You do not need a computer to get most Meta Quest 2 games. The normal route is the Meta Horizon Store, which you can use inside the headset, in the Meta Horizon phone app, or from a web browser. After you claim or buy a standalone Quest game, it downloads directly to the headset over Wi-Fi.
A computer is required only for PC VR games, such as titles played through Meta Quest Link, Air Link, or SteamVR. Those games run on the computer rather than directly on the Quest 2.

What you need before downloading a game
- A Meta account signed in on the headset
- A Quest 2 paired with the Meta Horizon app on an iPhone or Android phone
- A working Wi-Fi connection
- Enough free storage on the headset
- Any required headset or account updates installed
If the headset is second-hand, it may still be connected to another person’s account. A factory reset may be necessary. Games and purchases do not automatically transfer between unrelated Meta accounts.
Recommended Free Tools
Meta’s software and older help pages may still use the name “Oculus Quest 2” or “Oculus app.” The current mobile app is generally called Meta Horizon. Menu names and button locations can change with updates, so look for the relevant store, search, purchase, and install controls rather than relying on an identical screen layout.
#1 Best Overall
The easiest way: download a game on the Quest 2
- Put on the headset and connect it to Wi-Fi.
- Open Store from the headset menu.
- Search for a game or browse the available categories.
- Open the game’s product page.
- Select Get, Free, the displayed price, or the equivalent current button.
- Confirm the download or purchase if prompted.
- Wait for the game to download and install.
- Open the App Library and launch the game.
For free-to-start games, “free” may mean that the initial download costs nothing while optional purchases, subscriptions, or paid content are available inside the game. A button labelled as a demo, trial, or subscription access is not necessarily the same as permanently owning the full game.
Examples of free or free-to-start titles listed as Quest 2-compatible in a third-party catalog snapshot checked on August 16, 2026 included Gorilla Tag, Gym Class, VRChat, and PokerStars/Vegas Infinite. Availability and Quest 2 compatibility can change, so confirm each title on the live Meta store page before downloading.
How to buy a paid Quest 2 game
- Open the Meta Horizon Store in the headset, app, or browser.
- Open the game’s product page.
- Check the supported headsets and platform information. Do not assume that every new Quest game runs on Quest 2.
- Select the displayed price.
- Complete payment using a payment method available to the Meta account.
- Select Install, or allow the purchase to begin downloading.
- Launch the game from the App Library when installation finishes.
Prices, taxes, discounts, bundles, and availability vary by country and date. A third-party catalog snapshot showed representative prices including Beat Saber at $29.99, GORN and Contractors at $19.99, and BONELAB at $39.99, but these figures are not guaranteed current prices in every region.
Buying a standalone Quest version does not automatically buy the PC VR version. A game may have separate Quest and PC listings, separate features, and separate technical requirements.

Install a game from the Meta Horizon phone app
- Install and open the Meta Horizon app.
- Sign in with the same Meta account used on the Quest 2.
- Open the store or search for the game.
- Choose Get or purchase the game.
- If the app offers a device selector, choose the Quest 2.
- Leave the headset connected to Wi-Fi and powered on or in standby.
- Check the headset’s App Library after the download completes.
Remote installation may not start immediately if the headset is completely powered off, offline, incorrectly paired, signed into another account, incompatible with the game, or short on storage. The exact app navigation can vary by version; consult the Meta Quest Help Center if the store or device controls are missing.
Install from the Meta website
- Go to the official Meta Horizon Store and sign in.
- Open the game’s page.
- Confirm that Quest 2 is listed as a supported headset.
- Select Get or purchase the game.
- Use the available device-install option, or finish the installation from the headset.
Use official Meta domains when signing in or downloading. Search results can include sites with similar “Oculus” or “Quest” names that are not Meta services.
Where to find an installed game
Open the Quest 2 App Library. Use its search or filter controls if available, then look under installed apps or all apps. A game that has been claimed but not yet downloaded may appear with a download icon rather than a playable launch button.

Do you need a computer?
No for ordinary standalone Quest games. These games are installed on the headset, use its own hardware, and can be played without a gaming PC once downloaded. You still need internet access for downloading, updates, account verification, and games that require an online connection.

Yes for PC VR games. In that case, the game is installed on a compatible Windows gaming PC and displayed in the headset through a wired or wireless connection.
| Game type | Where it runs | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Standalone Quest game | Quest 2 | Headset, Meta account, Wi-Fi for downloading |
| PC VR game | Compatible gaming PC | PC VR software plus Link, Air Link, or another supported connection |
| SteamVR game | Compatible gaming PC | Steam, SteamVR, a VR-capable PC, and a headset connection |

Quest games versus PC VR games
Standalone and PC versions are different software products. The PC version may have better graphics or more complex simulation, but it requires a capable computer and a reliable wired or wireless connection. The standalone version is simpler to use and does not require a PC after installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsQuest and PC libraries are also distinct. A purchase made on the standalone store will not automatically appear as a free PC purchase.

What Cross-Buy means
Cross-Buy means a developer has made one purchase grant access to both the standalone Quest version and the PC VR version. It is title-specific and developer-controlled; availability on both platforms does not prove that a game supports Cross-Buy.
Before buying again:
- Check the Quest product page for supported platforms or version information.
- Open the PC listing while signed into the same Meta account.
- Look for an install or free-claim option instead of another purchase price.
- If the entitlement is unclear, check the developer’s official product information or Meta support.
The two versions may still have different graphics, saves, features, downloadable content, or hardware requirements. DLC and in-game currency can have their own compatibility rules.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.App Lab and SideQuest
The main Meta store is the best route for most beginners. App Lab is used for some experimental, early-access, or less prominently listed Quest software. It is still separate from the conventional store experience.
SideQuest is a third-party platform for experimental apps, indie projects, utilities, and content that is not available through the main storefront. It is not official Meta store software and should not be treated as a replacement for the normal purchase process.
Best Value
- Experience total immersion with 3D positional audio, hand tracking and easy-to-use controllers working together to make virtual worlds feel real.
- Explore an expanding universe of over 500 titles across gaming, fitness, social/multiplayer and entertainment, including exclusive releases and totally unique VR experiences.
- Enjoy fast, smooth gameplay and immersive graphics as high-speed action unfolds around you with a fast processor and immersive graphics.
- Travel universes in blockbuster fantasies, scare yourself witless in horror adventures or squad up with friends to save the universe.
- Come together in incredible social spaces and multiplayer arenas as you take in live events with friends and family, find your new workout crew or join adventures with fellow players.
Some SideQuest installation methods require developer mode, USB authorization, a phone, or a computer. Requirements vary by title and method. To use it more safely:
- Use the official SideQuest website.
- Prefer reputable projects with clear developer information and Quest 2 compatibility.
- Review requested permissions.
- Do not install pirated games or modified copies.
- Understand that third-party software may not be supported by Meta.
- Back up important data where possible.
Subscriptions are not the same as ownership
Meta’s subscription offering, currently described on the Meta Quest+ page, can provide access to a rotating catalog or other benefits. Catalog access generally depends on maintaining the subscription and the current terms. It is not automatically the same as permanently buying every included game.
Monthly claim or redemption features, when offered, can have different ownership rules from games that are merely available in a rotating catalog. A subscription also does not guarantee access to every PC VR version or a Cross-Buy entitlement. Check the live subscription terms before joining.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix a game that will not download
The game was bought but is missing
- Confirm that the headset, app, and browser use the same Meta account.
- Check the App Library’s filters and uninstalled-app section.
- Confirm that the transaction completed and retain the order receipt.
- Check that you bought the Quest version rather than a PC-only version.
- Verify that the title still supports Quest 2 and has not been delisted or replaced.
The download is stuck
- Confirm that Wi-Fi works and move closer to the router if necessary.
- Pause and resume the download.
- Restart the headset.
- Check available storage.
- Open the game’s store page and retry the installation.
- Install pending headset software updates.
- If account synchronization appears broken, sign out of and back into the mobile app.
- Contact Meta support with the order receipt if the purchase still does not appear.
Installation can require temporary working space in addition to the final installed game size. Leave a reasonable storage buffer instead of treating the displayed game size as an exact requirement.
The app says installed but will not launch
The installation may still be completing, the game may require an internet connection or separate login, or you may have installed a PC VR title that cannot run natively on Quest 2. Other possibilities include outdated headset software, Quest 2 incompatibility, or an unsupported app.
The PC listing asks for payment again
Do not buy it again immediately. The original purchase may have been for the standalone version, the developer may not support Cross-Buy, the PC app may use another Meta account, or the PC listing may belong to a different storefront. Check the game’s Cross-Buy status first.
Choosing the right way to build a library
| Your priority | Best route | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Simple setup without a computer | Official Meta Horizon Store | Only standalone-compatible titles run directly on Quest 2 |
| Free or experimental software | Free store titles, App Lab, or SideQuest | Quality, support, and installation requirements vary |
| Best graphics and simulation depth | PC VR through Link or Air Link | Requires a capable PC and stable connection |
| Existing Steam VR library | SteamVR with Link or Air Link | Requires PC hardware and additional setup |
| Access to a rotating catalog | Meta Quest+ | Subscription access is not always permanent ownership |
The safest first purchase is a title whose store page explicitly lists Quest 2 compatibility. The headset is an older model, and support for new releases can vary by game and future software updates.
