Start with Captain America, Ms. Marvel, Wolverine, Iron Man, or Spider-Man if you want the official guide’s more approachable examples. Pick Quick Skills while you are learning inputs, then add motion commands when you want their stated damage and Skill Gauge benefits.
Your team contains four characters, but only the first two are available at the opening of a match. Breaks and lost rounds bring the other members into play, so learning when to trigger and defend against a Break is as important as memorizing attacks.

How do I start playing Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls?
Use this first-session route:
- Open Startup Battle and complete Basics as Captain America.
- Complete Assemble to learn team actions and cooperative attacks.
- Choose one character using the Ease of Use stars, but let personal preference decide between similarly accessible heroes.
- In Training Mode, repeat one Link Attack, test Guard, and practice either Assemble Counter or Crossover.
- Play a few local or offline matches before adding more characters or studying advanced routes.
The official beginner guide was published on July 20, 2026, ahead of that month’s Open Beta. Its explanations of controls and combat remain useful, while the beta schedule itself is historical. The current FAQ lists Episode Mode and Training Mode as offline content. The US PlayStation Store lists August 6, 2026 as the PS5 release date; the launch announcement gives August 7 for Australia, Japan, New Zealand, and Korea. Those are the published regional dates, not a guarantee about the status of a particular territory’s storefront.

Which character should I pick first?
At character select, the Ease of Use stars are the clearest built-in signal: more stars indicate a character that is easier to use, according to the official guide. They are a starting aid rather than a ranking of strength.
Approachable first choices
- Captain America: the hero used to teach the Basics section, making him a natural first character for learning the game’s individual actions.
- Ms. Marvel: one of the guide’s beginner-friendly examples.
- Wolverine: a direct, aggressive melee option that makes the close-range game easy to understand.
- Iron Man: described as relatively easy to learn and useful for players who prefer attacking from farther away.
- Spider-Man: also described as relatively easy to learn.
Characters to save for later if you want the gentlest start
The guide presents Storm and Danger as more advanced. That does not mean you should avoid them if they are the reason you want to play; it means you may need more time in Training Mode before their actions feel natural.
Preference matters more than a supposed best pick
Learning one favorite character thoroughly is more valuable than switching constantly to chase a theoretical optimum. Sekine’s advice is to start with the hero you like most and expand your roster gradually. The guide’s example team pairs Wolverine’s aggressive melee style with Iron Man’s powerful ranged attacks, giving the team two contrasting ranges. Treat that as a role-contrast example, not an objectively strongest team. Your best first team is the one whose characters you are willing to practice.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat does Startup Battle teach?
Startup Battle is divided into two useful stages. New fighting-game players should take both in order; experienced players can skip Basics and go straight to Assemble.
Basics: learn one character
Basics teaches the actions of an individual character, including the game’s three regular attack strengths:
| Button | Attack | What to learn first |
|---|---|---|
| □ | Light | Fastest basic attack and the starting point for the simplest Link Attack. |
| △ | Medium | A stronger normal used in its own Link Attack route. |
| ○ | Heavy | The heaviest normal and the start of the Heavy route. |
The tutorial also introduces combos, Skills, and character-specific actions. Do not leave Basics until you can identify Light, Medium, Heavy, your character’s Skill input, and Guard without looking at the control reminder.
Assemble: add the team
Assemble introduces the cooperative actions that distinguish a four-character team from a conventional one-on-one fighter. It is where you learn to call teammates, use team attacks, and understand how your selected characters become available during a match.

What are the basic controls and beginner combos?
Begin with the official guide’s short Link Attack examples. They are teaching routes, not guaranteed optimal combos for every character, balance update, or situation.
Three simple routes to memorize
| Input sequence | Official result | Why practice it |
|---|---|---|
| Light → Light → Light → Light | Chains into a Skill and can trigger a Break, described as a stage transition. | The easiest repeated-button route and your first way to connect a team-changing event. |
| Medium → Medium → Medium | Leads into a Super Skill. | A compact route for learning how a stronger normal attack sequence ends. |
| Heavy → Heavy → Heavy | Leads into an Ultimate Skill. | A simple way to practice the heaviest attack route and its powerful follow-through. |
Once those sequences are comfortable, the guide gives a more advanced example: Light → Medium → Heavy → Skill → Assemble Rush → Follow-up Attack. It combines normal attacks with a Skill and a team action, so practice each part separately before trying the full sequence.
What a Break means
A Break is not just a combo label. It can create a stage transition or wall splat and affects which members of your four-character team are available. The FAQ says Breaks can be caused by certain attacks or throws, selected Skill attacks, or a successful Light-route Link Attack near the edge of the screen. Because the exact trigger depends on the attack and situation, use Training Mode to identify how your chosen character reaches one rather than assuming every combo will do it.
How should I defend?
Start with ordinary Guard
- Standing Guard: hold back.
- Crouching Guard: hold down-back.
Make Guard your first defensive habit. Hold the correct direction while observing whether the opponent attacks high or low, then look for a safe moment to return to offense.
Recommended Free Tools
Use Assemble Counter when you are not guarding
Press □ + × while not guarding. Assemble Counter performs a backstep and can automatically counter an attack during that maneuver. It is a defensive movement option, not a replacement for blocking every situation; test its timing against a predictable Training Mode attack.
Use Crossover while guarding
Press □ + × while guarding to call in a teammate. Crossover interrupts the opponent and creates a counteroffensive opening. Because both Assemble Counter and Crossover use the same button combination, the state you are in—guarding or not guarding—determines which action occurs.
Should I use Quick Skills or motion inputs?
The game gives you two input styles, and choosing the simpler one first is sensible.

| Input style | How it works | Officially stated trade-off | Best starting use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quick Skills | Executes a Skill with one button; the button can be customized in control settings. | Lower input complexity, but the guide says it deals slightly less damage and generates less Skill Gauge than a Command Input. | Learning a character, confirming your first combos, and avoiding missed motions. |
| Command Inputs (motion inputs) | Use the traditional directional motions followed by an attack button. | The guide says they provide slightly higher damage and generate more Skill Gauge. | Adding efficiency to routes after the character’s basic actions feel reliable. |
Start with Quick Skills while you learn spacing, Link Attacks, and team calls. Then replace the Skill portion of a practiced combo with its Command Input and compare your consistency. The goal is not to abandon Quick Skills; it is to use the input that lets you complete the action under pressure.
How do teams work during a match?
Your four-character selection is staged
You select four characters for a team, but the official FAQ says only the first two are available when the match starts. The remaining members are assembled after a Break or after you lose a round. A new player who sees only two portraits at the opening has not lost the other characters; this is the normal team progression.
Plan around Breaks and rounds
Because a Break can unlock additional team members, your first practical team goal is not to use all four immediately. Learn one dependable route that can produce a Break, especially the Light-route Link Attack near the edge when your character supports it. When a round is lost, the FAQ also says the remaining team members are assembled, so the match can change as more of your roster enters play.
Build a role contrast, not a “best team”
For a first experiment, pair a close-range character such as Wolverine with a ranged character such as Iron Man, following the official guide’s example. This lets you feel the difference between pressing forward at close distance and controlling space from farther away. Other combinations are valid; the guide explicitly makes personal favorites the deciding factor.
What should I practice in my first sessions?
Session 1: complete the tutorial
- Finish Basics with Captain America or your chosen first character.
- Confirm Light, Medium, Heavy, Skill, standing Guard, and crouching Guard.
- Complete Assemble and perform each team action it introduces.
Session 2: make one attack reliable
- Enter Training Mode.
- Repeat Light → Light → Light → Light until you can perform it without watching the buttons.
- Try the Medium and Heavy routes separately.
- Practice the longer Light → Medium → Heavy → Skill → Assemble Rush → Follow-up Attack route in pieces.
Session 3: add defense
- Set a training bot to perform a predictable attack.
- Hold back, then down-back, to see how standing and crouching Guard behave.
- Test Assemble Counter with □ + × while not guarding.
- Test Crossover with □ + × while guarding.
The FAQ says Training Mode includes command-input, frame-data, and damage displays, scenario presets, bot settings, and bot recording/replay. It also supports local two-player training and an online training option in a Room Match. Use one measurable goal per session—one Link Attack, one defensive response, or one team action after a Break—rather than trying to memorize an entire character at once.
Which modes are available for practice and offline play?
The current FAQ lists these offline modes:
- Episode Mode
- Local Versus
- Training Mode
- All-Star Arena
- Battle Guides
- Character Guides
Arcadia Rumble is also playable offline, with optional online features. Startup Battle is the best first stop for controls; Training Mode is where you turn those lessons into repeatable actions. Battle Guides and Character Guides are useful when you are ready to learn beyond the initial routes.

Common first-session problems and fixes
“Only two of my four characters are available.”
That is expected at the start of a match. The first two selected characters begin available; the rest are assembled after a Break or a lost round.
“I cannot tell which Skill input to use.”
Use Quick Skills while learning and customize their button in control settings. Once you can complete the route consistently, try the corresponding Command Input for the guide’s stated damage and Skill Gauge advantage.
“My combo works in the tutorial but not in a match.”
Shorten the goal. Practice one Link Attack in Training Mode, then add the Skill, Assemble Rush, or Follow-up Attack one piece at a time. The official examples are routes to learn, not guarantees that every character or position produces the same result.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“I keep getting hit while trying to counter.”
Check your state before pressing □ + ×. Assemble Counter requires that you are not guarding; Crossover requires that you are guarding. Test each option against a recorded bot attack so the timing and condition are clear.
How many characters and languages does the released game list?
The support FAQ, checked October 13, 2026, lists 20 launch characters and 17 supported languages. The language total includes 10 fully localized languages and 7 text-only languages. These are roster and localization counts, not competitive performance statistics; no official tier ranking or universally strongest team is established here.
Your first-match checklist
- Choose a favorite or an Ease-of-Use-friendly character.
- Complete Basics and Assemble in Startup Battle.
- Settle on Quick Skills before experimenting with motion inputs.
- Learn one Light, Medium, or Heavy Link Attack.
- Practice standing Guard and crouching Guard.
- Know the difference between Assemble Counter and Crossover.
- Expect only two team members at the opening.
- Use a Break or a lost round to bring the remaining characters into play.
- Set one Training Mode goal before each practice session.
Once those habits are automatic, expand to a second character, then a second team role. That gradual approach follows the game’s own teaching structure without requiring you to master all 20 launch characters before you can enjoy a match.
