You do not need to master four characters before your first match in MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls. Start with one character, learn the basic attacks and guard, then add assists and switches as you get comfortable. At launch, only your first two selected teammates are available at the start of a match; the other two join after a qualifying break or when you lose a round.
Start with one character and learn the team controls in stages
The game’s team system is designed to let you focus on a lead character while teammates enter through assists and switches. Arc System Works Game Director and Lead Battle Designer Kazuto Sekine described the approach this way: “You only need to learn to play as one character in order to enjoy the game, and you can still see your other teammates coming in and out of the battlefield.” The August 2025 PlayStation interview explains the design intent; for launch-specific team access, use the later FAQ details below.

For a first session, follow this order:
- Choose a character you enjoy and check the character-select “Ease of Use” rating. More stars indicate an easier character to use.
- Play Startup Battle. Its Basics section introduces individual actions; its Assemble section teaches team actions. If you already know fighting-game fundamentals, you can go straight to Assemble.
- Practice the three simple Link Attack strings and basic guard.
- Call assists by direction, then try switching when the “Switch?” prompt appears.
PlayStation’s July 20, 2026 beginner guide names Captain America, Ms. Marvel, and Wolverine as beginner-friendly choices; Iron Man and Spider-Man as relatively easy; and Storm and Danger as more advanced. These are onboarding suggestions, not a competitive ranking. The guide also suggests mixing close and long range—Wolverine with Iron Man is its example—but recommends starting with characters you like.

Link Attacks let you chain attacks into a stronger action. The official beginner guide gives these simple strings:

#1 Best Overall
- Assemble your team of legendary Marvel characters in the ultimate 4v4 tag team fighter from PlayStation Studios, Arc System Works and Marvel Games.
- Experiment with team compositions to discover new combos, synergies, and strategies. Blast your way through dynamic stages based on iconic Marvel Universe locales, some featuring interactive stage transitions.
- Fighting is both immersive and intuitive, with a range of unique move sets, combos, and strategies to master. Adjustable controls, both traditional and quick inputs, plus easy chain combos make diving right in a breeze.
- Face off against a friend locally or join the fray with up to 64 players in the online lobby, including standard VS modes. Plus, dive deep on each team with the single player Episode Mode to learn more about team dynamics and lore.
| Input | What it leads to |
|---|---|
| L → L → L → L | A Skill; can also trigger a Break, such as a stage transition. |
| M → M → M | A Super Skill. |
| H → H → H | An Ultimate Skill. |
After these feel familiar, try the guide’s longer practice route: L → M → H → Skill → Assemble Rush → Follow-up Attack. Treat it as a learning route, not a guaranteed optimal combo for every character or game update.
Guard first, then add the two defensive team actions
Hold back (←) to stand guard or down-back (↙) to crouch and guard. Startup Battle teaches two additional defensive options:
- Assemble Counter: Press □ + × while not guarding. Your character backsteps and automatically counters if the opponent hits during the maneuver.
- Crossover: Press □ + × while guarding. A teammate interrupts the opponent and creates an opening.
Call assists and switch teammates
The official beginner guide’s controls use × to call an Assemble Assist. The direction chooses the teammate. You can switch directly with a direction plus L2, or tag in the teammate who just assisted by pressing L2 while the brief “Switch?” prompt is visible.
| Action | Input |
|---|---|
| Call an Assemble Assist | × |
| Call teammate two | Neutral or → + × |
| Call teammate three | ↓ + × |
| Call teammate four | ← + × |
| Switch directly to a teammate | That teammate’s direction + L2 |
| Switch after an assist | Press L2 while “Switch?” is displayed |
Get comfortable calling each assist before focusing on direct switches. In Training Mode or a low-pressure match, press × with each direction and note which teammate responds. Then call an assist and press L2 as soon as the prompt appears. The official guide describes the prompt window as brief but does not give a frame count.

Why only two teammates are available at the start
Although you select a four-character team, the match begins with the first two selected characters available. The official FAQ, updated August 18, 2026, says the remaining teammates become available after a qualifying Break or after you lose a round. A Break can result from certain attacks or throws, selected Skills, or a successful light-route Link Attack near the screen edge that triggers a stage transition or wall splat. See the official FAQ for the launch rules.
This is why practicing the light Link Attack route and learning how Breaks happen helps with team play: it teaches you how the rest of your selected lineup enters the match.
Quick Skills or Command Inputs?
Skills have two input options. Quick Skills execute with one button and are recommended for newcomers learning the fundamentals. Command Inputs, also called motion inputs, deal slightly more damage and generate more Skill Gauge, according to the official beginner guide. You can remap the Quick Skill button in control settings.
Begin with Quick Skills so you can concentrate on recognizing openings and using your team. Add motion inputs once those fundamentals feel consistent and you want their additional damage and gauge generation.

Use Training Mode to build a repeatable practice routine
Training Mode can display command inputs, frame data, and damage. It also offers scenario presets, bot settings, and the ability to record and replay a bot. The FAQ lists local two-player training and online training through a Room Match as additional options. These tools make it easier to practice a specific action; they do not establish that a particular route is optimal.
- Choose one character and practice basic actions plus the L, M, and H Link Attack strings.
- Practice standing and crouching guard, then try Assemble Counter and Crossover.
- Call each teammate with the assist directions and practice the assist-to-switch prompt.
- Try the longer team route and learn which actions cause a Break in your match.
For access context, the FAQ lists Episode Mode, local Versus, Training Mode, All-Star Arena, Battle Guides, and Character Guides among the game’s content. Online play requires an internet connection and platform account; PS5 online play also requires PlayStation Plus, while PC online modes require a PlayStation account.
Choose a team for comfort and range, not an unsupported “best” ranking
The official beginner guide does not provide a tier list, and the reviewed official sources do not establish a strongest team or assist pairing. For a first lineup, consider these practical questions instead:
- Range coverage: Do you want a close-range character alongside someone who can use ranged projectiles? The official guide’s example is Wolverine and Iron Man.
- Ease of use: Use the character-select rating and official beginner suggestions as a starting point, not as a measure of competitive strength.
- Interest and familiarity: You will get more practice with characters you want to play.
- Team role: The official characters and combat guide describes character kits and ranges, which can help you decide who to lead with and which teammate’s assist you want to call.
Game availability and controller context
