operating system.
  • Scenario data: files for Marathon, Marathon 2, Marathon Infinity, or another compatible scenario.
  • A supported desktop platform: the official download page lists macOS, Windows, and Linux Flatpak instructions.

The official download page displays Aleph One version 1.11, released August 29, 2025. That is the version and date shown on the project page; it should not be read as proof that no newer build exists. See the Aleph One downloads and platform instructions.

Install the engine and launch a scenario

The project’s ordinary-player instructions use the scenario folder to bring the engine and the selected game data together. The exact steps vary by platform:

macOS

  1. Download the macOS Aleph One application and the scenario data you want to play.
  2. Place Aleph One in the scenario folder, following the project’s download instructions.
  3. Launch the application from that folder.

Windows

  1. Download Aleph One and the scenario data.
  2. Put Aleph One.exe in the scenario folder.
  3. Launch the executable.

Linux with Flatpak

  1. Install Aleph One using the Flatpak instructions on the official download page.
  2. Download and unpack the scenario data.
  3. Launch the engine with that scenario directory, using the project’s instructions.

Compiling from source is a separate path for developers, not a prerequisite for playing. The repository’s build notes cover platform-specific toolchains and libraries; consult them only if you intend to build the engine yourself.

Choosing a Marathon campaign

The original trilogy is a natural place to start. The right choice depends on whether you want a particular campaign, refreshed visuals, cooperative play, or compatibility with community maps.

Scenario What the project highlights Why choose it
Marathon The original game in the trilogy, available as scenario data for Aleph One. The cited project pages do not state a level count here. Choose it to begin with the series’ first campaign.
Marathon 2: Durandal The release includes classic graphics alongside refreshed high-definition textures and monsters, according to the Aleph One project. A good fit if you specifically want the game named in Aleph One’s engine lineage.
Marathon Infinity The project describes “Blood Tides of Lh’owon” as a 20-level solo/co-op campaign and says it works with hundreds of community-made maps. It is also the project’s usual choice for online matches. Choose it for solo or cooperative campaign play, broad map compatibility, or the project’s common online-play option.

The level and map figures above are descriptions published by the Aleph One project, not independent audits. Find the trilogy’s scenario downloads and details through the official download page.

Find more scenarios in the community catalogue

The official catalogue lists total conversions and other scenarios, including Trojan, EVIL, Tempus Irae Redux, RED, Eternal, Rubicon X, Phoenix, Yuge, Apotheosis X, and Istoria. The project describes Trojan as 25 levels, Eternal as 52 levels, and Phoenix as a 35-level single-player conversion. These are project-published descriptions, not independently verified counts.

Use the Aleph One scenario catalogue to discover options, then check each scenario’s own information before choosing it. A listing is not a guarantee that every scenario is equally maintained or compatible with every engine release.

How multiplayer works

The project describes multiplayer as peer-to-peer, supporting up to eight players. Local-area-network play is supported; playing over the Internet depends on the host being configured properly. The official site points players to a global matchmaking lobby and identifies Marathon Infinity as the usual choice for online matches. These are the project’s descriptions, not results from an independent test. Start with the official project site for multiplayer information.

Do you need old hardware or a physical copy?

No physical product is identified as necessary by the project’s current download route: it provides downloadable engine binaries, trilogy scenario files, and community content. The archived Marathon Infinity manual describes requirements for the original Macintosh release—among them a 68040-or-better processor, a 13-inch 256-color monitor, System 7 or later, and about 6 MB of available RAM. Those are historical requirements for that original game, not modern Aleph One hardware recommendations.
