TerraOnion’s MegaSD lets compatible Genesis and Mega Drive systems run Sega CD/Mega-CD games from disc-image files on a microSD card, without using the original optical drive. It is more than a storage cartridge: FPGA hardware recreates essential Sega CD functions. Compatibility depends on the console and add-ons, and the performance findings below come from a 2020 review rather than current independent testing.
What the MegaSD does
The original Sega CD connected to a Genesis through its cartridge connector and included its own processor and memory. MegaSD puts an FPGA-based recreation of Sega CD hardware in a plug-in cartridge, then loads disc images from microSD instead of reading a physical disc. TerraOnion describes it as a complete FPGA recreation of Mega-CD/Sega CD hardware; Ars Technica explains the hardware approach in its March 2020 hands-on report.
That distinction matters: MegaSD is not simply extra storage for large Genesis games. It is designed to reproduce the Sega CD hardware role as well as provide the game data. It also plays Genesis/Mega Drive and Master System games, with additional features for those systems.
Compatibility depends on the exact setup
Ars Technica reported using MegaSD with original Genesis hardware and an Analogue Mega Sg. TerraOnion lists compatibility with original systems and Mega Sg, and also lists the Nomad with a modification for CD audio. These claims do not establish compatibility with every console revision, adapter, or combination.

There is a specific caveat for 32X owners. TerraOnion advertises 32X game support when a 32X add-on is present, but Ars Technica reported that its tested MegaSD setup did not function when connected through a Sega 32X adapter. The review attributed the problem to the Genesis managing both cartridge slots. Treat the manufacturer’s broader feature claim and the review’s tested limitation as distinct: check your exact hardware arrangement before relying on a 32X setup.
What the 2020 performance report found
In its 2020 hands-on testing on original Genesis hardware, Ars Technica reported reduced CD loading times, gameplay it characterized as identical, and CD audio that was nearly identical. Those are findings from that review, not a guarantee for every game or a current independent benchmark.
Some games still pause to load because the pause is part of how the original game was coded. The review noted slight, noticeable improvements in NBA Jam and NHL ’94, but warned that MegaSD does not eliminate every wait. In the author’s words: “Don’t buy this expecting CD seek times to be obliterated; depending on the game in question, you may face a default pause-to-load no matter what, owing to how the original games were coded.”
Features beyond Sega CD playback
- Genesis/Mega Drive and Master System games: MegaSD also works as a flash cartridge for these systems.
- Save states: Ars Technica and TerraOnion list save states for Genesis/Mega Drive cartridge games. The 2020 review explicitly says save states do not apply to Sega CD games.
- Save data: TerraOnion lists per-game Sega CD backup RAM and cartridge RAM stored on microSD.
- 32X: The manufacturer lists support with the add-on, subject to the configuration caveat above.
Disc images, microSD, and legal considerations
The practical setup described by Ars Technica is to create an image from your own Sega CD disc using a computer optical drive, then transfer the resulting files to microSD. The vendor manual says users provide their own microSD card, BIOS, ROMs, and CD images. The available descriptions do not establish precise current image-format requirements, so consult the current manual for setup specifics.

Having a disc image does not make every way of obtaining or sharing game files lawful. Ars Technica noted that Sega CD discs did not ship with copy protection, but that is not blanket legal advice about copying or distributing games. The report also discussed fan-made MD+ files that add audio—identified there as 44.1 kHz audio—and described copyrighted-audio projects as a legal gray area. Do not assume those files are authorized; making your own modifications was the safer approach in the author’s view. Laws vary by jurisdiction.

The €232 price (about US$261) cited by Ars Technica was the product’s price in its March 29, 2020 report, not a current quote. TerraOnion’s shop listing reported MegaSD out of stock when checked for this article; inventory can change. Confirm current availability, price, firmware, and compatibility directly with the TerraOnion MegaSD product page and official shop before making a purchase decision.
Is it a sensible alternative to an original Sega CD?
MegaSD is most relevant if you want Sega CD games on compatible hardware but do not want to depend on a working optical drive. An original add-on may be preferable if you value the physical hardware and discs, while MegaSD replaces disc playback with image files and a microSD card. There is no established current price or reliability comparison that makes one option universally better.
Before choosing, verify the condition and repair prospects of any original drive you are considering, your exact console and 32X arrangement, the image and microSD setup, and whether MegaSD is currently available. Its Genesis save states and support for Sega CD backup RAM may also matter, but they are separate features with different game coverage.
