Marvel Rivals Accessories vs. Skins: What Changes in Game

By VGSources Team 10 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Accessories and skins are separate cosmetic systems in Marvel Rivals. The game calls skins Costumes: they change a hero’s outfit and overall appearance. Accessories are a different, hero-specific cosmetic category introduced in Season 3. Neither category is documented as changing a hero’s abilities or stats. The developer’s stated policy is that paid cosmetics provide “only visual changes, with no stat bonuses or pay-to-win elements.”

So, if you are asking, “Do accessories or skins change gameplay, or just how a hero looks?” the evidence-supported answer is: they change presentation, not combat power. What you can earn, buy, equip, or customize depends on the hero, patch, event, and current Shop inventory.

Accessories and Costumes are different item types

Marvel Rivals uses Costumes as its official term for hero skins. Players and community guides commonly say “skins,” but the in-game category is Costumes. Accessories are not another name for Costumes; they are a separate cosmetic category tied to particular heroes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The distinction matters because the two systems have different documented acquisition and customization features. A Costume changes the hero’s main visual design. An Accessory is an additional hero-specific cosmetic item introduced with Season 3. The official Season 3 notes describe Accessories as items earned and redeemed through Accessory Points, rather than as a replacement name for Costumes.

Question Accessories Costumes (skins)
What is the item? A separate cosmetic item associated with a particular hero. A hero appearance, called a Costume by the game.
What changes? Cosmetic presentation. The cited patch notes do not describe an ability or stat change. The hero’s visual appearance; the developer classifies cosmetics as visual-only.
Documented acquisition Season 3: earn Accessory Points in matches and redeem them in the Shop for hero-specific accessories. Costumes can appear in store bundles, Battle Pass content, events, or achievements; exact offers and availability vary.
Customization No complete current accessory-customization guide is established in the cited official notes. Official notes document color options, chromas, and, in some cases, other visual customization.
Gameplay stats No stat or pay-to-win benefit is stated in the official materials reviewed. The same cosmetic-only policy applies.

The table describes the systems at a category level, not a permanent catalog. Individual items can rotate out, return, or be offered only during a particular event. A patch note announcing an item does not prove that the item is obtainable in the Shop today.

What an Accessory changes

An Accessory changes how a specific hero is presented. The official description is deliberately broad: Season 3 patch notes say players can “earn Accessory Points in matches and redeem them in the Shop for hero-specific accessories.” That wording establishes three practical limits:

  • Accessories are hero-specific. Do not assume an Accessory earned for one hero can be equipped by the entire roster.
  • There is an earn-and-redeem route. Accessory Points come from playing matches, and the Shop is where the notes say they are redeemed.
  • The feature is cosmetic. The notes introduce the item category without describing damage, health, cooldown, movement, or other combat changes.

The official Season 3 notes were published on July 3, 2025. They describe the feature when it was introduced, not a promise that every later season uses identical point rewards, prices, item pools, or Shop rules. If the current game client shows a different requirement or an item is absent, use the client’s current listing rather than treating the launch description as an evergreen schedule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because the cited notes do not provide a complete accessory inventory or a universal equip procedure, it would be misleading to list every possible Accessory or claim that all heroes have the same choices. Open the relevant hero and the current Shop listing to see which hero-specific options are actually available on your account.

What a Costume (skin) changes

A Costume changes the hero’s visible appearance. That can include the outfit, colors, materials, silhouette details, themed visual elements, and other presentation work supplied for that Costume. The game’s official monetization statement does not describe Costumes as alternate abilities or loadouts; it places paid cosmetics in the visual-only category.

  • ANTI-STATIC: great for cleaning and wiping down your gaming gear and electronics leaving behind no visible residue
  • COMPACT RESEALABLE PACKAGE: store your pack of Windex Gaming Wipes anywhere in your home for whenever a quick and easy wipedown is needed

Costumes are not limited to one acquisition channel. The developer’s monetization overview says cosmetics can be associated with store purchases, the Battle Pass, events, and achievements. That is a description of the available kinds of content, not a guarantee that every Costume is always obtainable through all of those routes. A particular Costume may be tied to one offer, one event, or one period of availability.

Customization has expanded beyond a single fixed appearance. The April 2025 update notes explain that, after purchasing a Costume, players can switch its color options in the Costumes interface. Later patch notes also list additional costume chromas and visual effects. These are still presentation changes: a color variant or effect does not become a separate combat build simply because it is selectable in the interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Color options and chromas

The April 2025 notes are the clearest documented example of Costume customization. They describe color options that can be switched from the Costumes interface after purchase. Later updates use the term “chromas” for additional visual variants. Availability can differ by Costume, so do not infer that every Costume has the same number of colors or that every color option is sold separately.

Visual effects are not ability upgrades

Recent patch notes also list Ultimate Ability VFX alongside costume-related content. “VFX” means visual effects; it does not, by itself, indicate a stronger Ultimate, a larger area, extra damage, or a shorter cooldown. The official policy statement remains the relevant evidence for gameplay impact: cosmetics are intended to provide visual changes without stat bonuses or pay-to-win elements.

Do Accessories or Costumes affect gameplay?

Officially, they are cosmetic-only. In its December 5, 2024 monetization statement, the Marvel Rivals team wrote: “We will be charging for cosmetics that will provide only visual changes, with no stat bonuses or pay-to-win elements.” Read the full statement in the Marvel Rivals Dev Talk Vol.07 | Monetization.

That statement supports the practical conclusion that buying or unlocking a Costume or Accessory should not improve a hero’s health, damage, healing, armor, movement statistics, cooldowns, or other numerical combat attributes. The Season 3 Accessory description likewise gives an earn-and-redeem system, not a gameplay perk system.

There is an important scope qualification: the monetization post is a dated policy statement, and the cited official materials do not provide a technical checklist for every visual asset. They do not explicitly establish claims about identical hitboxes, visibility in every map, competitive readability, animation timing, or how every future Costume will look in every situation. Do not turn “visual-only” into unsupported guarantees about those implementation details. The evidence supports no stat bonuses or pay-to-win elements; it does not document every rendering or perception consequence.

What this means in a match

  • Your selected Costume does not give the hero a different ability kit.
  • An Accessory does not add a new attack, passive, health pool, or resource.
  • Color options and chromas change appearance rather than the underlying hero’s numbers.
  • Ultimate Ability VFX listed in update notes are visual effects, not evidence of stronger Ultimate performance.

If you notice a balance change after equipping a cosmetic, compare the hero’s current patch notes and balance changes first. A gameplay update can alter a hero independently of the cosmetic system; the presence of a new Costume or Accessory is not evidence that the cosmetic caused the change.

How to earn and redeem Accessories

The documented Season 3 path is short, but the exact current reward values and inventory are not fixed by that introductory note:

  1. Play matches. Season 3 notes say Accessory Points are earned in matches. The note does not establish one universal number of points per match or a permanent daily schedule.
  2. Open the Shop. The same notes identify the Shop as the redemption location.
  3. Check the hero association. Confirm that the Accessory is for the hero you intend to use. Hero-specific means the item should not be treated as a roster-wide cosmetic.
  4. Review the current requirement. Use the live Shop entry for the points cost, eligibility, and any event or time limit shown by the game client.
  5. Redeem only after checking availability. A Season 3 announcement describes the feature’s operation at introduction; it does not guarantee that every listed Accessory remains in rotation.

The official source for the feature is the Season 3 patch notes, published July 3, 2025. If the client’s current wording differs, the current client and latest official update should control your decision.

How Costume customization works

Costume customization is documented separately from Accessory redemption. The April 2025 update says that, after purchasing a Costume, players can switch its color options in the Costumes interface. In practical terms, the documented sequence is:

  1. Own the Costume. The color-switching feature is described as available after purchase, so a color option is not evidence that the base Costume is free or automatically unlocked.
  2. Open the Costumes interface. This is the interface named in the April 2025 notes.
  3. Select an available color option. The options shown depend on the Costume and the current game version.
  4. Apply the visual variant. The change affects the Costume’s presentation, not the hero’s combat statistics.

The April 2025 notes are available at Marvel Rivals’ April 2025 patch page. Later patch notes refer to more chromas and effects, so the interface may expose more choices than the original color-option feature. Do not assume that a chroma is available for every Costume or that a particular effect can be transferred between heroes.

Availability changes with patches and events

Cosmetic information in patch notes is time-sensitive. The January 14, 2026 Season 6 notes still listed new Accessories, showing that the category continued to receive content after its Season 3 introduction. The Season 6 patch notes do not establish a complete current catalog, permanent ownership rules, or a universal price for every Accessory.

September 2026 notes continued to list store customization offerings, including costumes, chromas, and Ultimate Ability VFX, while also describing time-limited availability. The September 2026 patch notes are therefore useful evidence that these systems remained active, not proof that a named offer is still in the Shop on the day you read this.

A reliable availability check

  • Look in the live Shop rather than relying on an old screenshot or launch article.
  • Read the item’s hero name and category; an Accessory is not automatically a Costume and vice versa.
  • Check whether the listing shows an end date, event condition, rotation, or limited-time label.
  • For a Costume, open the Costumes interface to see whether chromas or color options are available for that specific purchase.
  • When an item is missing, check the latest official patch or event notice before assuming it was removed permanently.

Common mistakes when comparing them

Mistake: treating “skin” and “Accessory” as synonyms

“Skin” is common player language, but the game’s label is Costume. Accessories are a separate category. Using the terms interchangeably can lead you to the wrong Shop tab or make you expect a Costume-style full outfit when the listing is for a hero-specific Accessory.

Mistake: assuming every hero can use every Accessory

The Season 3 notes explicitly describe hero-specific accessories. Always verify the associated hero before spending Accessory Points or expecting the item to appear in another hero’s customization menu.

Mistake: reading visual effects as performance buffs

A chroma, color option, or Ultimate VFX can make an ability look different. Nothing in the cited notes says it increases damage, changes cooldowns, or grants a new effect in the gameplay sense. The developer’s published policy says paid cosmetics have no stat bonuses or pay-to-win elements.

Mistake: treating an old price or event window as current

Patch notes are dated snapshots. A 2025 introduction, a 2026 seasonal note, or a September 2026 store announcement cannot guarantee today’s listing, point cost, or remaining time. Use the live client for current availability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: assuming “visual-only” answers every competitive-readability question

The official policy addresses stats and pay-to-win elements. It does not publish a technical guarantee about identical hitboxes, visibility, animation readability, or every camera interaction for every Costume. Keep those questions separate from the documented no-stat policy.

Accessories vs. Costumes: which should you choose?

There is no gameplay-power choice to optimize. Choose based on the presentation you want and the acquisition route that fits your account:

  • Choose an Accessory if you want a hero-specific cosmetic and are willing to earn Accessory Points through matches before redeeming in the Shop.
  • Choose a Costume if you want the broadest change to a hero’s appearance or want documented color, chroma, or effect customization where the specific Costume supports it.
  • Check the listing first if your priority is a particular hero, color, or event. The current inventory is more authoritative than an old patch announcement.
  • Ignore combat-stat comparisons because the official policy does not assign these cosmetics stat bonuses or pay-to-win advantages.

For collectors, the systems can complement each other: a Costume can define the hero’s main look while a hero-specific Accessory adds another visual element. Whether both can be used together, and which combinations are offered, should be verified in the current interface rather than assumed from the category names.

Bottom line on what changes in game

Marvel Rivals Accessories and Costumes change cosmetic presentation, not a hero’s documented combat power. Costumes—what players usually call skins—alter the hero’s appearance and may offer colors, chromas, or visual effects. Accessories are a separate, hero-specific category with a documented Season 3 earn-and-redeem path using Accessory Points and the Shop. The developer’s monetization statement says paid cosmetics provide visual changes only, with no stat bonuses or pay-to-win elements. Check the live Shop and current patch notes for which items, variants, and time-limited offers are actually available.
