The same private-room system also includes a dedicated cabinet for practicing together. PS5 and PC players can use cross-play, while PS5 online play requires PlayStation Plus and PC online features require an internet connection plus a PlayStation account.
Which multiplayer route should you use?
The right option depends on where the players are and whether the session is a match or a practice session. The official game FAQ lists Local Versus as an offline mode. Online friend sessions use Room Matches, also described as private rooms. Ranked and Casual Matches are available when you want to play online outside a private room.

A match is not a cooperative campaign or a four-person brawl. Each match has two opposing players, and each player controls a four-character team. The larger player count associated with the online lobby describes people gathered in the lobby, not simultaneous fighters.

Use the table as a quick filter. If both players can sit at one display, Local Versus avoids accounts, subscriptions and matchmaking. If you are in different homes, Room Match is the private option. If you want to work on timing before playing a full bout, stay in that room and use its online-training cabinet. Ranked and Casual are for online games that do not depend on arranging a private room with one particular friend.

How to play locally on one system
Choose Local Versus
For couch play, select the game’s Local Versus option and have the second player join on the same system. This is the offline route identified by the official FAQ and PlayStation product information. Because it is offline content, it does not require an internet connection or a PlayStation Plus subscription.
Local Versus is the practical choice when both players are in the same room, when the internet connection is unavailable, or when you want to avoid online account and subscription requirements. It is also the only route in this guide that does not depend on an online service being reachable.
What local play does and does not mean
- Both players use the same PS5 or PC.
- The mode is a head-to-head match, with one player on each opposing side.
- Each side uses a team of four characters; the team format does not turn the match into four-player co-op.
- Local Versus is separate from Room Matches, Ranked Matches, and Casual Matches, which are online modes.
- No PS Plus purchase is needed for this offline route, and the game does not need to contact an online lobby to start the match.
On PC, the store listing describes shared or split-screen PvP as a feature. That label is consistent with using one computer for local competition, but the exact controller assignment and screen prompts can depend on the hardware and the current game build. Connect the controllers before entering Local Versus and follow the prompts shown by the game rather than relying on a universal keyboard or button layout.

Check the platform requirements first
On PS5, online play needs an internet connection and PlayStation Plus. On PC, online features need an internet connection and a PlayStation account. The PC listing identifies Steam and Epic as supported PC platforms and labels online PvP, shared or split-screen PvP, and cross-platform multiplayer as features. A PlayStation account is therefore an online requirement on PC even when the game was obtained through a PC storefront.
These are access requirements, not recommendations for a particular subscription tier or controller. The available information does not establish regional PlayStation Plus pricing or terms, so check the current terms for your account region if you are deciding whether to subscribe. The requirement applies to the PS5 player in a cross-play session; the PC player still needs the PlayStation account and internet connection specified for PC.
Create or join a Room Match
- Make sure both players are online and using an eligible platform account.
- Have one player create a Room Match. The official FAQ also calls this a private room.
- Have the other player join that friend’s Room Match.
- Once both players are in the room, select the activity you want to play by following the options shown in the game.
The official material confirms the Room Match route but does not publish a complete menu-by-menu sequence for creating a standard versus match. Button names, screen order, and prompts can change with updates or differ between PS5 and PC, so this guide does not invent a specific button path. Use the game’s current on-screen prompts after entering the room.
A private room is different from merely entering a public lobby. The room gives the two friends a controlled place to meet, while the broader lobby can include many people who are waiting or arranging other games. If an invitation or room listing does not appear, first confirm that the host actually created a Room Match and that the second player is looking for that friend’s room rather than only browsing general matchmaking.
How to train together online
Online practice uses the same private-room entry point, but the destination is a specific cabinet inside the room. The official FAQ’s instruction is: “To train with friends online, create or join a friend’s Room Match and head to the cabinet that is dedicated for online training.” Both players interact with that kiosk to access training together.
This distinction matters because joining a Room Match alone does not necessarily put you into a normal versus bout. If the goal is to test assists, rehearse a team combination, or practice spacing with a friend, look for the dedicated online-training cabinet after both players are present. The FAQ does not specify a different subscription or a separate matchmaking queue for this activity; it uses the same online requirements as the room itself.
Training together is useful when one player is learning a character or when both players want to repeat a situation without immediately committing to a ranked game. It is still an online activity, however, so a PS5 participant needs PlayStation Plus and a PC participant needs the stated PlayStation-account and internet access. Do not confuse this cabinet with a local training mode or assume that a room automatically launches practice as soon as someone joins.
Cross-play between PS5 and PC
PlayStation’s product page confirms cross-play between PS5 and PC. A friend on PS5 can therefore play online with a friend on a supported PC platform, provided both players meet their platform’s online requirements and enter the same online session.
Recommended Free Tools
Cross-play does not remove the PS5 subscription requirement. The PS5 player still needs PlayStation Plus for online play, while the PC player still needs an internet connection and a PlayStation account. Cross-play also does not change the match format: the fight remains two opposing players, each using a four-character team.

The PC platform options listed for the game are Steam and Epic. Buying through either storefront does not replace the PlayStation account requirement for online features. If a cross-play session fails, check platform eligibility and account sign-in on both sides before treating it as a room or region problem.
Understanding the 64-player lobby figure
The PlayStation listing describes an online lobby that can hold up to 64 players. Treat that as a lobby-capacity specification: it indicates how many people may be present in the broader online gathering, not how many combatants appear in one fight.
The official FAQ defines the match itself as two opposing players. Other people in the lobby may be waiting, arranging games, or selecting a room rather than fighting simultaneously. This is why the 64-player lobby number should not be read as 64-player combat or as evidence of a large-scale cooperative mode.
Changing lobby regions
The FAQ says players may choose another region’s lobby when it is not full. That can help when a preferred lobby has reached capacity or when you are trying to meet a friend in a different regional listing. Region selection affects where you look for the session; it does not alter the two-player match structure.
If you are coordinating a meeting, agree on the region and room before searching. A full regional lobby is not proof that the game is down, and changing regions does not turn the room into a public 64-player match. The capacity number describes the gathering around the matches, while the actual bout remains one player against one player.
Ranked and Casual Matches
Room Matches are the private-friend solution. Ranked and Casual Matches are the alternatives when you want online games outside a private room. They still rely on the same general online access conditions: an internet connection and the appropriate platform account, with PlayStation Plus required for PS5 online play.
Use Ranked when you want the game’s competitive matchmaking context, and Casual when you want an online game without making a private friend room the center of the session. Neither mode should be described as campaign co-op; the official match description remains one player against one opposing player.
These modes are useful when your friend is unavailable or when you want opponents beyond your usual group. They are not a workaround for platform requirements. A PS5 player still needs PlayStation Plus, and a PC player still needs the internet connection and PlayStation account required for online features.
A practical decision guide
Both players are sitting at the same display
Start with Local Versus. It avoids online requirements and is the quickest route to a direct head-to-head match on one system.
You are in different locations and want privacy
Use a Room Match. One player creates the room and the other joins it. On PS5, confirm that the online player has PlayStation Plus; on PC, confirm that the player has a PlayStation account and an internet connection.
You want to practice rather than fight immediately
Enter the friend’s Room Match and use the dedicated online-training cabinet. Both players must interact with the kiosk to access the shared training activity.

You want online opponents beyond your friend
Choose Ranked or Casual instead of a private room. These are online modes, so the platform requirements still apply.

Your friend is on a different platform
Use the supported PS5-to-PC cross-play path. Make sure the PS5 player satisfies the PS5 online requirement and the PC player satisfies the PC account and internet requirement before trying to meet in an online session.
You have no reliable internet connection
Use Local Versus if both players can share the same system. Room Matches, online training, Ranked and Casual all depend on online access, while Local Versus is specifically identified as offline.
Troubleshooting friend sessions
The local option is unavailable or you are being asked to go online
Confirm that you are selecting Local Versus rather than Room Match, Ranked, or Casual. Local Versus is the documented offline mode. If both players are sharing one system, an internet connection and PS Plus should not be necessary for that route.

Check two prerequisites separately: the console must be connected to the internet, and the account used for online play must have PlayStation Plus. The game’s online-room features cannot replace either requirement.
A PC player cannot access online features
Verify the internet connection and the PlayStation account associated with online play. Steam and Epic availability does not remove the PlayStation-account requirement stated for PC online features.
The two players cannot find the same room
Confirm that one player created a Room Match and that the other is joining that friend’s room rather than looking only in a general lobby. If a regional lobby is full, the FAQ allows choosing another region’s lobby when it has space. For PS5-to-PC sessions, verify that both players are using the supported cross-play platforms and have met their respective online requirements.
You expected more than two fighters
The 64-player figure applies to lobby capacity. The match specification is two opposing players, each controlling a four-character team. A team of four characters is not four human players.
Online training does not start as expected
Make sure both players are inside the same Room Match, then locate the cabinet dedicated to online training. Both players must interact with that kiosk. Do not look for a separate co-op campaign or assume that entering a room automatically starts training.
A friend is on PC and you are on PS5
Cross-play is supported between PS5 and PC, but each side keeps its own access conditions. Check PlayStation Plus on PS5 and the PlayStation account plus internet connection on PC. Storefront choice on PC does not change that account requirement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Controllers and supported hardware
Arcade sticks and leverless controllers are optional. The official FAQ states that any PS5-compatible arcade stick or leverless controller can be used on PS5. PC players should check compatibility with their own hardware. No particular controller model is required for Local Versus, Room Matches, online training, Ranked, or Casual play.
Controller choice does not change the multiplayer rules: the game still assigns two opposing sides in a match, and online sessions still require the relevant platform access conditions. For local play, make sure each player has an input device recognized by the system; for online play, hardware compatibility is a separate question from account and subscription access.

The game is listed for PS5 and PC, with PC distribution through Steam and Epic. The official FAQ also confirms that a physical PS5 Standard Edition exists. That confirms the edition’s availability as a product format, but it does not establish a current retailer price or stock status.
Rank #4
The official launch time is listed as August 6, 2026 in UTC. PlayStation’s regional information lists August 7 for New Zealand, Australia, Japan, and Korea, so the calendar date can differ by region even when the launch moment is the same. Service, account, and store conditions can change after launch; check the current platform pages if you are troubleshooting access on a later date.
The physical PS5 Standard Edition is a game-format detail, not a multiplayer requirement. You do not need a special edition, arcade stick or leverless controller to use Local Versus or Room Match. Likewise, no current price, subscription fee or retailer stock claim should be inferred from the edition’s existence.
What this multiplayer setup does not promise
- It does not describe a cooperative story or campaign mode.
- It does not support 64 simultaneous fighters; 64 is the stated lobby capacity.
- It does not make a four-character team equivalent to four human players.
- It does not provide a published, universal button-by-button menu path for creating every type of online match.
- It does not make PS5 online play free of the PlayStation Plus requirement.
- It does not make PC online play independent of a PlayStation account.
- It does not turn online training into a separate offline or campaign activity; training is accessed through a Room Match cabinet.
For a friend session, the reliable choices are therefore clear: Local Versus for two people sharing one system, Room Match for a private online game, and the Room Match training cabinet for shared practice. Cross-play connects PS5 and PC players, while the actual bout remains a two-player, four-character-team match.
