Pi1541 is a Raspberry Pi project that emulates a Commodore 1541 disk drive in real time, with cycle-exact operation as its design goal. It lets a real Commodore 8-bit computer use supported disk-image files from SD-card storage through a Raspberry Pi-based drive setup.
What is Pi1541?
Pi1541 is drive-emulation software for people using original Commodore hardware. Instead of relying on a physical 1541 drive and floppy disks, the setup uses a Raspberry Pi and SD card to present disk images to a compatible Commodore computer. The Pi1541 project describes its emulation as real-time and cycle-exact; that describes the project’s approach, not a guarantee that every program will work on every hardware configuration.

Can Pi1541 load D64 and G64 files?
Yes. The upstream README lists four supported disk-image formats:

These are project-documented formats; the list alone does not establish that every image or piece of software will behave identically in every setup.
What do I need to run Pi1541 on my Raspberry Pi?
The official setup guide lists the basic components and files. The exact interface and configuration depend on your board, so use the instructions for the hardware you actually have rather than assuming a cable or HAT will work universally.

- A Raspberry Pi model supported by the software build and configuration you intend to use.
- An SD card.
- A cable or a compatible Pi HAT PCB/interface board.
- Raspberry Pi firmware.
- A valid 1541 and/or 1581 ROM file.
The Pi1541 setup guide provides configuration information and directs users to hardware-specific instructions. Follow those details for the chosen board and interface.
Which Raspberry Pi works with Pi1541?
The upstream repository names Raspberry Pi 3A, 3B, and 3B+ as models on which Pi1541 can run. The linked setup guide discusses a broader range of models for its configurations. These are not presented as one versioned compatibility matrix, so treat them as documentation for particular project materials and configurations—not proof that every model works identically.

The sample options.txt file also notes that some options have only been tested using a Raspberry Pi 3. Check the options and hardware guidance for your setup before choosing a board or interface.

There is no single parts combination established as universal. Make the decision around the documentation for the software build and hardware you plan to use.

What cycle-exact means—and what it does not promise
Cycle-exact describes Pi1541’s intended timing fidelity when emulating a 1541. It is useful context for why the project is designed as a drive emulator rather than merely a way to browse disk files. The project description and sample configuration do not establish a universal compatibility rate across software, Raspberry Pi models, interfaces, and settings, so a cycle-exact design goal should not be read as a guarantee for every title.
