For different kinds of groups, Nintendo also lists Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV, Super Mario Bros. Wonder – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park, and Kirby Air Riders as multiplayer options. The right choice depends on whether everyone will share one system, bring a console, or play online.
What “local multiplayer” means on Switch 2
For same-room play, distinguish between sharing one system and linking nearby systems. Same-system local multiplayer means players use one Switch 2. Local wireless connects nearby consoles in a compatible game; its player limit, copy requirements, and controller rules vary by title. Nintendo describes these as separate ways to play together, so check the specific game’s mode before planning a group.
The player counts below are Nintendo’s published capacities, not a ranking based on comparative testing. Nintendo’s family multiplayer page is a useful shortlist, not a complete catalog of every Switch 2-compatible game.
Which Switch 2 game fits your group?
| Game | Players on one system | Local wireless | What you play | Important setup note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mario Kart World | 1–4 in TV or tabletop mode; 1 in handheld mode | 2–8 players across consoles | Racing, Knockout Tour, and Battle | Up to two players per console; one copy is required for each console in local wireless. |
| Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV | 1–4 | Not stated on Nintendo’s Multiplayer family fun page | Board play and audience participation through Jamboree TV | Nintendo lists up to 20 online players; that is not its single-system capacity. |
| Super Mario Bros. Wonder – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park | 1–4 | 2–8 | Side-scrolling platforming in the Flower Kingdom | Local wireless requires multiple nearby systems; check the game’s instructions for copy and controller requirements. |
| Kirby Air Riders | 1–4 | 2–8 | Vehicular action with racing and attacks | Nintendo lists up to 16 online players. Confirm current release and availability before buying or planning around it. |
Player capacities and descriptions are from Nintendo’s Mario Kart World product information and Multiplayer family fun page. An online maximum describes online play, not how many people can share one console.
#1 Best Overall
- Explore a vast underground world—by smashing your way through it!
- A brand-new 3D platforming action adventure starring Donkey Kong and Pauline
- Bash through just about anything in groundbreaking exploration! Crash through walls and carve tunnels—the more you smash, the more areas open up to you

- Team up with a friend in two-player co-op as Donkey Kong and Pauline! Blast foes and terrain alike with Pauline’s voice as you explore together
Best pick for a group that wants to race: Mario Kart World
Choose Mario Kart World if your friends want a straightforward racing night. Four people can play on one console in TV or tabletop mode. Handheld mode is listed for one player, so it is not the shared-screen option for a group.
If the group has more systems, local wireless supports two to eight players, with no more than two players on each Switch 2 and a copy required for every console. Race, Knockout Tour, and Battle are supported in local wireless. Knockout Tour is a checkpoint-based elimination race; Free Roam lets players explore the connected world and is available while waiting for a match.

- Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer
Nintendo lists online play for up to 24 players, but that is a separate setup from same-room local multiplayer. Its product page says internet features require a Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online membership.
Best for board-game energy: Super Mario Party Jamboree
Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV is the shortlist’s board-play option, with Jamboree TV audience participation as another group-focused feature. Nintendo lists one to four players on a single system and up to 20 online. If your friends are sitting around one Switch 2, use the single-system limit when deciding whether the game fits; the online count does not increase the number who can share that console.
Rank #3

Best for cooperative platforming: Super Mario Bros. Wonder
Super Mario Bros. Wonder – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park suits friends who would rather tackle a side-scrolling platform game than compete in races or board play. Nintendo lists up to four players on one system and two to eight through local wireless. The Switch 2 edition is set in the Flower Kingdom; for a group using multiple consoles, confirm the title’s exact copy and controller requirements before everyone arrives.
Consider Kirby Air Riders if you want vehicular action
Kirby Air Riders combines racing with attacks, making it a different kind of competitive choice from Mario Kart World. Nintendo lists one to four players on a system and two to eight in local wireless, plus up to 16 online. Nintendo’s page describes it as a Switch 2 game; check current release and availability before treating it as a purchasable option.
Rank #4

What to prepare before friends come over
For one-console play
- Check the game’s single-system player count and supported play mode. Mario Kart World, for example, supports four on a console in TV or tabletop mode, but only one in handheld mode.
- Plan controllers for the whole group. Each Switch 2 includes two Joy-Con 2 controllers; groups larger than two may need additional controllers, sold separately.
- Nintendo Switch Joy-Con can pair with Switch 2, but check the game’s compatibility and play mode rather than assuming every controller works in every setup.
For local wireless
- Confirm how many consoles the game supports and how many players may use each console. In Mario Kart World, each system can host up to two players.
- Check how many game copies are needed. Mario Kart World requires a copy for each console in local wireless.
- Keep the group’s plan to local wireless distinct from online play; the modes have different requirements.
GameShare and optional camera features
GameShare may let a Switch 2 share supported games with friends who do not own them, but support depends on the title. Do not assume it replaces a required copy for every game or mode; check the game’s current listing and instructions. A compatible USB-C camera is optional for CameraPlay and video features, not a requirement for local multiplayer.
