March of Giants is a free-to-play 4v4 MOBA where you fight as a Giant while commanding Soldiers and deploying Battleworks. For beginners, the key is to look beyond your own combat: lanes are fronts to advance or defend, the spaces between them matter, and objectives are decisions about where your team should spend its attention.
How the battlefield works
Ubisoft describes March of Giants as a 4v4 tactical MOBA combining lane-based combat, coordination, real-time strategy, and Giant heroes. Your Giant is both a combatant and a commander: Soldiers fight alongside Giants, while Battleworks—structures such as trenches, tanks, turrets, and bunkers—help shape how a battle develops. Ubisoft’s game overview and its acquisition announcement describe those broad systems.
The useful beginner mental model is to track three things at once: what your Giant is doing, how Soldiers are progressing, and how structures and routes affect control of the battlefield. Winning a skirmish matters, but it is only one part of a wider push or defense.
What should I do in my lane?
Think of a lane as a front to advance or defend, not simply a path where you act alone. Ubisoft’s Development Team puts it plainly: “Lanes become fronts to advance and defend.” Keep an eye on the Soldiers moving through your front and on whether your team is gaining or losing ground.

Do not let the lane become your entire map. Ubisoft says the spaces between lanes have become more important for progression and map control. Watch where teammates are moving and pay attention to opportunities or threats away from your immediate front. The available official descriptions do not establish lane names, a complete route map, or fixed lane assignments, so follow the current in-game map rather than assuming a familiar layout.
How Soldiers and Battleworks affect a push
Soldiers
Soldiers are part of the lane battle, not background decoration. Ubisoft says their role has broadened since the September 2025 Closed Alpha. Follow how they are advancing, and consider whether your team needs to help a push or prevent the opposing side from gaining ground.

Battleworks
Battleworks include structures such as trenches, tanks, turrets, and bunkers. Ubisoft says these systems have gained more interaction and counterplay since the Closed Alpha. Their exact use depends on the current build, but they reinforce the point that a lane’s development is shaped by more than Giant-versus-Giant combat.
When should our team take objectives?
Objectives represent territory worth contesting, but the exact value of a particular objective depends on its current in-game reward, capture conditions, and the position of both teams. Check the objective description in the current build for its timer, reward, and requirements; do not rely on old Alpha timings or rewards as if they were current.

Ubisoft’s retrospective on the September 2025 Closed Alpha said neutral-objective tuning and rewards at that time did not make it clear when the team should group for major objectives or take smaller camps to support rotations. The studio said it was refining their role and impact. That is evidence of ongoing design iteration, not a guide to today’s reward table. Read Ubisoft’s development update.
As a practical decision, weigh the current reward against the commitment it takes to secure it, the risk of leaving your lane, and whether the objective helps your team move between fronts. If the value is unclear, coordinate before several players leave a lane at once.

Which role should I play?
The official material does not establish a fixed lane-role chart or prescribe a standard tank, carry, and support lineup. Avoid assuming every lane has a required occupant or that a familiar MOBA template applies unchanged. Ubisoft says itemization has expanded to support more specialized builds and different ways to play each Giant, so treat roles as flexible rather than permanent labels.
Instead, ask what the team needs at that moment:
- Pressure or defense: help advance a front or stop the opposing push.
- Territory: help the team secure an objective when its current value justifies the commitment.
- Battlefield support: account for Soldiers and Battleworks as part of the lane, not just the Giants fighting nearby.
- Movement between fronts: notice when teammates need help away from your lane and when leaving would expose it.
This is a way to think about team needs, not an official Ubisoft role taxonomy. Choose a Giant and build based on current game information and how you want to contribute.

What has changed since the Closed Alpha?
Ubisoft’s account of development since the September 2025 Closed Alpha describes broader Soldier roles, more interaction and counterplay for Battleworks, greater importance for spaces between lanes, and itemization that supports more specialized builds. The studio also says it has worked on the roster, map, interface, visuals, animations, and clarity. These are descriptions of design direction, not a substitute for current patch notes or in-game rules.
Access and dates to verify
In an October 2026 development update, Ubisoft announced a YouTube presentation and the start of the Pioneer Playtest for October 7, 2026. An October 2026 interview with Ubisoft Montréal placed Early Access in summer 2027. Those are announced plans, which can change; check Ubisoft’s current March of Giants updates for the latest schedule and playtest access details.
