Movement, combat and spectacle

Reviewers also responded to its large-scale action and visual spectacle.
What were the main criticisms?
A familiar formula and open-world activities
Some critics viewed the sequel as a refinement rather than a reinvention. IGN’s Simon Cardy rated it 8/10 and said its combat and web-swinging remain familiar, with new abilities and adjustments elevating the established formula rather than transforming it. Other criticism focused on familiar open-world busywork and activities that may feel repetitive to players returning from earlier games.

Pacing and mission variety
Not every reviewer found the story’s separate threads equally well connected throughout. Totilo called the story overstuffed and said the heroes’ storylines did not connect sufficiently until late. He also objected to missions that become extended fights against large groups of enemies. These are representative reservations, not a claim that all critics identified the same flaws.

How should you read the critic consensus?
The high aggregate reflects broadly positive criticism, not unanimous agreement or a guarantee that the game suits every player. The PS5 snapshot included one mixed review, and reviewers differed on how much the familiar formula, open-world tasks and pacing affected the experience. Taken together, their comments describe a polished, exciting sequel whose movement and character-led action are major draws, while its structure may feel less fresh to players seeking a substantial reinvention.
