TimeSplitters did not return as a released game from the studio behind its announced revival. Deep Silver said in 2021 that it was reforming Free Radical Design to make a new entry; retrospective reporting says the studio closed in late 2023 amid Embracer Group restructuring. That closure is the catch—but it does not prove the franchise is permanently cancelled.
What the 2021 TimeSplitters revival actually promised
In 2021, Deep Silver announced that it was reforming Free Radical Design, the studio associated with the original TimeSplitters games, to work on a new series entry. Digitally Downloaded’s 2021 report covered that plan. It was an announcement of intended development, not confirmation of a completed game, release date, or playable build.

Why the return hit a catch
A 2024 retrospective reports that the reformed Free Radical Design closed in late 2023 amid Embracer Group restructuring. The closure explains why that studio’s announced revival did not arrive as a released game from its team. Bounding Into Comics’ retrospective also discusses earlier TimeSplitters project history, but the earlier TimeSplitters 4 project should not be confused with the later plan for the revived studio.
The reported studio closure does not establish that the TimeSplitters franchise itself was formally cancelled, that its rights changed hands, or that another team cannot make a game. The sources available here do not confirm whether a different owner or developer has since restarted or newly announced a project, so the 2021 revival alone cannot establish the franchise’s current development status.
