mdt2sd.dll is a legacy Microsoft Design Tools library associated with Site Designer, an old Visual InterDev-era development component. It is not a normal Windows system DLL, so downloading it into System32 is usually the wrong fix.
The safest solution is to identify the application requesting the file, then repair or reinstall that application from its original trusted media. The exact installer relationship is not fully documented in current Microsoft download pages, but the strongest historical connection is Microsoft Visual InterDev and related Visual Studio 6-era tools.

What the mdt2sd.dll error means
You may see one of these messages:
- “mdt2sd.dll is missing”
- “The file mdt2sd.dll was not found”
- “This application failed to start because mdt2sd.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.”
- “Error loading mdt2sd.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because mdt2sd.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Cannot register mdt2sd.dll”
The wording can vary between Windows versions and applications. The message does not prove that Windows itself needs the file. It means that a specific program, shortcut, project, startup entry, or file association attempted to load it.
mdt2sd.dll is described as Microsoft Design Tools – Site Designer, developed by Microsoft Corporation. Site Designer was part of the type of web-development tooling included with Visual InterDev, which belonged to the Visual Studio 6-era product family.

There is no verified current Microsoft redistributable specifically named mdt2sd.dll. Installing a current Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, or Windows Update should not be treated as the primary repair.
Before fixing it, identify the program requesting the file
Do this first. It prevents you from repairing Windows when the real problem is an old development application.
Check the error window
Write down:
- The complete error text.
- The program name in the title bar.
- Whether the message appears during startup or only when opening an old project.
- Whether the message began after uninstalling Visual Studio, restoring a backup, running disk cleanup, or allowing antivirus software to quarantine a file.
If the title bar identifies the application, that application is the repair target.
Recommended Free Tools
Find the executable from a shortcut
- Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Check the Target field.
- Select Open File Location if that button is available.
- Note the application folder and executable name.
Do not copy mdt2sd.dll into that folder yet. The path tells you which parent program needs to be repaired.
Check installed applications
On Windows 11:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Visual InterDev, Visual Studio 6.0, Microsoft Design Tools, or another old development product.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the matching entry.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Apps & features.
- Search for the same product names.
You can also open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features and inspect the installed-program list.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the original development application
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the installer.
This is the most likely fix because mdt2sd.dll belongs to an old application component rather than to Windows.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTry the application repair option
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Visual InterDev, Visual Studio, or the identified parent application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Modify, Change, or Repair, if available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the application or project that previously produced the error.
If the program has its own maintenance entry in Control Panel, select it and choose Repair there.
A successful repair normally means that the original application starts without the missing-file message. Test the actual project or feature that was failing, not just the application’s shortcut.
Reinstall from trusted installation media
If Repair is unavailable:
- Back up old projects and any custom templates.
- Uninstall the damaged Visual InterDev, Visual Studio, or Design Tools installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Use the original installation CD, licensed installer, or trusted organizational software archive.
- Install the complete parent application, including Site Designer or related web-development components.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test the application.
Do not assume that a modern Visual Studio installer contains this legacy component. Current Visual Studio versions are separate products and are not verified replacements for the old Site Designer installation.
If you have an official Visual Studio 6 installation but need its service-pack documentation, Microsoft’s Visual Studio 6.0 Service Pack 6 reference may help identify the appropriate historical product materials. A service pack is not a substitute for the missing parent application.

Older installers may fail on current Windows because the application itself is unsupported.
Try these steps:
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Try an appropriate older Windows version.
- Select Run this program as an administrator.
- Select Apply, then run the installer again.
Compatibility mode does not guarantee that Visual InterDev will work correctly. If the project is important, use a supported legacy environment such as an appropriately isolated older Windows installation or virtual machine, subject to your organization’s licensing and security requirements.
Fix 2: Remove an obsolete startup entry or shortcut
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes.
If the error appears immediately after signing in, the original application may already be gone. Windows may still be trying to launch an old shortcut, scheduled task, or file association.
Check Startup apps
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for Visual InterDev, Visual Studio, Microsoft Design Tools, or an entry with an unfamiliar path.
- Right-click the entry and select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Disabling an entry is safer than deleting it immediately. If the error disappears and you confirm that the old program is no longer needed, you can remove the obsolete application through Installed apps or Control Panel.
Check the Startup folder
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
shell:startup
- Press Enter.
- Look for a shortcut pointing to the removed application.
- Right-click the shortcut and select Properties to inspect its target.
- Delete the shortcut only when you have confirmed that it is obsolete.
Repeat with:
shell:common startup
Check scheduled tasks
- Open Start and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler Library.
- Inspect tasks that run at sign-in or system startup.
- Check the Actions tab for references to the old application.
- Disable the task only after confirming its executable path and purpose.
If no installed program can be identified, an orphaned startup reference is more likely than a missing Windows component.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes.
Antivirus software may have quarantined a legacy DLL because old applications often use outdated files or installers.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for a detection involving the application folder or
mdt2sd.dll. - Review the detection name, file path, and source.
- Do not restore the file solely because the application reports it missing.
Restore a quarantined file only when all of the following are true:
- It came from the original trusted installation.
- The file path matches the parent application.
- The security product’s detection is demonstrably a false positive.
- You have verified the installer and the application’s provenance.
Otherwise, reinstall the parent application from trusted media. If the file appeared in a temporary folder, download directory, or unknown program folder, leave it quarantined and investigate the software that placed it there.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 to 40 minutes.
DISM and System File Checker are appropriate when Windows itself has broader corruption, servicing failures, or damaged protected files. They will not recreate a legacy application DLL that was never part of Windows.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Microsoft documents DISM image repair and System File Checker for repairing Windows components.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, restart and retest. If it reports that it could not repair everything, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. Persistent corruption may require reviewing the CBS log or repairing Windows through supported recovery options.
Repeating SFC and DISM cannot install Visual InterDev or restore mdt2sd.dll if the legacy application is missing.

Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the guesswork by scanning for Windows problems and showing what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while repair actions are handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the original application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the missing DLL.
Fix 5: Check architecture and application dependencies
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes.
Available third-party metadata describes mdt2sd.dll as a legacy Win32 file. Treat that as a file-database description, not as a current Microsoft compatibility guarantee.
A 32-bit application normally loads its matching 32-bit dependencies from the application’s installation directory or another approved search location. On 64-bit Windows:
C:WindowsSystem32is primarily used for 64-bit system files.C:WindowsSysWOW64contains many 32-bit Windows compatibility files.
Do not copy the DLL into both folders. Do not replace an existing file with a downloaded version. The wrong architecture or an incompatible build can produce a new error even if the original missing-file message disappears.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf the message says “The specified module could not be found,” mdt2sd.dll may exist but one of its dependencies may be missing. In that situation, copying another DLL into Windows folders usually hides the real problem. Repair the parent application and inspect its installation logs or Windows application event logs.
Fix 6: Check drivers only when the error is part of a wider hardware problem
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes.
A graphics or device-driver update is not an established direct fix for mdt2sd.dll. Use this step only if the same computer is also showing device errors, application crashes, or hardware problems.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Display adapters, Network adapters, and Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click a device with a warning icon.
- Select Properties and read the Device status message.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Use Update Driver or obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and retest the original application.
Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers are stale without manually checking each device; its free scan identifies available updates, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and a driver update will not replace the parent application that originally supplied mdt2sd.dll.
Do not use routine regsvr32 commands
regsvr32 is not a general missing-DLL repair tool. It applies only to DLLs designed for COM self-registration and exposing the required DllRegisterServer entry point.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Microsoft explains the Regsvr32 command and the self-registration requirements. There is no reliable public evidence that mdt2sd.dll should be registered this way.
Do not run:
regsvr32 mdt2sd.dll
unless the original application documentation specifically instructs you to do so. A “Cannot register mdt2sd.dll” error usually means the registration approach is inappropriate, the file is the wrong architecture, or a dependency is missing.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Avoid DLL download sites websites and search results offering isolated copies of mdt2sd.dll. A downloaded file can have:
- The wrong version.
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- Missing dependencies.
- No trustworthy provenance.
- Malware or unwanted modifications.
- A filename that was renamed to look legitimate.
Even a clean replacement may not fix the parent application’s damaged registry entries, missing companion files, installer state, or startup configuration. Microsoft’s dynamic-link library troubleshooting guidance explains why DLL loading depends on more than the filename alone.

The safe sources are the original Microsoft installation media, a trusted organizational software archive, or a repaired installation of the parent application. Do not treat a current Visual C++ package, Windows Update, DirectX, or .NET as a verified source for this specific file.
Causes and the appropriate fix
| Likely cause | Best response |
|---|---|
| Visual InterDev or related tools were partially removed | Repair or reinstall the complete parent application |
| An old shortcut or startup task remains | Disable or remove the obsolete reference |
| Antivirus quarantined the file | Review the detection and reinstall unless provenance is certain |
| A wrong architecture or dependency was supplied | Restore the application’s matching files through its installer |
| Windows has broader component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| The application is incompatible with modern Windows | Use a controlled legacy environment or migrate the project |
If the original installation media is unavailable
First, preserve the project files and record the executable path shown in the error. Then check whether the application is still installed and whether its uninstall entry offers Repair.
If the application is no longer installed, do not obtain the DLL separately. Look for the original licensed media, an internal software repository, or a backup containing the complete installer. If the project must continue running but the old software cannot be restored, use an appropriately isolated legacy environment or migrate the project to a supported development tool.
System Restore may help only when a suitable restore point predates the deletion and the original application was installed through a restore-aware setup. It is not a reliable way to reconstruct an old application installation.

FAQ
Is mdt2sd.dll part of Windows?
No verified evidence identifies it as a normal Windows component. It is associated with Microsoft Design Tools and the legacy Site Designer functionality used by Visual InterDev-era software.
Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?
Usually not. mdt2sd.dll is not identified as a current Microsoft C/C++ runtime file. Repair the application that requests it instead.
Can I copy mdt2sd.dll into System32?
Do not do this. The file is a legacy application DLL, and copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can create architecture, version, and security problems.
Is mdt2sd.dll 32-bit?
Available third-party metadata describes it as a Win32 file, but this is not a current Microsoft-confirmed compatibility record. Let the original installer place the matching file.
Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found when the file exists?
The DLL may depend on another missing library, or the application may be loading the wrong copy. Repair the parent application and inspect its exact executable path rather than adding more DLL files.
Should I run regsvr32 mdt2sd.dll?
No, not routinely. regsvr32 works only for self-registering DLLs, and no reliable public evidence establishes that mdt2sd.dll requires registration.
What if the message appears at every startup?
Inspect Task Manager > Startup apps, the Startup folders, and Task Scheduler. An old shortcut or task may still point to an uninstalled Visual InterDev-era program. Disable it after confirming its path and purpose.
What if none of my installed programs uses this file?
Treat the message as an orphaned startup reference or suspicious software residue. Identify the executable path before restoring anything, and scan the system with your installed security software.
