Meta Quest 4 is not officially confirmed. As of August 18, 2026, Meta has announced no Quest 4 product, release date, price, or specification sheet. Current reporting points to successor XR hardware, but it may arrive in 2027 or later, under a different name, or as part of a wider two-device strategy rather than as a conventional Quest 3 replacement.
If you need a headset now, buy according to your current needs: Quest 3S is the lower-cost entry point, while Quest 3 remains the better all-round choice for optics and comfort. Waiting makes more sense for existing Quest 3 owners who want a substantial generational leap and can tolerate an uncertain timeline.

Meta Quest 4 release date: what is the latest prediction?
There is no confirmed Meta Quest 4 release date. A late-2026 launch remains possible, but the available evidence does not support presenting it as likely or imminent. The more defensible working forecast is 2027 or later.
That forecast is still not a promise. UploadVR reported that some alleged 2026 Quest 4 candidates had been canceled, while later reporting discussed a gaming-focused next-generation headset that could target the first half of 2027 or a later window. In July 2026, VR.org described Meta’s roadmap as pointing away from a straightforward, conventional Quest 4 and toward other successor devices. These reports concern leaked or reported roadmaps, not a Meta announcement.

The uncertainty matters because a canceled project is not the same as a canceled product family. Meta could delay a device, rename it, reposition it, or replace one internal project with another. Internal codenames should not be treated as retail product names.
For now, the useful conclusion is:
- Earliest plausible window: late 2026, with weak support.
- More credible working window: 2027 or later.
- Confirmed information: no date exists.
Genuine confirmation would come from a Meta product announcement, official product page, earnings-call statement, or developer documentation that identifies the device. A retailer placeholder, anonymous social-media post, or YouTube prediction is not equivalent.
UploadVR’s roadmap reporting and VR.org’s July 2026 report are useful context, but both should be read as unconfirmed reporting.

Not exactly—but “Meta canceled Quest 4” is too broad a statement.
Reports have referred to multiple internal hardware projects and alleged cancellations involving possible 2026 Quest 4 candidates. That could mean a particular design was abandoned while successor hardware continued elsewhere on the roadmap. It could also mean a delay, a name change, or a shift from one mainstream headset to multiple products with different audiences.

In other words, three materially different outcomes are being conflated:
- Project canceled: one internal device no longer moves toward release.
- Project delayed: the hardware remains possible but launches later.
- Project renamed or repositioned: the product survives but is not sold as Quest 4 or does not replace Quest 3 directly.
Meta’s investment in AI glasses does not prove that it is abandoning standalone VR. It does, however, suggest that Reality Labs’ hardware strategy may not follow a simple annual numbered-headset cycle.
Meta Quest 4 price predictions
There is no official Quest 4 price. Any exact figure circulating online is speculation unless Meta publishes an MSRP.
The current generation provides context, but not a reliable price formula. Meta launched Quest 3 at $499.99 in the US and Quest 3S at $299.99. Reporting in April 2026 said Meta raised US prices by $50, putting the Quest 3S 128GB at $349.99 and the Quest 3S 256GB at $449.99; other reporting placed Quest 3 at approximately $599.99. Check the live Quest 3 store page and Quest 3S store page for current storage, promotions, and regional pricing.
Those changes also make older articles claiming that Quest 3 “costs $499” potentially misleading. Launch MSRP, current MSRP, sale price, bundle value, refurbished price, taxes, and regional currency pricing are separate things.

| Scenario | Possible positioning | Editorial estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Aggressive mainstream successor | Direct Quest 3 replacement | Approximately $500–$650 |
| Higher-performance gaming headset | Large upgrade without heavy subsidization | Approximately $700–$1,000+ |
| Premium XR device | Better optics, sensors, displays, or materials | Potentially above $1,000 |
| Two-device strategy | Separate affordable and premium models | A single price would be misleading |
The higher-price scenarios are not leaked MSRPs. They reflect reporting that a gaming-focused device could deliver a major upgrade without the same level of subsidy associated with earlier mainstream Quest hardware. If Meta chooses that route, “Quest 4” may not be the next affordable headset most buyers expect.
Meta Quest 4 rumored specs: what is actually known?
No Quest 4 hardware specification is confirmed. The responsible prediction is that Meta will pursue familiar generational goals—more performance, better mixed reality, improved efficiency, and better ergonomics—without inventing exact numbers.
| Feature | What has been reported or reasonably expected | Confidence |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | A newer Qualcomm XR platform is a reasonable generational expectation. No chip model is confirmed. | Prediction |

Do not treat claims about Snapdragon XR3, XR2 Gen 3, OLED or micro-OLED displays, exact battery capacity, camera megapixels, weight, field of view, or launch games as established facts. No reliable public specification sheet supports those details.
Performance and on-device AI
A successor would be expected to offer faster standalone rendering, more advanced lighting and physics, stronger mixed-reality applications, and more room for multitasking. Newer hardware could also extend the useful life of demanding games and applications.
Meta already describes on-device AI workloads on Quest 3 and Quest 3S, including scene understanding, depth estimation, hand tracking, controller tracking, and persistent room memory. That makes more local AI processing a sensible direction for future hardware, but it does not confirm any Quest 4 feature. Meta also documents a Passthrough Camera API for Quest 3 and Quest 3S, requiring Horizon OS version 74 or later, showing that camera-based mixed reality is an active platform priority.

What we want from Meta Quest 4
These are wishlist items, not leaked specifications. They would improve ownership more than a processor name alone:
- Much better weight distribution and a genuinely more comfortable stock fit.
- A wider optical sweet spot with less glare and fewer distracting artifacts.
- More flexible IPD adjustment and stronger prescription-lens support.
- Higher-quality passthrough with lower latency, better exposure, and improved dynamic range.
- More reliable room mapping and object awareness in dim or visually complex rooms.
- Longer battery life, or an efficient and replaceable battery system.
- Stronger wireless PC VR performance with more consistent streaming.
- More durable controllers with replaceable parts and easier repair.
- Better microphones and speakers without making the headset heavier.
- Clearer software-support commitments and a transparent accessory strategy.
- More capable hand tracking, voice interaction, and accessibility features.
- A product lineup that does not require buyers to decode internal codenames.
Will Quest 4 be backward-compatible?
That remains an open question. If a new headset runs the same Horizon OS and platform APIs, existing Quest software may continue to work. That is not a guarantee that every title will behave identically.
Future games could require newer graphics, AI, tracking, or performance features. Compatibility might vary by title, developer support, performance mode, or controller requirements. Accessories are an even bigger uncertainty: a redesigned facial interface, tracking system, charging dock, connector layout, or controller design could make current straps, cases, prescription inserts, and docks incompatible.

Should you buy Quest 3 or Quest 3S now?
Buy Quest 3S now if:
- You want the lowest-cost route into Meta’s current standalone VR ecosystem.
- You want to play current Quest games, use fitness apps, watch media, or try mixed reality immediately.
- You are upgrading from Quest 2 and find a meaningful discount or bundle.
- You care more about entry price than compact optics and text clarity.
Meta positions Quest 3S as sharing Quest 3’s core mixed-reality capabilities and fast performance. Its trade-off is the older optical design, which is less attractive for frequent text-heavy productivity or users who are sensitive to lens clarity.
Buy Quest 3 now if:
- You want the strongest current mainstream Quest experience.
- You care about better optics, a more compact design, and a more premium daily experience.
- You use the headset frequently for productivity, reading, simulation, or PC VR.
- You do not want to wait an unknown amount of time for an unannounced device.
Quest 3 launched from $499.99 in the US, but its current price, storage options, bundles, and discounts should be checked on Meta’s official buying page.
Wait if:
- You already own Quest 3 and want a major generational improvement rather than an incremental upgrade.
- Your priorities are significantly better comfort, optics, passthrough, or standalone performance.
- You can wait until at least 2027 without a guaranteed launch date.
- You have a higher budget and would consider a premium or gaming-focused successor.
Quest 2 owners are a special case. A discounted Quest 3S or Quest 3 can provide a large practical improvement today, so waiting only for a rumor may leave you without the experience you want for an unknown period.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat could go wrong with waiting?
- Meta may not announce a product called Quest 4.
- The launch could slip beyond 2027.
- The device could cost far more than a Quest 3 replacement.
- The product could be premium or gaming-focused rather than mainstream.
- Initial software support could be limited.
- Current accessories and prescription inserts may not fit.
- Quest 3 and Quest 3S promotions or availability could change while you wait.
PC VR users should also avoid assuming that a newer standalone headset automatically improves wireless PC VR. Router quality, PC hardware, network congestion, compression, tracking, and game support all affect that experience.
Fitness users may value weight distribution, facial comfort, sweat handling, and battery life more than benchmark performance. Families should consider storage, account-sharing rules, parental controls, and controller replacement costs. International buyers should treat US prices as context only: taxes, VAT, currency conversion, and local availability differ.
Verdict
Meta Quest 4 is currently a rumor category, not a confirmed retail product. Meta has not announced its name, timing, price, or specifications as of August 18, 2026. Successor hardware appears plausible, but current reporting supports a cautious 2027-or-later forecast more strongly than a firm late-2026 prediction.
Buy Quest 3S for the least expensive entry into the current ecosystem, or Quest 3 for better optics and a more comfortable all-round experience. Wait if you already own Quest 3 and specifically want a major upgrade—but do not buy speculative accessories or delay a purchase solely because an unverified rumor says Quest 4 is imminent. Monitor Meta’s official Quest pages for confirmation.
