Mario Kart World pairs a colorful, varied landscape with a new idea for the series: roads connect its courses into a world you can race across or explore. It launched exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, 2025, so it will not run on the original Nintendo Switch. The visual variety is a clear draw, but the game is also built around competitive races and playing with other people.
Why Mario Kart World looks distinctive
Nintendo describes a world that moves between cities, plains, desert, and ocean, with changing weather and a day/night cycle. Its courses are not simply isolated destinations: connecting roads let racers travel from one location toward another. That gives the scenery a role in the game’s structure, not just its backdrop.
The Guardian’s review highlights the varied environments and the pleasure of exploring the connected map. Nintendo Life likewise praises the presentation and describes the landscape as lush. Those are reviewers’ impressions, rather than a guarantee that every player will find the world equally compelling; Nintendo Life also cautions that Free Roam may feel less rewarding than an open-world label suggests.
How the connected world changes the racing
Grand Prix links courses into cups
Grand Prix remains the structured option: race through a cup of four events, with routes connecting one course to the next. Nintendo Life finds the transitions between races awkward, so players looking for a sequence of clean, self-contained tracks may prefer a more traditional kart-racing format.
#1 Best Overall
- Race from one course to another through interconnected paths that span the world
- Traverse mountains, forests, cities, and more—with shifting weather patterns and a day/night cycle
- Ride on rails, jump off walls, skim across water, and more as you race for the finish line
- Take on the adrenaline-packed Knockout Tour—a fierce 24-driver elimination mode
- Explore courses at your own pace and wander the world to discover fun surprises in Free Roam
Knockout Tour adds long-form competition
Knockout Tour is the most distinct new competitive mode. Racers follow a long route and must stay ahead of elimination cutoffs at checkpoints. Nintendo lists races with up to 24 racers in supported modes, including Knockout Tour. Nintendo Life singles out the mode as a highlight; it offers a different kind of pressure from a standard cup, where finishing one race is not the end of the challenge.
Free Roam is for exploring at your own pace
Free Roam lets you drive around, find missions and secrets, and take in-game photos. It is the mode that makes the connected map feel most like a place to visit rather than a route to finish. Its rewards are a point of disagreement: Nintendo Life says exploration can feel unrewarding, while The Guardian notes that multiplayer Free Roam is online-only. You can race locally on one console, but you cannot explore together in Free Roam that way.
Rank #2
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Race from one course to another through interconnected paths that span the world
- Traverse mountains, forests, cities, and more—with shifting weather patterns and a day/night cycle
Battle Mode and driving techniques round out the options
Battle Mode includes Balloon Battle and Coin Runners. Nintendo also describes Charge Jump, which can help you clear obstacles, reach rails, grind, briefly ride walls, and find shortcuts. Rewind can return your vehicle to its earlier position in single-player or Free Roam, but rivals keep moving while you rewind.
What you can play with other people
The game is designed to accommodate both couch play and larger races. Nintendo lists split-screen for up to four players on one system, local wireless for up to eight players across systems, and online play. Supported races, including Grand Prix and Knockout Tour, can have up to 24 racers.

The optional Nintendo Switch 2 Camera adds face-camera play, but it is sold separately and is not required for ordinary racing. Nintendo’s April 17, 2025 launch announcement said GameChat would be available without a Nintendo Switch Online membership through March 31, 2026, with a membership required afterward. Because that date has passed, check Nintendo’s current GameChat and Nintendo Switch Online terms before relying on the feature.
Is Mario Kart World a good fit?
- A strong fit: households and friend groups who want local or online races, varied play modes, and a world that connects its courses.
- Consider carefully: players who mainly want isolated traditional tracks, or who expect Free Roam to provide a densely packed open-world experience. Reviewers praise different parts of the game but flag its exploration incentives and Grand Prix transitions as drawbacks.
- Not an option for original Switch owners: Nintendo identifies the game as a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive.
The Guardian sees the connected-map road-trip feeling and shared play as central strengths. GameSpot’s review also frames the linked world as an expansion of the series’ established formula. Taken together, the game’s most persuasive case is not scenery alone: it is the way the world supports several kinds of racing and group play, even if not every mode or transition lands equally well.

Release and price context
Mario Kart World launched on Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, 2025. Nintendo of America’s April 17, 2025 announcement listed a U.S. regular price of $79.99 and said a console bundle with a game download code was also available. That is a dated U.S. list price, not a current retailer quote; prices, bundles, and availability can vary by region and change over time. Nintendo lists the game as available digitally as well as in physical form, so an Amazon listing is not the only way to buy it.

The clearest distinction is structure. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe centers on standalone tracks, while Mario Kart World connects course locations with roads and adds formats such as Knockout Tour and Free Roam. That makes the newer game a more natural choice for players curious about exploration and long-route competition; it does not establish an overall winner. The practical decision also depends on hardware: World requires Switch 2, while the games belong to different platform generations.
