Although each player selects four characters, a match opens with only the first two available. The remaining two enter after a qualifying stage break or when you lose a round, so you can learn the game in layers rather than memorizing an entire roster at once.
This guide explains the opening match structure, the controls that matter first, how assists and switches create team synergy, and a practical offline training sequence. MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls launched on PS5 and PC on August 6, 2026; platform requirements and edition details are covered below.

What kind of fighting game is MARVEL Tōkon?
MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a four-character team fighter. You choose four characters before the match, but both sides begin with only their first two characters active. The third and fourth characters become available when you trigger one of the game’s stage-transition conditions or after you lose a round. This staged arrival is important: you do not need to manage four characters from the first second of a fight.

Your opening goal is therefore not to keep four separate life totals healthy; it is to control space, avoid unnecessary damage, and use teammates to create safe opportunities. Director and lead battle designer Kazutoshi Sekine described the design this way: “This means you don’t have to master the whole roster to be effective, and in that sense, can approach the game like a more traditional fighter if you choose.” Read the full interview on PlayStation.Blog.

How the extra characters enter
The official FAQ and PlayStation’s game page list several ways to cause the stage break that brings in later teammates:
- Land certain attacks or throws.
- Use selected Skill attacks that qualify for a transition.
- Connect a successful light-route Link Attack near the screen edge, producing a transition or wall splat.
- Lose a round; the later characters are then unlocked for the next stage of the match.
Because the exact qualifying attacks vary by character and situation, treat the conditions as a reason to explore your character’s move list rather than as a combo requirement you must memorize immediately.
For a complete description of the team rules, see the official MARVEL Tōkon FAQ.

A reliable beginner route is to add one mechanic at a time. Start with a character you enjoy controlling, learn a small attack sequence, then layer in defense, assists, and switching. This keeps your practice measurable and prevents the four-character format from becoming overwhelming.
1. Choose a lead you actually want to play
Try several characters in Startup Battle, Character Guides, or Training Mode, then settle on one lead for your first sessions. The official beginner guide recommends choosing a character you like before building habits around them. Comfort with movement, attack timing, and input style matters more at this stage than a supposed “best” choice.
A PlayStation.Blog hands-on preview from 2025 described Captain America as a versatile all-rounder and an approachable entry point. That was a preview observation, not a current tier list or a guarantee that he is the strongest beginner character. No reviewed official source establishes a universally best team or ranking, so choose based on how the character feels in your hands.
2. Start with Quick Skills
Quick Skills use a single button, making them the easiest way to add special moves while you are still learning movement and defense. Command Inputs use traditional motion inputs. The official beginner guide says Command Inputs produce slightly higher damage and generate more Skill Gauge, but they also demand more execution.

3. Learn one basic attack route
In Training Mode, find a short sequence that you can perform consistently: an opening attack, a follow-up, and a Skill or teammate assist. The purpose is not to discover an objectively optimal combo. You are learning what reaches the opponent, where the sequence ends, and whether you have time to defend afterward.
Once the route works, use the mode’s command-input, frame-data, and damage displays to inspect it. Add a scenario preset or a bot behavior only when you have a specific question, such as whether the final hit is safe or whether an assist keeps the opponent close enough for a follow-up.
4. Learn standing and crouching Guard
Standing Guard is performed by holding back. Crouching Guard uses down-back. Practice changing between them while the training bot attacks, because defense is not a pause between combos; it is the skill that lets you survive long enough to use your team.
Two defensive actions deserve early attention:
- Assemble Counter: press Square + Cross while you are not guarding.
- Crossover: press Square + Cross while guarding; this calls a teammate to interrupt the opponent.
The beginner guide says both can be practiced in Startup Battle. Button names can differ if you customize the control layout, so confirm your assignments in the controls menu before drilling them.
5. Add an assist before direct switching
Press Cross to call an Assemble Assist. Directional input selects which teammate responds. An assist can interrupt an opponent’s approach, extend your attack sequence, or give you time to reposition without immediately handing control to another character.
PlayStation’s beginner guide specifically recommends becoming comfortable with assists before learning direct switching. That order helps you understand what each teammate contributes while you remain in control of your lead.
6. Learn the assist-to-switch prompt
Direction plus L2 switches characters directly. After an assist, the game briefly displays a “Switch?” prompt; pressing L2 during that window performs a seamless switch. Begin by calling one assist and watching for the prompt rather than trying to switch during every attack. Once the timing is familiar, experiment with switching after an assist has created space or extended your pressure.

PlayStation’s Beginner’s Guide to MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls explains these actions and the recommended order for learning them.
How team synergy works for beginners
“Synergy” in Tōkon does not require a formal class system or a pre-approved team recipe. It means deciding how your lead and teammates help each other during the portions of the match when they are available.
Pick a lead first, then evaluate teammates
Use four practical questions when assembling a team:
- Which character do you most want to control?
- Does that character’s input style feel comfortable with your chosen control layout?
- Which teammate assist creates an opening, extends pressure, or gives you room to reset?
- Do you want to practice switching immediately, or stay with the lead while you learn fundamentals?
These are useful decision axes, not official team roles or a competitive ranking. The documented sources do not establish a strongest beginner team, matchup chart, or tier list, so be wary of advice that presents one lineup as universally correct.
Use assists to create decisions, not to fill every gap
An assist should have a job. You might call one to make an approach safer, to keep an opponent from escaping an attack route, or to cover your retreat. Start with one teammate and one purpose. If you call every assist on cooldown without watching the opponent’s response, you will learn the button but not the decision.
Switch when control changes are useful
A direct switch changes the character you control; it does not merely add another hit. Switching after an assist can preserve momentum, put a character with a better position on point, or let your original lead recover from an awkward situation. Practice the timing in a quiet setting first, then use it in local matches where you can concentrate on why you switched.
Understand the staged roster
Your fourth-character selection is part of the match plan even though that character is unavailable at the opening bell. Consider which later teammate you would want after a stage transition or a lost round, but do not postpone learning your lead while trying to optimize all four choices. Sekine’s explanation supports a traditional-fighter approach: one well-understood character can carry your early learning while the wider team develops gradually.

- Bot settings: make the practice opponent defend, attack, or behave in a chosen way.
- Record and replay: record a bot action and repeat it so you can practice a response.
These tools support a progression; they do not tell you which route is automatically best. Use the display that answers the question you have.
A first Training Mode checklist
- Perform your lead’s movement and basic attacks until the inputs feel repeatable.
- Record a short attack route and confirm where it ends.
- Repeat the route with a Quick Skill, then inspect the damage and ending position.
- Try the same sequence with one chosen assist.
- Set the bot to attack and practice standing Guard, crouching Guard, and changing between them.
- Practice Assemble Counter while you are free to act and Crossover while guarding.
- Call the assist, watch for “Switch?”, and press L2 during the prompt.
- Only after these steps, test a scenario preset or a recorded bot attack that represents a problem you encountered.

A practical six-session practice plan
Use this as a flexible sequence rather than a deadline. Stay on a session until you can perform its task without concentrating on every individual button.
Session 1: movement and one lead
- Try several characters, then choose one lead.
- Confirm your control layout.
- Practice walking, guarding, jumping, basic attacks, and one Quick Skill.
Session 2: a repeatable route
- Build a short attack sequence from a normal attack into a Skill.
- Use command-input display to correct missed motions.
- Check damage and ending position, but prioritize consistency over length.
Session 3: defense
- Have the bot attack while you hold standing Guard.
- Add crouching Guard and practice switching between the two.
- Drill Assemble Counter outside guard and Crossover from guard.
Session 4: one assist
- Choose one teammate and learn the direction needed to call that assist.
- Test whether it creates space, extends your route, or interrupts an approach.
- Do not add every teammate until you understand this assist’s purpose.
Session 5: switching
- Call the assist and watch for the “Switch?” prompt.
- Press L2 during the prompt, then repeat from both sides of the screen.
- Try a direct Direction + L2 switch separately so you know the difference.
Session 6: apply the layer
- Play local Versus, Episode Mode, or Arcadia Rumble offline.
- Set one goal, such as blocking correctly or using an assist with purpose.
- Return to Training Mode after a match only for the specific situation that caused trouble.
When these actions feel familiar, begin exploring the conditions that unlock your third and fourth characters. You will learn more from testing one transition route than from trying to memorize every team interaction at once.

Common beginner problems and fixes
“I picked four characters and feel lost immediately.”
Remember that only your first two are available at the start. Focus on the lead, then learn one assist from the second character. The later two are unlocked through a stage break or a lost round.
“My motion inputs fail, so I cannot use Skills.”
Switch to Quick Skills while you learn the rest of the system. Use the command-input display in Training Mode, then add one motion input after the single-button version is reliable.
“I attack constantly and still lose.”
Spend a session on standing Guard, crouching Guard, Assemble Counter, and Crossover. Defense gives you a chance to recognize an opponent’s approach instead of trying to win every exchange with another attack.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“I press Cross, but my assist does not do what I expected.”
Directional input chooses the teammate. Practice each direction separately and watch the assist’s position, timing, and effect before combining it with a route.
“The switch prompt disappears before I can use it.”
Call the assist in Training Mode, watch for “Switch?”, and press L2 during that short window. Repeat from both sides and without an attack sequence until the timing is automatic.
“I am unsure which team is objectively best.”
There is no official beginner tier list or strongest team established in the documented material. Choose a lead you enjoy, then select teammates whose assists solve a problem you are actually encountering.
When to move online
Online matches are most useful after you can perform your basic route, block deliberately, call one assist, and recognize the switch prompt. You do not need perfect combos, but you should be able to tell whether a mistake came from an input, a defensive choice, or a risky switch. That diagnosis makes each match a learning exercise rather than a sequence of unexplained losses.
On PS5, online gameplay requires an internet connection and PlayStation Plus. On PC, it requires internet and a PlayStation account. If you do not have those requirements, the offline modes provide enough tools to build fundamentals first.
The simplest way to start today
Choose one lead character, run Startup Battle or a Character Guide, and spend the next Training Mode session on three things: one basic attack route, one assist call, and standing and crouching Guard. Then practice the assist-to-switch prompt and test the same actions in local Versus or an offline mode. This sequence teaches the mechanics that make the four-character format distinctive without asking you to master the entire roster before your first real match.
