It is not a Windows system file, so the safest repair is usually to restore it through the installer or launcher of the program that requested it.
What openvr_api.dll does
OpenVR is an application programming interface and software development kit that lets VR software communicate with SteamVR and supported headsets. SteamVR is the runtime and user-facing VR platform, while OpenVR is the development interface that applications can use.
A game or application commonly keeps openvr_api.dll in its own installation directory. A Unity application may place it in a folder such as:
GameNameGameName_DataPlugins
A VR mod or compatibility layer may use a replacement DLL in a game-specific plugin folder. The correct copy depends on the executable, its architecture, the application build, and any installed mod.

Windows does not normally provide this file in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Version identification
The following versions and sizes have been observed, but they are not a universal inventory. Do not replace a working application copy merely because another copy has a different version or size.

The file may be supplied by Valve’s SDK, redistributed by a game developer, or modified by a VR mod. Copies are not automatically interchangeable.
What the error message means
You may see one of these messages:
- “The code execution cannot proceed because openvr_api.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because openvr_api.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “openvr_api.dll was not found.”
- “Bad Image: openvr_api.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located in the dynamic link library openvr_api.dll.”
- A loader error naming another DLL required by
openvr_api.dll.
A missing-file message usually means the application cannot find its expected copy. A “procedure entry point” error usually means the file exists but is incompatible with the application or another installed component. A “Bad Image” message can indicate corruption, an architecture mismatch, or a dependency problem. It does not prove that openvr_api.dll itself is the damaged file.

- The name of the game or application.
- The executable named in the error, if shown.
- The folder path displayed in the message.
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether the problem began after an update, mod installation, antivirus alert, SteamVR change, or file migration.
- Whether one program fails or several unrelated programs fail.
Fix 1: Verify the affected game or application
This is the most likely solution when only one game or VR application refuses to start.
For a Steam game
- Close the game and SteamVR.
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Start the game again from Steam.
Steam compares the installation with its official copy and restores missing or damaged files. If openvr_api.dll belongs to the game, this is more useful than repairing SteamVR itself.
If verification reports that files were replaced but the error remains, restart Windows and launch the game without its mod or compatibility layer. Some overlays and VR replacements deliberately substitute the application’s original OpenVR library.
For a non-Steam application
Open the application’s official launcher or installer and look for options named Repair, Verify, Scan, Restore, or Check files. Run the repair, restart Windows, and test the application.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the application through Settings → Apps → Installed apps, restart Windows, then reinstall it using the developer’s official installer. Back up saved games and configuration files first if the program stores them outside its installation folder.

Check the application folder
After verification or repair, do not copy a DLL from another program. Confirm that the application’s own installation tree now contains the file in the location expected by that application.
For a Unity application, inspect its *_DataPlugins directory. For another engine or a modded game, follow that software’s official installation instructions. The folder named in the error is more useful than a generic Windows folder.
Fix 2: Repair SteamVR when SteamVR itself is failing
Reinstalling SteamVR is appropriate when the error names SteamVR or several SteamVR components fail. It may not restore a game’s private copy of openvr_api.dll.

- Quit SteamVR.
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Use the library filter to display Tools.
- Find SteamVR.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open Installed Files or Local Files, depending on the Steam interface.
- Select Verify integrity of tool files.
- Restart SteamVR and test the headset.
If verification fails or SteamVR files remain damaged, uninstall SteamVR from Steam and install it again. Then verify the affected game separately. A successful SteamVR repair does not guarantee that a game’s bundled or modded OpenVR library has been restored.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a game-bundled DLL, particularly after a mod or compatibility replacement changes the file.
- Open Windows Security or your installed security product.
- Open Protection history, Quarantine, or Detection history.
- Search for an entry involving
openvr_api.dlland the affected application. - Check the full path and detection details.
- Restore the file only if it clearly belongs to a trusted, intact installation.
- After restoring it, run the game or application launcher’s file verification.
- Start the application again.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection. Do not whitelist an unknown DLL merely because its filename matches the error. If the file came from an unofficial mod package, remove the mod and restore the application’s original files instead.
Fix 4: Undo a VR mod or compatibility-layer replacement
OpenComposite, OpenXR conversions, headset-specific wrappers, and other VR modifications may replace or redirect OpenVR files. A replacement can be valid for one application version and incompatible with another.

Think back to the last change:
- Did the error begin after installing a VR mod?
- Did you switch from SteamVR to OpenComposite or OpenXR?
- Did a game update overwrite part of the mod?
- Did you copy a DLL into the game directory?
- Did you install a 32-bit plugin into a 64-bit game?
Disable the mod using its official instructions, remove only the files it installed, and verify the game files. If the mod has an official package for the current game version, reinstall that package after the unmodified game launches successfully.
Windows searches the application directory early in its DLL search process. An incorrect local copy can therefore override a compatible copy elsewhere. More information is available in Microsoft’s DLL search order documentation.

Fix 5: Match 32-bit and 64-bit components
A 32-bit application needs a 32-bit openvr_api.dll. A 64-bit application needs a 64-bit DLL. Windows cannot use one architecture as a substitute for the other.
Check the application’s official requirements or launcher information. You can also inspect the installation structure and the architecture of its plugins. If the error appeared after installing a plugin, mod, or wrapper, restore the original files and install the package matching the application.
Do not judge compatibility by file size or filename alone. Two files can share the same name while exposing different exports or supporting different application builds.
A 32-bit application may run on 64-bit Windows, so the operating system’s bitness does not tell you which DLL the program needs.
Fix 6: Repair the Microsoft Visual C++ dependency
Sometimes Windows reports an error involving openvr_api.dll when the actual missing component is a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime required by that DLL.
Common clues include an error naming VCRUNTIME, MSVCP, or another runtime file. A loader error that appears only after replacing the application DLL can also indicate an incompatible dependency.

- Use the x86 package for a 32-bit application.
- Use the x64 package for a 64-bit application.
- If you are uncertain, installing both official packages is normally appropriate.
The direct Microsoft packages are x86 and x64.
To repair an existing installation:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.
- Open the relevant entry’s menu.
- Select Modify.
- Select Repair, if available.
- Restart Windows and test the affected application.
Microsoft documents compatibility between applications built with Visual Studio 2015–2022 and the supported v14 Redistributable in its Visual C++ FAQ. Reinstalling Visual C++ will not repair a missing game-bundled openvr_api.dll, so verify the application as well.
Fix 7: Update or reinstall VR and graphics drivers
A graphics or headset driver problem can stop SteamVR from starting, but it is not usually the direct cause of a genuinely missing openvr_api.dll.

Use the hardware manufacturer’s official support page to install the driver for your graphics card or headset. You can also check Device Manager:

- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Repeat for relevant headset, USB, or sensor entries.
- Restart Windows.
If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, use the hardware vendor’s installer. After the driver update, repair SteamVR and verify the affected game again.

Do not begin with System File Checker when one game is missing its private DLL. Windows does not normally own openvr_api.dll.
Windows repair becomes reasonable when several unrelated applications show bad-image or DLL errors, especially after an update, disk problem, system migration, or broad security-product removal.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected applications again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. See Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions.
Repeating these commands will not recreate a third-party application DLL. If Windows reports repairs but the same game still fails, return to that game’s launcher and verify its files.
When manually tracing corrupted Windows components, it is easy to repeat SFC and DISM without knowing what changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader issues, while repairs require the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the affected game or application remains the definitive fix for its own DLL.
What not to do
Do not download a loose DLL
Avoid random DLL download sites websites. A file may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, target a different application build, or fail because the real problem is a missing dependency. It can also overwrite a legitimate mod-specific or application-specific copy.
Use the affected program’s official installer, launcher verification, or the software vendor’s official package instead.
Do not copy it to System32
openvr_api.dll normally belongs in the application’s installation tree. Copying it to System32, SysWOW64, or a global PATH can create architecture conflicts and hide the real cause.

Do not use regsvr32
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. OpenVR’s application library is not documented as a COM or ActiveX component that should be registered.
Running a command such as this is therefore not a routine repair:
regsvr32 openvr_api.dll
It usually produces another error rather than fixing the application. Microsoft describes the command in its regsvr32 documentation.
Do not enable random Windows Features
Turning on .NET Framework, legacy components, or other Windows Features does not generally restore an application-bundled OpenVR DLL. Enable a feature only when the application’s official requirements specifically identify it.
FAQ
Is openvr_api.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with Valve’s OpenVR SDK and is normally installed or redistributed by the game, application, plugin, or mod that uses it.
Is openvr_api.dll the same as SteamVR?
No. OpenVR is the API and SDK. SteamVR is Valve’s runtime and VR software distributed through Steam. An application may carry its own OpenVR DLL even when SteamVR is installed correctly.
Will reinstalling SteamVR fix the error?
Only if SteamVR itself is damaged or the error points to SteamVR files. A game can have a separate private copy, so verify or reinstall the game as well.
Should I install the 32-bit or 64-bit file?
Match the DLL to the application, not simply to Windows. A 32-bit application needs x86 components, while a 64-bit application needs x64 components.
What if the error changes to “entry point not found”?
The DLL is probably present but incompatible with the application or another component. Undo recent mod or wrapper changes, restore the original application files, and verify the installation.
What details should I record if nothing works?
Record the exact executable path, the path named for the DLL, the application’s architecture, the complete error text and code, recent updates or mods, and any antivirus quarantine result. These details distinguish a missing file from a dependency, architecture, or loader-path problem.
