Meta Quest 3 is the largest named entry in Valve’s September 2026 Steam VR Headsets survey, at 26.90%, ahead of Quest 2 at 25.80%. Steam Frame does not appear as a named entry in that month’s table. These figures describe the survey’s VR headset responses—not worldwide ownership, headset sales, or all Steam users.
Quest 3 leads Quest 2 in Valve’s September survey
Valve’s September 2026 Steam Hardware & Software Survey lists Meta Quest 3 at 26.90% and Oculus Quest 2 at 25.80% in its VR Headsets table. Quest 3 is therefore the largest named entry for that month, with a lead of 1.10 percentage points.
| Headset entry | September 2026 share | Monthly change |
|---|---|---|
| Meta Quest 3 | 26.90% | +0.89 percentage points |
| Oculus Quest 2 | 25.80% | −1.17 percentage points |
| Meta Quest 3S | 11.07% | −0.42 percentage points |
| Valve Index HMD | 10.83% | −0.25 percentage points |
Valve describes the survey as a monthly collection of data about the hardware and software its customers use, with participation optional and anonymous. The percentages are shares within the surveyed VR headset responses, not a census of headset owners or a measure of sales. Valve’s survey page does not provide a response count or confidence interval alongside these figures.
Steam Frame is absent from the September table—not necessarily unreleased
No named Steam Frame row appears in Valve’s September 2026 VR Headsets table. That omission alone cannot establish whether the headset had shipped, whether any owners use it with Steam, or why it is not listed. The survey is optional and anonymous, and Valve does not publish response-level detail there to explain the absence.

Valve first introduced Steam Frame among hardware “coming in 2026” in its November 12, 2025 hardware announcement. On June 4, 2026, Valve said the new hardware would ship “this summer” in a Steamworks developer announcement. That was a shipping expectation stated at the time, not confirmation of a completed retail launch. The official sources reviewed here do not establish its actual retail date, final consumer price, or availability as of October 2, 2026.
What Valve says Steam Frame is designed to do
Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes Steam Frame as a standalone VR headset designed primarily for low-latency streaming of a player’s Steam library from a PC, while also supporting standalone VR and non-VR experiences. The headset runs SteamOS and supports SteamVR and OpenXR.

Valve’s June announcement likewise characterized PC streaming as the primary use, while noting that games can run entirely on the headset. It also introduced the Steam Frame Standalone Verified program. Those product details explain Valve’s intended positioning; they do not answer the separate question of when consumers can buy the device.

- It does show: Quest 3 leads Quest 2 among the named headset entries in Valve’s September 2026 survey table.
- It does not show: that Quest 3 holds the largest share of all VR headsets sold or owned worldwide, or that 26.90% of all Steam users own one.
- It does not establish: why Steam Frame has no named row, or whether the headset had reached retail by the date of the survey.
So the precise answer is yes: Quest 3 overtook Quest 2 in this month’s named Steam survey entries. Steam Frame is not yet visible in that table, but the table alone cannot confirm its retail status.
