Marvel Rivals Lagging in Multiplayer on PC? Diagnose and Fix It

Marvel Rivals lag can be network latency or local FPS stutter. This guide shows how to tell the difference and apply the shortest reliable fix on PC.

There is no single universal fix for Marvel Rivals lag. First determine whether you have network lag (ping spikes, packet loss and rubber-banding) or performance lag (low FPS, frame-time spikes and freezes). Use the matching steps below before buying a VPN, “game booster” or new hardware.

Identify the type of lag

What you notice Most likely cause First step
Ping or an MS indicator jumps Latency, packet loss or route congestion Select the lowest-latency region and test Ethernet
Your character snaps backward or teleports Packet loss, jitter or a server route problem Run Marvel Rivals’ network diagnostic
Shots register late while FPS is steady Network or server issue Compare another region and another match
FPS falls during large fights GPU, CPU, RAM or graphics settings Lower effects and verify high-performance GPU mode
Brief freezes after loading or during effects Shader compilation or memory pressure Check RAM/VRAM use and test shader options
The screen hitches while ping stays stable Local frame-time or background-process problem Check utilization, drivers and overlays
Everyone complains in the same match Possible server or region issue Requeue later and report it if it continues

A fast broadband package does not guarantee low in-match latency. Distance to the selected region, Wi-Fi interference, congestion, packet loss and ISP routing can all matter.

Fast checks that take two minutes

  1. Quit Marvel Rivals and restart the PC.
  2. Restart the modem/router if other online services are unstable.
  3. Pause downloads, cloud synchronization, streams, recording and unnecessary browser tabs.
  4. Play one or two matches over Ethernet if possible.
  5. In matchmaking, compare the displayed latency values and choose the lowest stable region. Marvel Rivals uses one login server, but lets players choose a matchmaking server; labels and available regions can change with updates. See the official FAQ.
  6. Watch the FPS counter when the problem occurs. A falling FPS points to local performance; a stable FPS with rising ping points to networking.

Fix high ping, packet loss and rubber-banding

Test the lowest-latency region

Select the region with the lowest stable latency, not simply the label that sounds geographically closest. A party member forcing a distant region can make a match feel poor for everyone nearby. If every region suddenly reports unusually high values, wait and retest rather than repeatedly changing graphics settings.

Compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi

Use a wired connection for a few matches. If Ethernet resolves the problem, investigate Wi-Fi signal strength, channel congestion, interference and router placement. If it does not, compare another region and another online game; a route-specific or game-side issue becomes more likely. Faster download speed alone is not a latency solution.

  • ping 1.1.1.1 -t observes intermittent spikes; stop with Ctrl+C.
  • ipconfig /flushdns clears the local DNS cache. It may help name-resolution problems but normally does not lower latency inside a match.
  • tracert <server-or-hostname> shows a route, but does not prove where packet loss occurs because routers may deprioritize or block traceroute traffic.

Fix FPS drops and frame-time stutter

Assign the game to Windows High performance

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose System → Display → Graphics.
  3. Add Marvel Rivals if it is not listed, then browse to the game’s installation directory.
  4. Select the actual Marvel Rivals executable, open Options, choose High performance and save.
  5. Restart the game.

The official instructions refer to Marvel.exe, but launchers and builds can show a different filename. Select the executable that your installation actually uses. Details are in the publisher’s PC requirements and optimization guide.

Clean-install the GPU driver

Download the current driver directly from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel and select the installer’s clean-install option where available. Restart afterward. If stutter began immediately after a driver update, testing a rollback is a diagnostic fallback, not a guaranteed cure. Avoid stacking multiple driver-cleaning utilities.

Lower settings that create fight-time spikes

  • Shadows
  • Effects quality
  • Reflections
  • Global illumination
  • Volumetric effects
  • View distance
  • Texture quality when VRAM is nearly full

Monitor GPU utilization, VRAM, system RAM, CPU usage per core and frame-time consistency. A capped, stable frame rate can feel smoother than a higher but erratic average. Close browser video, cloud-sync clients, recording software, hardware-monitoring and chat overlays, extra launchers, RGB utilities and active antivirus scans. The Epic Games FAQ also recommends closing background applications that consume GPU memory.

Shader compilation and memory pressure

Switch Shader Compilation Mode

Marvel Rivals published an experimental Switch Shader Compilation Mode to reduce memory use and address some stutter and crash cases. The announcement focuses on systems with 16 GB RAM or less and warns that systems with six or fewer CPU threads may stutter more when the mode is combined with AMD FSR3 Frame Generation. Availability and menu placement can vary by build. Change one option at a time and revert it if performance worsens. Read the shader-compilation announcement.

The publisher recommends an SSD for a better experience. Meeting minimum specifications does not promise a particular FPS or stutter-free multiplayer. A 16 GB system can run short of headroom when the game, browser and overlays compete for RAM, and a technically adequate GPU can still struggle if texture settings exhaust VRAM. Requirements are listed in the official requirements article.

Firewall, antivirus and launcher checks

For disconnects or failed connections, allow the Marvel Rivals executable through Windows Firewall on the networks you actually use. Check whether antivirus or controlled-folder protection is blocking it; if necessary, perform a brief test with protection adjusted, then restore it and add a narrowly scoped allowlist entry. The official troubleshooting page identifies Marvel-Win64-Shipping.exe as a file to check: Marvel Rivals troubleshooting.

On Steam, use the platform’s built-in support and file-management options before reinstalling the whole game. Steam’s technical support route is available here, and the game listing is Marvel Rivals on Steam.

Special cases worth testing

  • Post-update settings reset: Recheck graphics settings after patches; higher settings can mimic a network problem.
  • Laptop or hybrid graphics: Confirm the discrete GPU is selected in Windows and, if needed, in the GPU vendor’s application profile.
  • VPN: It can occasionally improve a bad ISP route, but can also add latency, jitter and packet loss. Treat it as a temporary route experiment, not a default fix.
  • Frame generation: It can raise displayed FPS while adding latency or artifacts. Do not use it to conceal an unstable base frame rate.
  • Peripherals: If unusual input behavior accompanies stutter, disconnect specialized pedals, gearboxes or joysticks; the publisher notes compatibility issues with some such controllers at this support page.

When the problem is probably server-side

Stop changing local graphics settings when several players report the same lag, only one region is affected, other games remain stable, or the network diagnostic shows a clean local connection while matches remain unstable. Try a reasonable alternate region, restart after a patch, and test again later. Do not call it an outage without current official confirmation.

For support, record the date and time, region, platform, mode, match, ping/FPS behavior, whether Ethernet changed it and what you already tested. Submit the CapturePro output and use the current official support route.

Final checklist

  • Is the symptom ping/packet loss or FPS/frame-time?
  • Did you test Ethernet?
  • Is the lowest-latency region selected?
  • Did you clean-install or appropriately test the GPU driver?
  • Is Windows set to High performance for the actual game executable?
  • Did you close background GPU/RAM users and overlays?
  • Did you test shader or performance options one at a time?
  • Did you check requirements, RAM, VRAM and SSD installation?
  • Did you run CapturePro.exe when the issue was network-related?
  • Did you submit a support report instead of repeatedly changing unrelated settings?
