MediaMTX vs SRS for Sending a Continuous Stream to YouTube

MediaMTX has the more explicit documented YouTube forwarding path; SRS users should verify RTMPS behavior for their exact release. Here is how to configure and test either relay.

For a self-hosted relay that forwards a continuous stream to YouTube, MediaMTX is the clearer starting point: its documentation includes a native YouTube forwarding example using RTMPS. SRS supports RTMP ingest and forwarding, but the SRS forwarding examples reviewed do not provide an equally direct YouTube RTMPS recipe. That is a difference in documented setup—not proof that MediaMTX performs better. For a stream that should keep running without a home computer or self-managed relay, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative.

Which should you choose for sending a continuous stream to YouTube?

  • Choose MediaMTX if you want a self-hosted relay and value a documented, path-level YouTube destination example. You still need to supply the current ingest URL and private stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, and verify the outgoing stream in YouTube.
  • Consider SRS if it already fits your RTMP infrastructure or you need its forwarding and cluster patterns. Verify the exact SRS release and its RTMPS behavior with a test stream; the cited examples do not establish a ready-made YouTube RTMPS configuration.
  • Do not choose between them on claimed performance. The documentation comparison does not establish which uses less CPU or memory, reconnects more reliably, or delivers better uptime for a single continuous YouTube stream.

This is a comparison of documented configuration paths, not a hands-on benchmark. MediaMTX forwarding guidance supplies a direct destination pattern; the SRS RTMP page is v7 and marked unstable, while the forwarding reference is v5. Check the documentation for the specific release you intend to run.

What MediaMTX and SRS do

MediaMTX

MediaMTX describes itself as a ready-to-use, zero-dependency live media server and proxy. It can accept and route streams over protocols including SRT, WebRTC, RTSP, RTMP, HLS, MPEG-TS, and RTP. Its documented features also include forwarding, recording, authentication, metrics, hot-reloading configuration, and a single executable for Linux, Windows, and macOS. These capabilities make it useful as a relay between an encoder or other source and a destination.

SRS

SRS documents RTMP ingest from encoders such as OBS or FFmpeg and server-side forwarding of published RTMP streams to configured destinations. Its v7 RTMP documentation notes that RTMP is commonly used to publish from OBS to platforms including YouTube; that general observation does not confirm that a particular SRS configuration will publish to YouTube using RTMPS. SRS forwarding documentation shows static destinations and a dynamic mode in which an HTTP backend returns RTMP URLs.

How the documented YouTube forwarding paths compare

Decision point MediaMTX SRS
Direct YouTube example in the documentation reviewed Yes. The forwarding guide shows a YouTube URL and stream-key pattern, and recommends RTMPS for encryption. No direct YouTube RTMPS recipe in the forwarding examples reviewed. The documentation establishes RTMP publishing and forwarding to RTMP destinations.
Incoming stream role Accepts streams over multiple protocols, then routes or forwards them. Accepts RTMP publishers. Check the intended input path against the exact release and deployment.
Forwarding configuration shown Path-level forward destination, including an RTMP(S) destination pattern. Vhost-level forwarding; static examples use destinations in host-and-port form, and dynamic forwarding uses a backend returning RTMP URLs.
Setup implication for this workflow The direct example makes the documented YouTube setup more explicit. Expect to validate the destination URL, TLS, stream-key handling, and version-specific configuration yourself.
What documentation does not establish Comparative uptime, reconnect reliability, CPU, RAM, throughput, or delivery success. Comparative uptime, reconnect reliability, CPU, RAM, throughput, or delivery success.

The setup implication is an inference from the documentation examples, not a comparative usability test. A host-and-port example alone does not prove that a destination supports YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint, path, key syntax, or certificate validation.

Set up a MediaMTX forward to YouTube

  1. Prepare the source stream. Configure your encoder or upstream source to publish to a MediaMTX path, such as mypath. Confirm that the incoming stream contains both audio and video before troubleshooting the destination.
  2. Get the destination details from YouTube. Open YouTube Live Control Room for the intended broadcast and copy the current stream URL and stream key. The ingest URL can vary; do not assume the example endpoint in a server guide is still current.
  3. Add a path-level forward entry. In MediaMTX’s configuration, point the path receiving your source at YouTube. The documented pattern is:
    paths:
      mypath:
        forward:
          - dest: rtmps://CURRENT_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL#STREAM_KEY

Replace the destination with the current RTMPS ingest URL from YouTube, and replace STREAM_KEY with the channel’s key. In this MediaMTX syntax, # separates the URL from the key. Treat the key as a secret: do not expose it in public logs, repositories, screenshots, or shared configuration examples.

    • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  4. Apply the configuration and publish the source. Use the configuration reload or restart procedure for the MediaMTX release you installed. Publish to the configured path and check server logs for connection or forwarding errors. Exact commands and service-management steps depend on how you installed and run MediaMTX.
  5. Verify at YouTube before relying on the relay. Check Live Control Room’s stream health and confirm that both audio and video arrive. MediaMTX warns that YouTube silently rejects a video-only stream, so a successful incoming video feed alone is not proof of a valid YouTube stream.

If the forwarding job needs a transformation or filter that MediaMTX’s native forward feature does not cover, its documentation points to FFmpeg for those cases. That adds another process and configuration to operate; confirm that the resulting output still meets YouTube’s ingest settings.

What to verify before configuring SRS for YouTube

  1. Pin the SRS release. The cited RTMP guidance is for v7 and marked unstable; the forwarding reference is v5. Do not copy a v5 forwarding example into a v7 deployment without checking the matching documentation.
  2. Establish the forwarding destination syntax. SRS documents vhost-level forwarding, with static destinations and a dynamic option backed by an HTTP service that returns RTMP URLs. Confirm how the chosen release expects the destination and stream key to be represented.
  3. Confirm RTMPS support end to end. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Validate TLS connection behavior, the current ingest URL, certificate handling, and key delivery for your SRS version rather than assuming an RTMP host-and-port example is interchangeable.
  4. Run an actual test broadcast. Confirm that SRS accepts the source, forwards it, and that YouTube reports healthy video and audio. Keep the stream key private while inspecting configuration and logs.

The available SRS examples establish forwarding to RTMP destinations, not a verified SRS-to-YouTube RTMPS recipe. Treat a working direct configuration as something to demonstrate in your own version-specific test, not an assumption.

Use YouTube’s ingest settings for the outgoing stream

These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not MediaMTX or SRS performance specifications. YouTube Help recommends RTMPS, supports RTMP/RTMPS, and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance.

Video format and frame rate YouTube-published minimum video bitrate YouTube-published recommended video bitrate
H.264, 720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
H.264, 1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
H.264, 1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
AV1 or H.265, 1080p at 30 fps 4 Mbps 10 Mbps

These are YouTube Help’s published encoder video bitrate values on the page accessed in 2026. They are not measurements of relay throughput, total upload-bandwidth guarantees, or a comparison of MediaMTX and SRS. Test with representative motion and audio, check the source connection’s upload capacity, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test.

Troubleshoot a continuous YouTube relay

  • YouTube does not show a healthy incoming stream: check the current ingest URL, whether RTMPS is used as intended, the stream key, and the forwarding destination syntax for the server version. Keep the key secret while checking logs and configuration.
  • Video is present but the stream is rejected or incomplete: verify that the incoming source includes an audio track as well as video. MediaMTX specifically warns that YouTube silently rejects a video-only stream.
  • The server accepts the source but YouTube receives nothing: distinguish source ingest from destination forwarding. Check the relay’s forwarding logs, configured path or vhost, destination URL, outbound network access, and YouTube stream health.
  • SRS forwarding works to another RTMP server but not YouTube: that does not establish RTMPS compatibility. Confirm TLS, the YouTube URL and key format, and behavior in the exact SRS release you are using.
  • The stream starts but quality or stability is poor: compare the encoder’s codec, CBR bitrate, keyframe interval, and frame rate with YouTube’s current guidance. Check upload speed and use YouTube’s stream-health feedback; a relay cannot compensate for a source or network that cannot sustain the configured output.
  • A long-running stream stops or drops: the documentation reviewed does not establish comparative recovery behavior for either server. Inspect server and network logs, verify whether the source is still publishing, and test the restart and reconnect path before depending on the setup continuously.

When a self-hosted relay is the wrong fit

MediaMTX and SRS are server software: with either approach, you operate the host, network path, configuration, and recovery process. If you want uploaded videos to loop on a YouTube channel without leaving a computer running at home or administering a relay, StreamNeo is a cloud service for YouTube-only continuous streaming. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. It does not broadcast a camera feed.

Or let it run in the cloud

  • Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream continues from the cloud when your computer is off.
  • One flat price per slot covers uploaded quality up to 4K at 60 fps, with no re-encoding or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card; it is one free day per account.

Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start the free day at StreamNeo registration.
