Mario & Luigi: Brothership is a Nintendo Switch RPG built around two kinds of teamwork: timed cooperation in turn-based battles and paired abilities that help Mario and Luigi explore Concordia. Nintendo’s 2024 trailers highlighted combat and the island-hopping adventure; the game launched on November 7, 2024.
What is Mario & Luigi: Brothership?
It is a seafaring role-playing game for Nintendo Switch. After the destruction of the Uni-Tree breaks the world of Concordia into scattered islands, Mario and Luigi set out aboard Shipshape Island to reconnect them. Nintendo announced the game on June 20, 2024, and lists November 7, 2024, as its release date. Nintendo of America’s launch article and the Nintendo UK product page describe the premise and release.

How exploration works
Shipshape Island serves as the brothers’ base and means of travel. They sail to separate islands, launch from Shipshape Island’s cannon to reach them, and tackle local challenges. Reconnecting islands can open new areas and side quests, so exploration is not just a trip from one battle to the next. Nintendo’s overview describes this island-to-island loop.
What is the combat like?
Combat is turn-based, but attacks and defense call for timed inputs rather than passive menu selection. Nintendo’s US overview assigns Mario’s actions to A and Luigi’s to B. Well-timed inputs strengthen Bros. Attacks, while jumping stomps and hammer strikes are among the brothers’ other offensive options. When enemies attack, players can try to dodge or counter with a correctly timed response. Nintendo of America and Nintendo UK outline these mechanics.

#1 Best Overall
The result is a battle system with both an offensive and defensive rhythm: choose an action, then pay attention to its timing, and stay ready to respond when an enemy moves. Bros. Attacks make cooperation part of the attack itself, while dodges and counters make enemy turns active moments for the player too.
Bros. Attacks
Bros. Attacks are cooperative special moves whose execution depends on timing. Nintendo’s Singapore overview names the Zapperator as one example and describes timed attacks, dodges, and counters. The name and details are from Nintendo’s Singapore game overview; Nintendo’s sources do not establish that every attack follows the same input sequence.

Battle Plugs
Battle Plugs add selectable effects to a fight. Nintendo says they can boost attacks, improve defense, or provide items, and each plug has limited uses before it needs to recharge. The Singapore overview also says plugs can be swapped and combined, giving players options for adjusting their setup. This makes them a tactical layer on top of timing: the player chooses effects for a battle, then still has to execute attacks and defensive responses well. See Nintendo UK’s description and the Nintendo Singapore overview.
How do Bros. Moves and Luigi Logic work?
Not every cooperative mechanic is for combat. Bros. Moves help the brothers cross or manipulate the environment, with Nintendo citing ball and UFO transformations as examples. These abilities can be upgraded. Think of them as exploration tools: they let the pair solve obstacles encountered between battles. Nintendo details them on its US overview, UK product page, and Singapore overview.

- A variety of playable characters are available, some with unique attributes that affect gameplay and platforming physics.
- Younger and less-experienced players will love playing as Toadette, who is brand new to both games, and Nabbit, who was formerly only playable in New Super Luigi U. Both characters offer extra assistance during play.
- Multiplayer sessions are even more fun, frantic, and exciting thanks to entertaining character interactions. Need a boost? Try jumping off a teammate’s head or getting a teammate to throw you.
- Features a wealth of help features, like a Hints gallery, reference videos, and a Super Guide in New Super Mario Bros. U that can complete levels for you if they’re giving you trouble.
- Three additional modes—Boost Rush, Challenges, and Coin Battle—mix up gameplay and add replayability, while also upping the difficulty for players who want to try something harder. Players can use their Mii characters in these modes.
Luigi Logic is Luigi’s inventive problem-solving contribution. Nintendo describes him helping with tasks and gathering items during exploration, as well as assisting in boss encounters. It gives Luigi a role beyond following Mario’s lead: some situations call on his ideas and independent actions to move the adventure forward. Nintendo of America and Play Nintendo describe the feature.

Nintendo’s official trailer descriptions place the videos in the run-up to the November 2024 release. The trailer published September 17, 2024, is described as showing combat with Bros. Attacks, jumps, and hammers. The overview trailer, dated October 10, 2024, is described as taking a closer look at gameplay, combat, and Concordia. These dates and summaries come from the videos’ indexed descriptions: the September trailer and the October overview trailer. They establish what the videos cover, not that every mechanic described above first appeared in either one.

Release and editions
Nintendo lists Mario & Luigi: Brothership for Nintendo Switch, with a physical Game Card edition and a download version on its UK product page. The US launch article displayed $59.99 as the regular price on that page on November 7, 2024; that is a dated US listing, not a statement of today’s price. Nintendo UK lists Pro Controller compatibility, but does not say the controller is required. Check the store for your region for current price and purchase options.
