MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls vs. Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite — How the Team Fighters Compare

By VGSources Team 11 min read

MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls and Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite are team-based Marvel fighters built around different match identities. Tōkon uses a four-character Marvel team format and is announced for PS5 and PC, with an original story and several solo, local, and online options. Infinite is Capcom’s Marvel-and-Capcom crossover, built around free-form 2v2 battles, selectable Infinity Stones, and a mode lineup that includes Story, Arcade, Training, Mission, ranked play, casual play, leaderboards, and spectator-enabled lobbies.

That makes team size, crossover scope, and signature mechanics the clearest ways to distinguish them. Official product descriptions do not establish which game is better balanced, faster, easier to execute, more competitive, or more populated online. Those judgments require current hands-on testing rather than a comparison of feature lists.

What each game is

MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls

Arc System Works developed MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, and Sony Interactive Entertainment published it. PlayStation announced the game for PS5 and PC with a release date of August 6, 2026. Its presentation centers on Marvel characters, an original story, and a broad selection of ways to play outside a standard head-to-head match.

The platform announcement describes fighting CPU opponents and playing online, while the game’s official FAQ names additional offline activities. That combination positions Tōkon as a Marvel-only team fighter with a substantial single-player and practice package, not simply an online versus client. The announcement also frames the game as a new interpretation of Marvel fighting rather than a continuation of the Marvel vs. Capcom crossover format.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite is Capcom’s 2017 crossover fighting game. Its central premise is that players build teams from two separate fictional universes: Marvel and Capcom. Capcom describes the battles as free-form 2v2 matches and highlights the Infinity Stone system as the game’s major strategic hook.

Infinite also has a cinematic story involving Ultron Sigma. Its listed modes cover a conventional arcade-fighter progression—Story, Arcade, Training, and Mission—alongside ranked and casual online matches, global leaderboards, and online lobbies that support spectators. The result is a crossover structure in which team construction and Stone selection are both part of the pre-match decision.

How the team formats differ

Tōkon’s four-character team format

The official Tōkon materials describe a four-character team format. That is the key answer to the question “Is Marvel Tōkon 4v4?” In the terminology supplied by the publisher, each side is built around four characters. The descriptions available here do not specify how many fighters are simultaneously active, how assists are triggered, how characters enter or leave the field, or whether every team member participates in an identical way. It would therefore be inaccurate to turn “four-character team” into a more detailed control scheme without additional documentation.

For a buyer, the practical implication is that team construction is a larger roster-management decision than in a two-character format. You are choosing four Marvel characters rather than two, but the official material does not yet establish whether that creates more tactical layers, longer matches, different resource rules, or a steeper execution curve. Those are hands-on questions, not conclusions that can be drawn from the team count alone.

Infinite’s 2v2 crossover structure

Infinite’s official description is explicit about free-form 2v2 battles. A player pairs Marvel and Capcom characters, then selects an Infinity Stone before the fight. The two-character limit makes the crossover pairing itself central: a team can be built around how one Marvel fighter complements one Capcom fighter, while the Stone adds another pre-match choice.

“Free-form” identifies the match format but does not, by itself, define a preferred team order, assist timing, tag rules, or optimal strategy. Capcom’s listing establishes the existence of 2v2 battles and the Stone selection; it does not provide a comparative measurement of match length, balance, or competitive difficulty.

What the team-size difference does—and does not—tell you

  • It does tell you that the games ask you to assemble teams of different sizes: four Marvel characters in Tōkon versus two characters drawn from Marvel and Capcom in Infinite.
  • It does not prove that Tōkon has twice as many active fighters on screen, that its matches last longer, or that it is automatically more complex.
  • It does not prove that Infinite is simpler. Its crossover pairing and Infinity Stone choice add decisions that have no direct equivalent in the cited Tōkon descriptions.
  • It does not establish which game has the stronger roster, better balance, faster pace, or larger competitive scene.

Marvel-only roster versus Marvel-and-Capcom crossover

Tōkon’s single-universe identity

Tōkon’s official story and character framing are Marvel-focused. The game is presented as an original Marvel story, so its roster identity comes from relationships and conflicts within that universe rather than from a publisher-to-publisher crossover. If you want a team composed entirely of Marvel characters and a narrative written specifically around Marvel’s setting, Tōkon is the more direct fit based on the official description.

Infinite’s two-universe identity

Infinite’s defining roster concept is the pairing of Marvel and Capcom characters. The crossover is not a side feature: it is the basis of team creation and the premise of the story conflict involving Ultron Sigma. A player choosing Infinite is choosing both a fighting game and a mash-up of two game universes.

The sources cited here do not publish a complete, current roster count for either title. They also do not support claims about which individual characters are stronger, easier to learn, or better partners. Those details can change through patches, downloadable content, or platform-specific updates and should be checked in current game documentation.

Signature mechanics: Infinity Stones and what is established about Tōkon

Infinite’s six Infinity Stones

Capcom states that Infinite lets each player select one of six Infinity Stones. The chosen Stone changes character abilities and can affect the battle. This gives Infinite a clearly documented layer of customization before the match begins: team selection is followed by a Stone decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The listing does not, in the material cited here, provide a complete explanation of every Stone’s effect, activation condition, cooldown, or interaction with every character. For exact move properties, consult the in-game command list and training mode rather than assuming that a Stone’s name alone describes its practical use.

What is currently documented for Tōkon

The cited Tōkon announcement and FAQ establish the four-character format, Marvel setting, story, offline modes, local play, and online play. They do not provide enough information for a full comparison of universal systems, assists, tag mechanics, resources, or special-move inputs. A fair comparison should keep that boundary visible: Infinite has a named six-Stone system in its official product description, while the available Tōkon material is more focused on format, modes, and accessibility goals.

PlayStation attributed the following design goal to Kazuto Sekine, Game Director and Lead Battle Designer: “From the beginning, we aimed to make MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls a title that could be enjoyed by a wide variety of players.” The same announcement says the controls and mechanics are intended to be easy to pick up while retaining depth and versatility for high-level competition. These are developer intentions, not independent evidence that the released game is easier to learn or deeper in tournament play. The statement appears in PlayStation’s Tōkon launch announcement.

Story, solo content, and practice options

Tōkon’s listed offline activities

The official Tōkon FAQ lists several activities beyond ordinary versus matches:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Episode Mode: a story-focused option listed among the game’s offline content.
  • Local Versus: matches against another person on the same system setup.
  • Training Mode: a dedicated practice environment.
  • All-Star Arena: an additional offline activity named in the FAQ.
  • Battle Guides: instructional material intended to explain fighting concepts or systems.
  • Character Guides: character-specific learning material.

PlayStation also describes fighting CPU opponents and online play. The available descriptions do not specify the number of episodes, CPU difficulty levels, tutorial length, rollback implementation, or whether every listed mode is available in exactly the same form on PS5 and PC.

Infinite’s campaign and training lineup

Capcom lists a cinematic Story Mode built around Ultron Sigma, plus Arcade, Training, and Mission modes. The game also advertises ranked and casual online matches, global leaderboards, and lobbies with spectator mode. This is a more explicitly named competitive-service package than the Tōkon FAQ, which emphasizes its offline guides and arenas in addition to versus play.

Neither publisher’s description supplies a comparable measurement of campaign length, tutorial quality, CPU behavior, or training-tool depth. A mode with the same name can also function differently across games, so “Training Mode” should be read as a category, not as proof that the two practice environments have identical tools.

Online play and service timing

Tōkon’s announced server schedule

The official Tōkon FAQ gives online server timing of August 6, 2026 at 3:00 PM UTC, which it also renders as August 6 at 8:00 PM PST and August 7 at midnight JST. Those times describe the announced service schedule and should not be treated as a permanent guarantee of uptime. Server status, account requirements, maintenance windows, and regional access can change, so check the official Tōkon FAQ for current information before attempting to play online.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PlayStation’s product description confirms online play as part of the offering, but the cited materials do not establish current player population, matchmaking speed, netcode quality, cross-play rules, or ranking structure.

Infinite’s named online features

Capcom lists ranked and casual matches, global leaderboards, and online lobbies with spectator mode. These labels tell you what the product advertises: competitive matchmaking, unranked play, public performance tracking, and rooms where other players can watch. They do not establish how active those features are now, how quickly a match is found, or whether service quality is consistent in your region.

Because Infinite launched in 2017 and Tōkon’s announced release date is in 2026, the two games are at different points in their service lifecycles. That calendar difference alone is not evidence that one has a healthier online community. Check current platform notices, regional store pages, and recent official service updates if online activity is your deciding factor.

A pre-purchase verification checklist

  1. Open the official platform listing for your region rather than relying on a third-party summary.
  2. Confirm that the platform is supported: PS5, PC, Steam, or Epic for Tōkon as announced; Steam for the Capcom catalog listing.
  3. Read the current online-service and account requirements, because server policies can change after launch.
  4. Check the edition description for included characters, story content, and downloadable items instead of assuming every release bundles the same content.
  5. Review the game’s current support page for maintenance notices or regional restrictions if online play is important.

Which game fits which kind of player?

If your priority is… Start with… Why that follows from the official descriptions
A Marvel-only team fighter MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls Its story and team format are presented as Marvel-focused.
Mixing Marvel characters with Capcom characters Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite Its 2v2 battles are built around selecting fighters from both universes.
A four-character team structure MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls The official materials describe a four-character team format.
A documented pre-match power choice Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite Players choose one of six Infinity Stones, which alter abilities and can affect the fight.
Story and Marvel-specific offline guides MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls The FAQ lists Episode Mode, All-Star Arena, Battle Guides, and Character Guides.
Ranked and casual matchmaking with spectator lobbies Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite Capcom explicitly lists ranked matches, casual matches, leaderboards, and spectator-enabled lobbies.
Playing on a current PlayStation console MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls PS5 is part of its announced platform lineup.
Playing through a Steam catalog listing Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite Capcom’s current catalog lists a Steam product; verify the regional page before purchase.

This table is a way to match documented features to preferences, not a quality ranking. It does not claim that one game has better combat, stronger balance, or a more active community.

Questions the official descriptions cannot answer by themselves

A responsible comparison has to separate product facts from conclusions that require testing. The supplied official materials do not publish comparable evidence for:

  • Relative balance between characters, teams, or Infinity Stones.
  • Match speed, average round length, or the amount of time spent controlling each fighter.
  • Execution difficulty, input leniency, combo length, or the learning curve for advanced techniques.
  • Rollback netcode, latency behavior, cross-play, matchmaking times, or regional population.
  • Roster size, downloadable-character totals, sales, review scores, or player counts.
  • Whether Tōkon’s four-character format is deeper, more accessible, or more strategically demanding than Infinite’s 2v2 structure.

Those topics may matter more to an experienced fighting-game player than the headline team count, but they need current gameplay tests or a source that publishes the exact measurement. Until then, treat claims about superiority as opinion rather than established fact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom-line comparison

Choose based on the structure you actually want. Tōkon is the newer, Marvel-centered option with a four-character team format, an original story, PS5 and PC plans, and an unusually broad list of named offline guides and activities. Infinite is the established Marvel-and-Capcom crossover whose official identity is 2v2 play plus a selectable Infinity Stone, supported by Story, Arcade, Training, Mission, ranked, casual, leaderboard, and spectator-lobby features.

If your first question is “Do I want four Marvel fighters on a team or a two-character Marvel/Capcom pairing with a Stone?” the answer points you toward the corresponding game. If your deciding factors are balance, competitive depth, online population, or moment-to-moment feel, wait for current hands-on evidence rather than inferring those qualities from the official feature lists.
