Its connected map gives races a sense of travel that standalone tracks cannot, while Knockout Tour adds a tense, distinctive alternative to Grand Prix. The main qualification is that Free Roam may take longer to click than the racing itself; one reviewer found it a slower-burn attraction.
What makes Mario Kart World different?
Mario Kart World launched exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, 2025. Its central idea is a connected world: roads link courses, and Grand Prix routes include travel between them rather than treating every course as an isolated destination. Nintendo describes the game as featuring Grand Prix, Knockout Tour, Battle Mode, Free Roam, Time Trials and VS Race. Nintendo’s announcement and Play Nintendo’s overview outline the modes and connected-world premise.
The world is more than a backdrop between races: the routes make movement through the map part of the format. GameSpot identified the contiguous map as the game’s biggest departure from standalone tracks, while its review praised the mechanical changes, look and surprises as reasons the game could have staying power. GameSpot’s review frames it as a marquee launch release rather than merely a familiar sequel.
How do the modes hold up?
Knockout Tour makes the strongest case for the new structure
Knockout Tour is an elimination rally: racers pass checkpoints, and the field shrinks at each cutoff. That creates pressure across the connected map, since falling behind can end a run before the next destination. Nintendo Life’s reviewer singled it out as the standout mode, praising its tension, mechanical depth, secrets and charm. Nintendo Life’s review is particularly positive about how the mode uses the world rather than simply adding another set of conventional races.

Grand Prix keeps the familiar racing appeal while adding travel
Grand Prix remains the straightforward choice for players who want structured races. Its routes now connect courses with stretches of road, giving a cup a more continuous feel. That change is the clearest answer to the question of whether the familiar formula has evolved: the racing remains central, but the transition between destinations is part of the experience.
Free Roam is a different pace, not an instant hook for everyone
Free Roam lets players explore, uncover secrets and take on P Switch missions. It suits players who enjoy poking around between races, but it is less immediately compelling than the competitive modes for at least one reviewer. Nintendo Life’s reviewer said the open-world approach took time to click after playing Grand Prix and seeing the tracks. That is a personal response, not evidence that exploration is universally a weakness; it is a useful expectation if you are buying primarily for racing.

Other ways to play
Battle Mode, Time Trials and VS Race round out the listed modes, giving players options beyond the connected Grand Prix routes and elimination format. The mix supports both direct competition and solo practice, though the available material does not establish a separate feature-by-feature comparison of those modes.
Is Mario Kart World worth it as a Switch 2 launch game?
For a Switch 2 owner who wants a game to play repeatedly with friends or family, the case is strong: the connected routes distinguish it from a collection of discrete tracks, and Knockout Tour adds a high-pressure format that makes particularly good use of that design. The multiplayer scale also makes it a natural early-system centerpiece. Nintendo lists support for up to 24 racers in supported modes, four players split-screen on one system, and local wireless play for up to eight players across systems, with up to two players per system. Those are mode-dependent ceilings, not a promise that every mode supports every configuration. Nintendo’s announcement includes the multiplayer qualifications.

Two reviewers have made emphatic launch-game recommendations, but those remain opinions. Nintendo Life concluded, “Everything in Mario Kart World comes together to make it the perfect Switch 2 launch title.” In an October 1, 2026 roundup, TechRadar’s Rhys Wood, Managing Editor, Buying Guides, called it “easily the standout launch title on Nintendo Switch 2.” Nintendo Life’s review and TechRadar’s roundup support the enthusiastic view, but neither statement guarantees that every player will value exploration or the connected routes equally.
If you are considering buying a Switch 2 specifically for this game, the decision depends on whether its racing and multiplayer are enough to justify the console for you. The game is exclusive to Switch 2, so an original Switch is not an alternative platform. Nintendo’s April 2025 announcement gave a US regular price of $79.99; that is the announced price at the time, not a current retailer price check.

What do you need to play?
- Console: Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo announced the game as a Switch 2 exclusive.
- Online play: Nintendo says online features require a Nintendo Account, internet access and Nintendo Switch Online membership. Its announcement said GameChat could be used without membership through March 31, 2026; that period has passed, so check Nintendo’s current regional terms for present requirements.
- Optional steering accessory: Nintendo identifies the separately sold Joy-Con 2 Wheel accessory set as an option for tilt controls. It is not required to play.
- Optional camera: The separately sold Nintendo Switch 2 Camera supports CameraPlay, which displays player faces during online play. It is also not required for the core game.
- Multiplayer setup: Extra games, systems or accessories may be required depending on the mode, according to Nintendo’s multiplayer footnotes.
Verdict
Mario Kart World earns its launch-game reputation through a meaningful structural change, a standout elimination mode and multiplayer breadth. It is an easy recommendation for Switch 2 owners who want a new racing centerpiece. Its open-world exploration is a bonus rather than the surest selling point: if you mainly want direct races, Grand Prix and Knockout Tour make the clearest case; if you expect Free Roam to be the main attraction, know that it may take time to appreciate.
