One published iMore ranking places Rosalina and Bowser in S tier, but it covers only the original ten-character roster. The best character for you depends on the job you want them to do, their five stats, and the gear trade-offs you choose.
Which character is best in Mario Strikers: Battle League?
There is no single best choice for every player or team. Pick for role: use a strong shooter to finish chances, a fast character to move into space, a high-passing player to set up teammates, or a physical character to challenge opponents. Gear then adjusts that character’s strengths—and lowers another stat—so a tier label alone cannot tell you whether a build fits.
The five attributes are Strength, Speed, Shooting, Passing, and Technique. The published stat profiles below help illustrate how to read them; they are base profiles, not guarantees of match results.
| Character | Strength | Speed | Shooting | Passing | Technique | What the profile suggests |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mario | 11 | 12 | 14 | 10 | 16 | Balanced all-rounder; iMore describes him as beginner-friendly. |
| Princess Peach | 9 | 17 | 9 | 13 | 15 | Fast movement and useful technique, with lower strength and shooting. |
| Bowser | 17 | 9 | 17 | 11 | 9 | Physical play and shooting, offset by lower speed. |
| Rosalina | 14 | 9 | 17 | 10 | 13 | Strong shooting and strength, with lower speed. |
| Luigi | 11 | 11 | 10 | 14 | 17 | Passing and technique are his standout attributes. |
These values and play-style descriptions come from iMore’s published character profiles, not a Nintendo competitive ranking. Its guide explains that Strength affects tackling power and resistance, Speed affects movement, Shooting affects shot speed and power, Passing affects pass speed and distance, and Technique affects shot accuracy and Hyper Strike accuracy. Published tier list: the original ten characters
iMore’s ranking is an editorial opinion, not an official Nintendo list or a measured win-rate ranking. It applies to the original ten characters, so it should not be presented as a definitive current order for the full roster.
| Tier | Characters in iMore’s list |
|---|---|
| S | Rosalina, Bowser |
| A | Princess Peach, Mario |
| B | Waluigi, Wario, Donkey Kong, Yoshi |
| C | Luigi, Toad |
Use the list as one author’s view of the base roster, not proof that an S-tier character will outperform every other pick in your lineup. The cited material does not establish tournament pick rates, win rates, or a recent consensus meta for all 16 playable characters.

How gear changes character stats
Nintendo describes gear as a trade-off: a matching piece raises its focus stat by 2 and lowers another stat by 2. The penalty depends on the piece, so check the displayed changes rather than assuming a set improves a character without cost. Nintendo’s gear guide describes these five themes:
| Gear theme | Focus stat increase per matching piece | Trade-off | Role it may suit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cannon | +2 Shooting | -2 to another stat | Emphasize shot speed and power. |
| Chain | +2 Passing | -2 to another stat | Emphasize pass speed and distance. |
| Muscle | +2 Strength | -2 to another stat | Emphasize tackling power and resistance. |
| Trick | +2 Technique | -2 to another stat | Emphasize shot and Hyper Strike accuracy. |
| Turbo | +2 Speed | -2 to another stat | Emphasize movement. |
Build around the role you want, then consider which reduced attribute your team can afford to lose. For example, adding a Shooting-focused piece may help a finisher, but the stat penalty can matter if it weakens an attribute that character needs. There is no universal best gear set without a defined role and team context.
Why older tier lists do not cover the full roster
Nintendo’s update history records six characters added after the original roster: Daisy and Shy Guy in version 1.1.0, released July 21, 2022; Pauline and Diddy Kong in version 1.2.0, released September 21, 2022; and Bowser Jr. and Birdo in version 1.3.0, released December 13, 2022. Version 1.3.0 also included game-balance adjustments. Nintendo later released version 1.3.2 on March 8, 2023, to fix issues. The dates and update details are listed on Nintendo Support’s update page.
That history explains why an older ten-character list cannot be extended to the expanded roster by simply reusing its tiers. A current ranking would need a documented assessment of the added characters or recent competitive evidence; the available sources do not provide a data-backed order for all 16.
