Marvel Rivals is a free-to-play, 6v6 team-based hero shooter in which players choose Marvel heroes, combine powers through Team-Up skills, fight over objectives, and use destructible environments to change the battlefield. It supports online PvP, online co-op, and cross-platform multiplayer. Before choosing where to play, check the platform list, note that account progression does not currently carry between platforms, and compare your PC or console setup with the published requirements.
What is Marvel Rivals?
Marvel Rivals is a multiplayer hero shooter built around coordinated 6v6 battles. Players select heroes with distinct powers and compete in objective-based matches. Its defining features include Team-Up skills—ability combinations involving heroes—and destructible environments that can alter routes, cover, or sightlines as a fight unfolds. Those systems make awareness of teammates and the changing map part of play, rather than reducing every match to an individual aim test. Steam’s store listing identifies online PvP, online co-op, and cross-platform multiplayer.
The official website promotes hero access with the statement, “ALL HEROES UNLOCKED AND FREE TO PLAY AT LAUNCH AND BEYOND!” That describes access to heroes; it should not be read as saying cosmetics, passes, or every in-game item are free. Steam lists in-app purchases.
How should a beginner approach a match?
Play around the objective and your team
Start by treating the objective as the reason to move and fight. Stay close enough to teammates to coordinate pressure and respond when a fight shifts, rather than chasing an isolated opponent across the map. Team-Up skills make hero combinations relevant, so notice when an ally’s ability creates an opportunity for yours.

Pay attention to the battlefield
Destructible terrain means a familiar piece of cover or route may not remain useful throughout a fight. Recheck sightlines and available paths after the environment changes. Use the game’s live Heroes, Team-Up, Maps, and season resources to learn current details; the roster, maps, balance, and seasonal systems can change with updates.
Don’t rely on a permanent “best” lineup
Hero balance and team compositions are update-sensitive. The available official information establishes the broad Team-Up concept, but does not support a timeless tier list, hero difficulty ranking, or claim about the strongest current composition. For current character and mode specifics, consult the game’s official resources and current patch information.

Which platforms can you play on?
The official Marvel Rivals website lists PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox Series X|S. The game’s launch FAQ, published December 6, 2024, also names Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, Epic Store, and Loading Bay as access paths. Storefront and platform availability can change, so check the official site for the current list.
According to that FAQ, players on different platforms can play together on the same server, but account data does not currently cross-progress between platforms. If you may switch devices and want to keep the same progression, check the live policy before committing to an account or platform: this is a changeable service feature, not a hardware limitation.

PC requirements: minimum and recommended
The official FAQ’s published specifications, dated December 6, 2024, are below. It recommends installing the game on an SSD for a better experience. Verify the live listing before downloading, since requirements and storage needs may be revised.

These are the FAQ’s listed tiers, not a promise of a particular frame rate or graphics quality on every PC. Check that your system meets the requirements and that you have enough free space before installing.

Console performance and 120 Hz displays
The official FAQ states: “PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, and Xbox Series X support stable 120 FPS (High Frame Rate) mode.” To use that mode, the FAQ says you need a display that supports both 120 Hz and HDMI 2.1, as well as the relevant console settings enabled. It does not name Xbox Series S in its 120 FPS support statement, so do not assume the same high-frame-rate mode applies to that model.

There is no evidence here that one platform is categorically best. Base the choice on the hardware you already own and the way you expect to play.

- Choose a console you own if you want to avoid checking PC components; for the documented 120 FPS mode, match a supported console with a compatible HDMI 2.1, 120 Hz display.
- Choose PC if your computer meets the published requirements and you prefer to play there. Compare its components with the minimum and recommended tiers rather than relying on a single GPU or CPU label.
- Consider progression before switching platforms. The December 6, 2024 FAQ says cross-platform play is supported but account data does not cross-progress between platforms; confirm the current policy if carrying progression matters to you.
Download and performance troubleshooting
Download or installation problems
- Check that your internet connection is stable, your device is compatible, and you have enough free storage for the current installation.
- Restart the game client and try again.
- If the problem remains, use the official support route linked from the Marvel Rivals website.
Crashes or damaged files
The official FAQ directs players experiencing crashes to its Integrity Check and Repair Guide, followed by further support steps if the issue persists. Use the repair instructions for your client rather than deleting files or changing settings at random.
Stuttering on a PC that meets requirements
- Install the latest graphics driver for your GPU.
- Set Marvel Rivals to high-performance mode in Windows graphics settings.
- If performance remains poor, reduce in-game settings and see whether that improves stability.
These are official troubleshooting suggestions, not guaranteed fixes; performance can depend on the system and the specific problem.
