mdt2dbui.dll is an old Microsoft Design Tools database-designer DLL, associated with the Visual Studio 6.0 family and its Visual Database Tools. If mdt2dbui.dll is missing or cannot load, repair or reinstall the original program that installed it rather than downloading a loose DLL.
Microsoft described Visual Studio 6.0 as including Database Designer functionality for SQL Server and Oracle schemas in its Visual Studio 6.0 announcement. The file is not a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 component, and there is no reliable evidence that current Visual C++ Redistributable packages install it.
What the error means
Common reported variants include:
- “The program can’t start because mdt2dbui.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading mdt2dbui.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because mdt2dbui.dll was not found.”
- “mdt2dbui.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located in the dynamic link library mdt2dbui.dll.”
These messages do not all mean the same thing. Windows may be reporting that:
- the file was deleted or never installed;
- the file is present but damaged;
- another DLL required by it is missing;
- the application is loading the wrong architecture or version;
- the legacy program is incompatible with the current Windows installation.
The exact application named in the error matters. Check the title bar, the program that you launched, and the path shown in any expanded error message before changing files.

Fix 1: Repair the application that reports the error
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Start with the program that displays the error. This is the safest fix because the installer can restore the DLL together with its companion files, registration data, and dependencies.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the application associated with the error. It may be an old Visual Studio installation, a Microsoft developer tool, or another legacy application that uses Visual Database Tools.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options if shown.
- Select Repair and follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the same application again.
Some desktop programs do not provide an Advanced options or Repair button. Microsoft explains the available repair and removal paths in its guide to fixing programs that cannot be installed or removed.
If the program has its own installer, open it from the original installation media and choose Repair, Change, or Modify. Select the database-design or Visual Database Tools component if the installer offers individual features.
A successful repair should remove the startup error and allow the parent application to open. If the repair completes but the same message returns, continue with a full reinstall.

Time needed: 20–60 minutes
A missing mdt2dbui.dll usually indicates an incomplete installation, an interrupted uninstall, cleanup software removing old files, or a migration that copied the application without all of its components.
- Back up projects, connection settings, templates, and any license information belonging to the old application.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected program and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Run the original Microsoft installation media or a trusted installation package obtained through your organization’s software archive.
- Choose a complete installation, or explicitly include Visual Database Tools or Database Designer when the feature list appears.
- Complete the installation and restart Windows.
- Test the application before restoring custom files or plugins.
Microsoft’s archived Visual Studio 6.0 Service Pack 6 documentation describes the service pack scope for Visual Basic 6.0, Visual C++ 6.0, and Visual SourceSafe 6.0. It does not establish that every Visual Database Tools file is supplied by the service pack.

Do not treat the Visual Basic 6.0 SP6 cumulative update, VB60SP6-KB2708437-x86-ENU.msi, as a guaranteed replacement for this DLL. It is a security update for specific VB6 components. Likewise, other VB6 security rollups update defined components rather than serving as a standalone mdt2dbui.dll installer. Use Microsoft’s VB6 SP6 cumulative update page only when it matches the installed product.
Fix 3: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Antivirus software can quarantine an old DLL, particularly after a system migration or a new security definition update.

- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections for the application folder or
mdt2dbui.dll. - Expand a detection to view its path and details.
- Do not restore the file merely because its name matches the error.
- Verify that the file came from your original Microsoft installation media or a known-good backup.
- Scan the installer and the application folder before restoring anything.
- If the file is verified and the detection is a false positive, use Actions > Allow on device or restore it according to Microsoft’s Protection History guidance.
- Reinstall the parent program if the quarantine entry is unclear.
If Defender detects the installer itself, stop and investigate the installer’s provenance. Do not disable antivirus protection simply to force an old DLL into a system directory.
Fix 4: Match the 32-bit application and its components
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Historical records consistently identify mdt2dbui.dll as a 32-bit legacy DLL. A 32-bit application can require 32-bit components even when Windows 10 or Windows 11 is 64-bit.
Check the application rather than assuming that a 64-bit replacement is appropriate:
- Open Settings > System > About.
- Note the System type.
- Open the affected application’s installation folder.
- Check whether it is under
C:Program Files (x86)or another clearly 32-bit application directory. - Reinstall the matching 32-bit edition and its database-design features from the original product media.
Do not copy a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit application folder. Do not copy the file from another computer unless the original product, edition, updates, architecture, and installation path are known to match.

If the program needs a legacy Windows feature, open Start > Settings > Optional features > More Windows features. Enable only a feature explicitly required by the application’s documentation or installer. Randomly enabling legacy components will not recreate mdt2dbui.dll.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
mdt2dbui.dll is associated with an application, not a protected Windows system file. DISM and SFC normally will not restore it. Use these commands when Windows components also show corruption, built-in apps fail, or other system files are reporting errors.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the original application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker instructions. If SFC reports that it repaired files but the mdt2dbui.dll message remains, reinstall the parent application instead of repeating SFC.

Fix 6: Check drivers only if the application also has device errors
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A graphics, storage, or database driver is not normally the cause of a missing application DLL. Driver work is appropriate only when the same failure began with device errors, display problems, database connectivity failures, or entries marked with warnings in Device Manager.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, Network adapters, or the category named in the application’s documentation.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Read the Device status message on the General tab.
- Open the Driver tab and select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Test the application again.
Do not uninstall a working device driver merely because mdt2dbui.dll is missing. Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 as a generic DLL installer

regsvr32 applies to DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents its purpose and syntax in the regsvr32 command reference.
Running this blindly:
regsvr32 mdt2dbui.dll
may produce an error saying that the module loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. It cannot:

- convert a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit DLL;
- restore the correct product installation;
- fix an incompatible legacy application.
Use registration only when the original product documentation specifically instructs it and identifies the correct 32-bit or 64-bit regsvr32.exe.
Fix 8: Use System Restore only after a recent change
Time needed: 20–45 minutes
If the error began immediately after cleanup software, a failed update, or an application removal, System Restore may reverse the relevant system and application changes.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point and start the process.
- Sign in after Windows restarts and test the application.
System Restore normally rolls back system files and settings without removing personal files. Microsoft describes this and other recovery choices in its Windows recovery options. It is not a substitute for reinstalling a missing legacy component, so use the original installer if the restore does not help.

Downloading mdt2dbui.dll from a random DLL website is risky because the file may be modified, malicious, the wrong architecture, or a mismatched historical build. Even a genuine file may depend on other DLLs, installer data, registry entries, or a specific Visual Studio-era product.
