Meta Quest 4 has not been officially announced. Meta is developing next-generation XR hardware, but there is no confirmed Quest 4 name, launch date, price, design, processor or specification sheet. The previously expected 2026 launch now looks unlikely; for a traditional gaming-focused successor, late 2027 at the earliest—and possibly 2028—is the more defensible planning window.
- Buy Quest 3 now if you want standalone VR immediately.
- Choose Quest 3S if price matters most.
- Wait if you already own Quest 3 and want a major generational upgrade.
Is Meta Quest 4 officially confirmed?
No. Meta has not announced a retail product called Meta Quest 4. There is no official release date, MSRP, final design, processor, display technology, storage configuration or compatibility statement.

What is confirmed is broader: Meta continues developing next-generation hardware across Quest headsets, glasses and other wearable devices. Meta has also described ongoing work on on-device AI for Reality Labs hardware, including capabilities relevant to scene understanding, hand tracking, controller tracking and persistent room memory. That confirms an active hardware strategy, not a specific product named Quest 4. Meta’s Reality Labs on-device AI overview is the relevant primary source.
“On the roadmap” also does not mean “ready to launch.” A roadmap can change before a product reaches mass production, receives regulatory approval, gets a final name or becomes available globally.

What happened to the expected 2026 Quest 4?
Older reporting suggested that Meta was preparing two Quest 4-related devices for 2026, associated with the internal codenames Pismo Low and Pismo High. Later reporting said those plans were canceled, reworked or overtaken by a different ultralight headset project.
- Early reports pointed to two Quest 4 variants targeting 2026. UploadVR’s earlier roadmap report described that expectation.
- Subsequent reporting said Meta changed course and began prioritizing an ultralight device instead. UploadVR later reported on the roadmap change.
- Further reporting described the ultralight project, often linked to the codename Puffin, as taking priority while a separate gaming-oriented successor, associated with Griffin, moved later. That later UploadVR report is why a 2026 Quest 4 launch should no longer be treated as the default forecast.
The important correction is that many older Quest 4 articles recycled the original 2026 prediction without updating it after the reported Pismo changes. Meta has not confirmed the codenames or canceled plans, so these remain reported roadmap information rather than official product facts.
Latest rumored release date
| Timeframe | Confidence | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 retail Quest 4 launch | Unlikely | Not supported by the latest roadmap reporting. |
| Late 2026 announcement or teaser | Possible | A roadmap update or hardware tease could happen, but it would not necessarily mean immediate retail availability. |
| Late 2027 traditional gaming successor | Most defensible estimate | Reported as an earliest plausible window, not a confirmed date. |
| 2028 | Reasonable wider window | Hardware schedules can move, particularly after a reported project change. |
Meta Connect 2026 is reportedly scheduled for September 23, 2026. A headset announcement or tease there would be meaningful, but it should not automatically be described as a Quest 4 launch. Current reporting suggests that a full retail gaming headset in 2026 is unlikely. VR.org’s roadmap coverage discusses the possible separation between Meta’s next-generation devices.
Andrew Bosworth comments have also been interpreted as keeping future Quest hardware on Meta’s roadmap, but executive comments and internal roadmaps are not launch commitments. The reported comments and interpretation should be read in that context.
Quest 4 versus the rumored ultralight headset
Do not merge every Meta XR rumor into one device. The reported ultralight headset and the traditional gaming successor appear to serve different goals, although Meta has not confirmed either final product or name.
| Reported ultralight device | Reported gaming successor | |
|---|---|---|
| Primary goal | Lower weight, comfort and a glasses-like mixed-reality experience. | A larger upgrade focused on standalone VR performance and immersive gaming. |
| Computing | Possibly moved partly to an external puck, according to reports. | No external-puck design has been established. |
| Likely positioning | Mixed reality, productivity and frequent wear. | Gaming, higher graphics performance and more demanding standalone applications. |
| Relationship to “Quest 4” | Unclear and possibly a separate product family. | More likely to occupy the traditional Quest successor category, but “Quest 4” is not confirmed. |
| Timing | Reported as the earlier priority. | Reported as later, potentially 2027–2028. |
Even if both devices share software or components, one may not replace the other. Meta appears to be considering a portfolio that includes affordable Quest hardware, gaming headsets, premium or productivity devices, ultralight mixed-reality products and AI-focused glasses.
Possible Quest 4 specifications
There is no verified retail specification sheet. The following separates reasonable upgrade directions from unverified claims.
Rank #2
- CARDBOARD MONKENAUT — Get our best Gorilla Tag bundle yet with this Amazon exclusive deal. Purchase Meta Quest 3S to get exclusive items, including the Gorilla Space Program Suit and Helmet, plus 2,000 SHINY ROCKS.

- EXPERIENCE VIRTUAL REALITY — Take gaming to a new level and blend virtual objects with your physical space to experience two worlds at once in your VR headset.
- 2+ HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — Charge less, play longer and stay in the action with an improved battery that keeps up. *Based on the graphic performance of the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 platform vs the Meta Quest 2 platform.
Processor and standalone performance
Quest 3 and Quest 3S use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 platform. Meta’s developer documentation lists both devices as the current hardware generation and documents support for 90Hz and 120Hz display refresh rates. See the Passthrough Camera API requirements and Meta’s mobile performance guidance.
A future gaming-focused headset would logically need a newer XR platform, higher GPU performance, more memory bandwidth, improved thermal efficiency and faster loading. Names such as Snapdragon XR3 or XR2 Gen 3, however, are unverified in this context. No credible public evidence establishes which chip a final product will use or how much faster it will be.
Displays and lenses
Possible improvements include higher resolution, better edge-to-edge clarity, wider field of view, reduced glare and improved pancake optics. OLED or micro-OLED panels are frequently mentioned in speculation, but there is no reliable confirmation that the gaming successor will use either technology.
Display upgrades would matter most for users who read text, work in virtual monitors or are frustrated by the limited sharpness outside the center of a lens. They should still be treated as a wishlist, not a leak.

Mixed reality and cameras
Quest 3 and Quest 3S already provide color passthrough, hand tracking, scene understanding and camera access for computer-vision applications. Meta’s Passthrough Camera API requires Horizon OS v74 or later and Quest 3 or Quest 3S hardware. A future headset could improve passthrough image quality, depth accuracy, low-light performance, occlusion, room mapping, hand tracking, body tracking and on-device AI.
Those are plausible directions rather than confirmed Quest 4 camera specifications. Claims about exact sensor counts, resolution or low-light performance should be ignored until Meta publishes them.
Weight, battery and comfort
The ultralight rumors should not automatically be applied to Quest 4. A gaming headset may remain larger if it needs a bigger battery, stronger cooling, more cameras, higher sustained performance or traditional controllers.

Meta is likely to continue refining hand tracking alongside Touch-style controllers, but there is no confirmed controller design or statement that Quest 3 controllers will work with a future headset. The same caution applies to head straps, docks, facial interfaces, prescription lenses and other accessories.
Quest 3 software compatibility is also not guaranteed in every detail. Meta may preserve the existing library while introducing a higher performance tier, but compatibility and enhancement policies should be confirmed at announcement.
Expected price
There is no verified Quest 4 price. The most credible pricing development is a reported change in strategy: Meta may be less willing to subsidize a future high-end gaming headset as aggressively as earlier Quest models. If accurate, that could mean a substantially higher launch price than Quest 3’s original $499 starting price. It does not prove an $800 MSRP.
Older coverage floated prices around $800, but those figures are speculation rather than a confirmed leak. Earlier speculation and later reporting about the lack of a confirmed price should not be treated as equivalent evidence.

Tom’s Hardware reported the increase, while later deal coverage demonstrates why sale prices should not be confused with MSRP. PC Gamer’s promotion coverage provides that distinction.
These are U.S. price signals, not universal global prices. Taxes, currency conversion, storage capacity and regional promotions can produce different totals.

What Quest 4 needs to improve
These are reader-centered expectations, not confirmed specifications:
- Comfort: better balance and a more usable stock strap.
- Visual clarity: sharper lenses across more of the field of view.
- Battery life: longer sessions without immediately adding a battery strap.
- Standalone graphics: higher detail, faster loading and more consistent performance.
- Mixed reality: cleaner passthrough, more accurate depth and more reliable occlusion.
- Tracking: dependable hand, controller and body tracking in difficult lighting.
- Contrast: better black levels and fewer distracting optical artifacts.
- Wireless PC VR: lower friction and more stable streaming.
- Setup: fewer account, boundary and room-mapping interruptions.
A headset does not need to improve every category to be worthwhile. A lighter productivity device and a faster gaming headset could make different trade-offs.

Buy Quest 3 now if you:
- Want to play current standalone VR games immediately.
- Are upgrading from Quest 2.
- Value pancake-lens clarity and mixed-reality features.
- Want access to the existing Quest ecosystem without waiting potentially 12–24 months or longer.
- Can accept that a future model may cost more without being better in every category.
Check the current Meta Quest 3 listing for live regional pricing, storage and availability before buying.
Choose Quest 3S if price is the main constraint
Quest 3S is the lower-cost entry into the same broad XR2 Gen 2 platform. It is suitable for newcomers who prioritize access to the Quest library over optical sharpness. Its lower-cost Fresnel-style optical design is a weaker fit for reading small text, productivity and users who want edge-to-edge clarity.
Check the current Meta Quest 3S listing rather than relying on an old price article or a temporary sale.
Wait if you already own Quest 3
Waiting is reasonable if your current headset meets your needs and you specifically want a substantial performance or comfort leap. The trade-off is uncertainty: there is no confirmed product, no confirmed date and a meaningful possibility of a higher price.

The old 2026 expectation came from earlier reporting and release-cycle assumptions. It should not be used as a purchase plan after the reported Pismo changes. Do not base a decision on a retailer listing, a concept video, a guessed specification sheet or the assumption that Puffin and Griffin are the same product.

What would confirm Quest 4?
The forecast should change materially when one or more of these signals appears:
- An official Meta announcement or product page.
- A developer SDK or firmware reference naming a new retail device.
- Regulatory certification tied to an identifiable headset.
- A major retailer listing with corroborating evidence.
- Confirmation of the Qualcomm platform.
- An official Meta Connect hardware reveal.
- Evidence that the device has entered mass production.
A single anonymous leak is not enough to establish a launch date, final name or global availability. Internal codenames can refer to prototypes, canceled projects or hardware that never reaches consumers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Meta Quest 4 coming in 2026?
A full retail launch in 2026 appears unlikely based on the latest reporting. An announcement or teaser remains possible, while late 2027 at the earliest—or 2028—is a more defensible window for a traditional gaming successor.
Recommended Free Tools
Will Quest 4 cost $800?
There is no confirmed price. Reports suggest Meta may reduce subsidies on a future high-end headset, which could make it more expensive than Quest 3, but $800 remains speculation.
Is Puffin the Meta Quest 4?
That has not been established. Puffin is the reported codename for a separate ultralight headset project, while Griffin has been associated with a later gaming-focused device.
Should I buy Quest 3 or wait?
Buy Quest 3 if you want capable standalone VR now. Wait if you already own Quest 3, want a major generational leap and can accept an uncertain 2027–2028 timeline and potentially higher price.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Meta Quest 4 is a real subject of roadmap reporting, but it is not an officially announced product. The old 2026 launch expectation is increasingly difficult to defend. If you need VR now, Quest 3 is the practical current-generation choice and Quest 3S is the budget option. If you already own Quest 3, waiting makes sense—but wait for official evidence, not recycled 2026 rumors.
