Valve’s three new devices serve different jobs: Steam Controller is a gamepad, Steam Machine is a living-room PC running SteamOS, and Steam Frame is a VR headset that can run some games locally or stream PC content. They were announced in November 2025, but the original early-2026 shipping plan is now outdated: later reports say the Controller launched in spring 2026, the Machine in summer, and Frame preorders opened in September. Availability, delivery timing, and prices can vary by region.
What are Valve’s new Steam devices?
Valve announced the Steam Controller, Steam Machine, and Steam Frame on November 12, 2025, as additions to its hardware family alongside Steam Deck. The company said the devices were designed to work together while remaining open platforms: “All work together, and all are optimized for Steam while continuing to operate as open platforms.” That describes the family’s intent, not a requirement to buy or use all three together. Valve’s announcement named the US, Canada, UK, EU, and Australia, along with Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Taiwan through KOMODO, as planned markets; that announcement is not a guarantee of current availability.
| Device | What it is | Does it need a PC? |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Controller | A separate gamepad for playing games. | Not a PC; the cited material does not specify every supported connection or device. |
| Steam Machine | A compact living-room PC running SteamOS. | It is itself a PC. |
| Steam Frame | A VR headset with local play for optimized games and PC streaming. | No for games optimized to run locally; a PC can be used as a streaming source. |
Steam Machine: a compact SteamOS PC for the living room
Steam Machine is a computer intended for a TV or other living-room setup, rather than a conventional console. Valve’s listed specifications include a semi-custom AMD Zen 4 CPU with 6 cores and 12 threads, semi-custom AMD RDNA 3 graphics with 28 compute units, 16GB of DDR5 system memory, and 8GB of GDDR6 video memory. Storage options are 512GB or 2TB NVMe SSDs. It also has a microSD slot, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, DisplayPort 1.4, and HDMI 2.0. Valve’s Steam Machine page says owners can install their own applications or another operating system, so it is not limited to the SteamOS interface.
The Machine includes a built-in wireless adapter that can pair directly with up to four Steam Controllers. This is a specific feature of the Machine; it does not establish compatibility details for every other controller or accessory.

Price and reservation timing
Tom’s Hardware reported a US starting price of $1,049 for the 512GB Steam Machine in an interview published July 6, 2026. On July 29, the outlet reported Valve’s update that everyone in the Machine reservation queue was expected to receive a purchase opportunity by the end of 2026. That was a queue estimate at the time, not a current delivery guarantee; check Valve’s listing for updated regional pricing and status. In the interview, Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais said, “I think the value of the Steam Machine is inherently tied to the value of your Steam library in a lot of ways.” That is a useful way to think about the purchase: the library you already own and the Machine’s PC flexibility matter alongside its hardware price. Steam Frame: standalone-capable VR and PC streaming
Steam Frame is a VR headset that supports two distinct uses: running games optimized for the headset locally, and streaming PC content wirelessly. “Standalone” does not mean that every Steam game is designed to run on the headset itself. The September 2026 review lists a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, 16GB LPDDR5X memory, 256GB or 1TB storage, microSD expansion, and LCD displays with 2160 × 2160 resolution per eye. Refresh rates range from 72Hz to 120Hz, with 144Hz described as experimental. Road to VR’s September 2026 report and Tom’s Hardware’s September review cover the headset’s launch and capabilities.

Frame prices, reservations, and accessories
Road to VR reported US prices of $1,059 for the 256GB model and $1,299 for the 1TB model on September 14, 2026. The report said prices differed in Canada, Europe, the UK, Australia, and Poland, with VAT included where applicable. Its reservation process was randomized rather than first-come-first-served: registration for a model closed September 17 at 10 a.m. Pacific, and the first purchase emails were expected September 18. Those dates have passed, so a prospective buyer should use the current Steam listing and regional queue information rather than treating that enrollment window as open.
The same report listed US launch accessory prices of $29 for a power supply, $59 for an Ergonomic Accessories Kit, and $49 for an Accessory Replacement Kit. The ergonomic kit included controller hand straps and doors, a headset top strap, and an extended light blocker; the replacement kit included a face gasket, head cushion, and light blocker. These are reported launch prices, not a promise of current price or stock in every market. The microSD slot is useful for expandable storage, but no particular card has been established as tested or endorsed here.

Steam Controller: a separate gamepad
The Steam Controller is the family’s standalone gamepad, not a handheld PC or a VR accessory by definition. Tom’s Hardware’s September 2026 coverage describes it as having launched in spring 2026. The available reporting does not establish its exact current price or regional inventory, so consult Valve’s live store for whether it can be bought where you live. The Machine’s built-in adapter supports up to four Steam Controllers paired directly to it.

- MODERNIZED DESIGN — Experience the modernized design of the XBOX Wireless Controller with sculpted surfaces and updated geometry that enhances comfort and control during long gaming sessions.
- PRECISION PERFORMANCE — Stay on target with a hybrid D-pad and textured grips on triggers, bumpers, and back case for improved accuracy and handling.
- SHARE BUTTON: Seamlessly capture and share content such as screenshots, recordings, and more with the new Share button.
- VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY — Connect via USB-C for plug-and-play on console and PC, or quickly pair and switch between supported devices with XBOX Wireless and Bluetooth support.
- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
- Choose Steam Controller if what you need is a gamepad. Its current local price and stock need checking.
- Choose Steam Machine if you want a compact SteamOS PC for a TV and value access to your Steam library alongside the option to install other applications or an operating system.
- Choose Steam Frame if you want VR and value both local play for optimized titles and wireless PC streaming. Check whether the games you intend to play are suitable for local headset use or require a PC streaming setup.
Storage is another practical divider: Machine buyers choose between 512GB and 2TB SSD configurations; Frame buyers choose 256GB or 1TB and can expand with microSD. Price comparisons also need context: regional taxes and availability differ, and the Steam Machine’s value depends partly on the games and PC uses a buyer already has.
What changed after the original announcement?
Valve initially said the products were planned to begin shipping in early 2026. Tom’s Hardware reported in June 2026 that Machine and Frame had moved to a summer shipping window; later September coverage reported the Machine’s launch and Frame reservations, while the Controller was reported launched in spring. These milestones are historical reporting, not a reliable statement of what can ship today. For present prices, queue status, stock, or delivery estimates, check Valve’s current product pages for your region.
There has also been a software update since launch. PC Gamer reported on October 2, 2026 that a Valve update improved Steam Frame power efficiency and battery life by up to 12%, with the result depending on frame rate and content. The report also noted eye-tracking accessibility improvements, controller-binding fixes, better streaming reliability, and wireless-adapter connectivity fixes. The up-to figure is not a guaranteed runtime increase for every game or setting. PC Gamer’s update report
