Do you need a Mario Kart 64 ROM?
Yes. The project README says, “SpaghettiKart does not include any copyrighted assets,” and requires you to provide a supported copy of the game. The documented requirement is a US ROM in .z64 format with SHA-1 hash 579C48E211AE952530FFC8738709F078D5DD215E. The README links to tools for checking the hash and converting byte order; consult that guide rather than relying on an unverified file or mirror.
The project’s distribution policy does not determine whether making or using a ROM is lawful for you. Laws vary by jurisdiction, and the reviewed sources do not establish a universal legal answer.

How to download and install it
Follow the current README in the official repository. Its quick-start directions include these platform-specific workflows:
Windows
- Download a release using the link in the README.
- Extract the release archive and run
Spaghettify.exe. - Select your supported US ROM when prompted.
Linux
- Download and extract the release files.
- Make sure
zenityorkdialogis installed. - Run
spaghetti.appimage. If it will not launch, check whether the file needs executable permission.
Nintendo Switch
The README describes a file-generation workflow: run a PC release to generate mk64.o2r, then copy the necessary files to the SD card. Follow the current README for the complete procedure, since filenames and steps may change.

Which release should you get?
The Releases page checked on October 8, 2026 labeled Bolognese Alfa 1.0.0 as its latest release. That is a time-specific listing, not a permanent version number; check the current Releases page before downloading. Release notes describe changes including a custom-track system expansion, gameplay and multiplayer fixes, interface improvements, a new audio driver, and build changes. These are project-reported notes, not independent performance test results.
The repository also links nightly builds for multiple targets. The project labels these as playtesting builds that may contain bugs or crash, so a regular release is the more straightforward starting point for most players.

Can you play with a keyboard?
Yes. The README documents keyboard bindings as well as an SDL gamepad mapping, so a gamepad is optional. Choose whichever input method suits your setup; the project does not require buying a controller. It lists DirectX 11 for Windows, OpenGL across platforms, and Metal for macOS as graphics API options. Check the current documentation for platform-specific details.
