“maxnet.dll was not found,” “The program can’t start because maxnet.dll is missing,” and “Failed to load maxnet.dll” usually appear when an old game installation is incomplete or damaged. The most likely owner of maxnet.dll is Anno 1602, also released as 1602 A.D., rather than Windows itself.
The 60-second answer
maxnet.dll is a legacy application DLL associated most strongly with Anno 1602 from MAX DESIGN. It is not a Windows system file, Microsoft runtime, DirectX component, or normal Autodesk 3ds Max dependency.

Use this repair order:
- Note the executable named in the error.
- Open the game folder and check for
maxnet.dll. - Verify or repair the game files through its launcher or store client.
- If repair is unavailable, reinstall the same legitimate Anno 1602 release.
- Do not copy the DLL into
System32orSysWOW64. - Do not download a random replacement DLL or run
regsvr32against it. - If the error remains, investigate quarantine, mixed game versions, missing dependencies, or a damaged executable.
A missing-module message can mean that maxnet.dll is absent, or that another DLL required by it is missing.
What is maxnet.dll
Public file metadata describes maxnet.dll as “Komunikations DLL,” with the product name MAXNET.DLL and publisher MAX DESIGN. Catalogue listings commonly identify the classic file as a 32-bit DLL, with a reported version and file size, but those details are catalogue metadata rather than current official specifications.

The strongest association is Anno 1602. An installed-file inventory places Maxnet.dll beside files such as 1602.exe, Maxsound.dll, MFC42.dll, and other game components. Max Design is also documented as the developer of Anno 1602.
The filename alone cannot prove which program requested the file. If the error names another executable, or the file is located inside a modern unrelated application, inspect that installation instead.
Identify what actually failed
Before changing files, record the complete error and its path.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck these details:
- Does the message say
maxnet.dll,maxnetworker.dll, orMaxNetWorker.dll? - Which executable appears in the title or body of the error?
- Is the game the original CD release, a store release, or a History Edition?
- Did the issue begin after reinstalling Windows, moving the game, running disk cleanup, or restoring an old backup?
- Did antivirus quarantine a file?
- Are other files such as
Maxsound.dll,MFC42.dll, orSMACKW32.DLLalso missing? - Does
maxnet.dllexist in the same folder as the game executable?
To inspect the path, right-click the game shortcut, select Properties, and read the Target field. Select Open File Location if available. The folder containing the requested executable is the first place to check.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall Anno 1602
This is the most likely solution because the DLL belongs with the complete game installation. Reinstalling only one DLL can leave missing dependencies, mismatched binaries, or an incompatible executable.
If you use a store launcher
- Exit the game.
- Open the launcher that installed Anno 1602.
- Open your library.
- Select Anno 1602 or 1602 A.D.
- Open its settings or management menu.
- Choose Verify, Repair, Scan and repair, or the equivalent option.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the game from the launcher or its installed shortcut.
The exact wording varies by launcher. A successful repair normally reports that files were checked and damaged or missing files were restored. Test the game before applying compatibility tweaks.
If you use an original installer
- Back up saved games if they are stored inside the game folder.
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find Anno 1602 if it appears in the list.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer from the disc or a backed-up installer.
- Install the game into a new folder rather than reusing a partly damaged directory.
- Apply only the patch intended for that exact release.
- Launch the game and check whether the error is gone.
If Windows does not list the game, remove or rename the old installation folder only after backing up saves, then run the original installer again.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

Do not combine files from the classic CD version, a modern store version, and a History Edition. Even when filenames look similar, the executable and its private DLLs may not be interchangeable.
A 32-bit game expects a compatible 32-bit DLL. Replacing it with a file from another edition can produce a “bad image,” “not designed to run on Windows,” or failed-load error instead of fixing the original problem.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove an old game DLL after installation or during a scan.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
maxnet.dllor the game folder. - Check the detection name and the file path.
- If the file came directly from the original installer and the detection is clearly a false positive, follow your security software’s restore procedure.
- Reinstall the complete game if the file’s origin is uncertain.
- Run another scan before launching the game.
Do not restore a DLL merely because its filename matches the error. If antivirus removes the restored file again, leave it quarantined and submit the file to the security vendor for analysis. A clean reinstall from a legitimate installer is safer than repeatedly downloading replacements.

Fix 3: Restore the original folder structure
Windows normally searches an application’s own directory early in the DLL search process. An old game may therefore expect maxnet.dll beside 1602.exe.
Check the installation folder:
- Right-click the game shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Choose Open File Location.
- Confirm that the game executable and its private DLLs are in the same installation structure.
- If you moved the folder, move the complete installation back together.
- Start the game from its installed shortcut or launcher.
Do not place maxnet.dll in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Those directories are intended for Windows components. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system files while SysWOW64 supports 32-bit redirection. Copying a 32-bit game DLL into either folder, or both, is not a valid repair.
Fix 4: Check architecture and corrupted binaries
Catalogue metadata identifies the classic maxnet.dll as 32-bit. A 32-bit application cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit process cannot use a 32-bit DLL as its equivalent replacement.
Architecture problems commonly produce messages such as:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- “The application was unable to start correctly”
- “The file is either not designed to run on Windows”
- “Bad image”
- “Error loading maxnet.dll”
The practical fix is to restore the DLL and the executable from the same Anno 1602 release. Do not download a file labelled x64 simply because Windows itself is 64-bit. The game’s architecture matters.
If the file exists but fails to load, reinstall the complete game package. A truncated DLL or a missing dependency can look like an architecture problem.
Fix 5: Investigate missing dependencies
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that maxnet.dll itself is missing. Windows may be reporting that a dependency required by maxnet.dll cannot be loaded.
Look for other missing files in the same installation. Anno 1602 installations may contain several older libraries, including Maxsound.dll, MFC42.dll, and SMACKW32.DLL. Do not copy these individually from unrelated sources.
Instead:
- Run the game’s file verification function.
- Reinstall the complete matching release.
- Check Event Viewer if the error continues.
- Open Start and search for Event Viewer.
- Select Windows Logs, then Application.
- Look for an error recorded at the time of the failed launch.
- Note whether a different DLL or executable is named.
If the error names another file, repair that component rather than repeatedly replacing maxnet.dll.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 for this game DLL
regsvr32 is not a general DLL installation command. It is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components.

There is no reliable evidence that the classic maxnet.dll is a self-registering COM component. Running this command is therefore unlikely to repair the game:
regsvr32 maxnet.dll
It may simply report that the entry point is missing. Restore the file to the game directory through verification or reinstallation instead.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when Windows is also damaged
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party game DLL, so they are a secondary step.
Use them when you also see system-wide corruption, broken Windows features, unexplained application failures, or damaged protected files.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test Anno 1602 again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component store that SFC uses. If both commands report no corruption but the game still cannot start, return to the game installation rather than repeating the commands.
Manually hunting through Windows components and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it identifies, but its full repair is optional and reinstalling Anno 1602 remains the definitive fix for this game-owned DLL.
Fix 8: Consider drivers only for broader graphics or launch failures
A display-driver problem does not normally create a missing maxnet.dll error. Update drivers only if the game also crashes after starting, shows display corruption, or other games have recently developed graphics problems.
For a manual check:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click your graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
You can also select Windows Update in Settings and install available driver updates under Advanced options and Optional updates. Avoid changing drivers as the first response to a file-not-found message.
Finding the correct driver version manually can mean checking hardware models, Windows compatibility, and several optional packages. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers, while installation through the full version is optional; it will not replace the need to reinstall the game when maxnet.dll is missing.
Windows Features and old game compatibility
Do not enable random Windows Features to replace maxnet.dll. The file is not identified as a Windows component.
Recommended Free Tools
If the game starts but has a separate compatibility problem, open:
- Settings with Windows + I.
- System.
- Troubleshoot.
- Other troubleshooters.
- Run Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.
You can also right-click the game executable, select Properties, open Compatibility, and test the compatibility troubleshooter. Apply compatibility settings only after the installation is complete and the DLL error has been resolved.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
A replacement from an unverified DLL website can have the wrong architecture, wrong release, altered contents, or an incompatible dependency. It may silence one message while leaving the damaged installation intact.
The safer sources are:
- The original Anno 1602 disc or installer
- A legitimate store client’s repair or verification function
- A legitimate offline installer for the matching Anno 1602 release
- A complete reinstall from the same edition as the executable
Never download maxnet.dll and place it in both Windows system folders. That approach creates versioning and security risks and does not address missing companion files.
FAQ
Is maxnet.dll a Windows file?
No evidence identifies it as a Windows system DLL. It is associated with a third-party application, most strongly Anno 1602.
Which program installs maxnet.dll?
The most credible association is Anno 1602, also known as 1602 A.D., developed by MAX DESIGN. The filename alone cannot identify the program in every installation.
Should maxnet.dll be in System32?
No. It should normally be beside the game executable and other private game files.
Is maxnet.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
Catalogue metadata identifies the classic file as 32-bit. Use the file supplied with the matching game release rather than choosing a DLL based only on whether Windows is 64-bit.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as the first fix. maxnet.dll is not identified as one of those shared Microsoft runtime files. Repair or reinstall the complete game first.
Why does the error remain when the file is present?
A dependency may be missing, the file may be corrupted, antivirus may be removing it, or the DLL may not match the executable’s release. Reinstall the complete matching package and check the exact error text.
Is the Autodesk association correct?
There is no reliable evidence that the classic maxnet.dll belongs to Autodesk 3ds Max. Check the path and requesting executable if your error comes from another application.
What if reinstalling Anno 1602 does not work?
Confirm that the error still names maxnet.dll, check antivirus quarantine, remove mixed files from older editions, and inspect Event Viewer for another missing module. If the game executable itself is damaged, reinstall the entire release rather than replacing individual DLLs.

Quick Recap
Final checklist
Before launching the game again, confirm that:
- The error names
maxnet.dll, not a similarly named file. - You know which executable requested it.
maxnet.dllcame from the same Anno 1602 edition as that executable.- The file is beside the game executable.
- The complete installation has been verified or reinstalled.
- Antivirus has not quarantined the restored files.
- You did not copy the DLL into
System32orSysWOW64. - You did not run
regsvr32as a generic repair. - SFC and DISM were used only for broader Windows corruption.
- Any remaining error is checked for a different missing dependency.
