In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Mega Stones come from story and Rogue Mega rewards, Quasartico Inc.’s Mega Shard exchange, the Stone Emporium, special distributions, and—if you own the Mega Dimension DLC—its missions and Hyperspace portals. To Mega Evolve, your Trainer needs a Key Stone and the eligible Pokémon must hold its matching Mega Stone. The route depends on the stone: some unlock during the story, some require postgame battles, and dated Ranked Battle or Mystery Gift rewards may not currently be claimable.
How Mega Evolution and Mega Stones work
The Pokémon Company explains that a Trainer’s Key Stone resonates with a Mega Stone held by a Pokémon, allowing Mega Evolution. The transformation is temporary and can change a Pokémon’s appearance and, in some cases, its type. A stone only works with its corresponding eligible Pokémon; owning a stone does not by itself unlock the Trainer’s Key Stone or the transformation.
The game’s main acquisition routes are story rewards, the Quasartico Inc. exchange, and the Stone Emporium. Special Ranked Battle rewards and Mystery Gifts have separate availability conditions. Mega Dimension adds another set of missions, encounters, and portal rewards.
Base-game stones earned through story missions
The following story and Rogue Mega rewards are listed in PowerPyx’s October 15, 2025 base-game location guide. Mission numbering and names below reflect that guide.

Quasartico Inc. exchanges Mega Shards for stones as the relevant options unlock with story progress. Mega Shards are associated with breaking Mega Crystal clusters around Lumiose City. Ranked Battle rewards and Mystery Gift stones
Kalos starter stones from Ranked Battle
The Pokémon Company’s September 12, 2025 Ranked Battle announcement listed Greninjite for Season 1, Delphoxite for Season 2, and Chesnaughtite for Season 3, awarded for promotion. The announcement said these stones were not normally obtainable through regular gameplay, that a player could hold no more than one of each, and that future seasonal redistribution was planned. A March 5, 2026 announcement described Season 8 as a special season with Mega Shards exchangeable for useful items, including Mega Stones; it does not establish which rewards or exchanges are live on October 8, 2026. Check the in-game Ranked Battle news and exchange before planning around any of these stones.
Mewtwonite X and Mewtwonite Y
A December 2, 2025 official notice described a Mystery Gift distribution of Mewtwonite X and Mewtwonite Y. Its instructions were to choose “Get via Internet” in Mystery Gift; internet access and a linked Nintendo Account were required, and the feature became accessible after approximately one hour of play. The notice supported both physical and digital game versions. It also described an additional Mewtwo side mission at Lysandre Café after completing the main story. Because this was a dated distribution, verify in the game whether the gifts can still be claimed before relying on the route.

Mega Dimension DLC stones and Mega Evolutions
Mega Dimension is additional story content playable after the main story. The official overview confirms Mega Raichu X and Mega Raichu Y, which require different Mega Stones, and showcases Mega Chimecho, Mega Baxcalibur, Mega Zeraora, Mega Lucario Z, and Mega Garchomp Z. The DLC guide published by Nintendo Life on December 17, 2025 describes the following example routes; portal appearances and mission prerequisites mean that some rewards require further progression rather than a single fixed pickup.
| Stone or Pokémon/form | Reported DLC route |
|---|---|
| Raichunite X and Raichunite Y | Side Mission 139 in a random yellow Hyperspace portal, with earlier side-mission prerequisites reported by the guide. |
| Chimechite, Scovillainite, Golisopite, Golurkite, and Glimmoranite | Rogue Mega encounters in randomly appearing yellow Hyperspace portals of specified star levels. |
| Zeraorite | The “Raging Lightning” mission. |
| Lucarionite Z | A follow-on mission after the relevant earlier DLC progression. |
| Absolite Z, Staraptite, Tatsugirinite, Meowsticite, Heatranite, and Darkrainite | Rogue Mega battles or main Hyperspace Lumiose Survey missions, as reported by the guide. |
| Crabominite | “Rogue Mega Showdown.” |
| Magearnite | After “Restarting Magearnite.” |
The same DLC guide also discusses returning Primal Kyogre, Primal Groudon, Mega Rayquaza, and Mega Latias/Latios, with post-credits or side-mission gates. Its route wording for some of these entries is inconsistent, so confirm the exact mission and stone name in-game rather than treating a disputed guide detail as definitive.

How to use this guide to find a particular stone
- Identify the Pokémon and form. Some Pokémon have more than one Mega form and therefore need the matching stone—for example, Mega Raichu X and Y use different stones.
- Check the route category. Use the story table for mission rewards, the Quasartico section for shard exchange unlocks, and the Stone Emporium section for shop options.
- Check progression before searching Lumiose. Several options unlock only at later missions; Floettite and some DLC or special rewards require post-story progress.
- Check limited-distribution status separately. Ranked Battle rewards and Mystery Gifts are tied to dated announcements or claim windows, not ordinary exploration. Confirm their present availability in-game.
- If the stone is DLC-specific, confirm Mega Dimension access. The DLC content described here is post-story and may gate acquisition behind a mission chain, Rogue Mega battle, or random Hyperspace portal.
Why stone totals differ between guides
Published counts are snapshots, not a reliable current total for the combined game and DLC. PowerPyx’s October 15, 2025 initial base-game guide counted 62 stones. Nintendo Life’s December 10, 2025 base-game guide reported 72 Mega Evolutions. Those numbers describe different guides published on different dates and count different things; they should not be combined into a current total or treated as a complete base-game-plus-DLC roster. The location list above likewise preserves the specific routes reported in the cited guides rather than presenting an unsupported claim that every stone is catalogued here.
