The 2024 leak about three upcoming Meta headsets was real reporting, but it no longer describes the roadmap as later reports understand it. The original plan reportedly named Quest 4, Quest 4S and Quest Pro 2. More recent coverage instead points to two redesigned devices: an ultra-light headset with a separate compute-and-battery puck, and a later, gaming-focused Quest successor. Meta has not confirmed their retail names, specifications, prices or release dates.
What the original three-headset leak said
A 2024 report described a leaked Meta roadmap with three devices after Quest 3S: Quest 4, Quest 4S and Quest Pro 2. The two Quest models were reportedly intended for different price and performance tiers, while Quest Pro 2 would sit above the mainstream line. The reported schedule put Quest 4 and Quest 4S in 2026, with Quest Pro 2 following in 2027. The original report was about an internal roadmap, not a public Meta launch announcement.
That distinction matters: an internal project can be a prototype, a placeholder or a tentative plan, and it can be canceled or changed before a product reaches stores. The three names and dates are best treated as a snapshot of what Meta was reportedly considering in 2024.
Why the roadmap appears to have changed
Later reporting says Meta canceled or reworked the original “Pismo” candidates associated with the 2026 Quest 4 and Quest 4S plan, then shifted attention to a different lightweight headset and a separate gaming-focused successor. UploadVR’s reporting on the change and its later account of the revised priorities describe a changed roadmap, not a confirmed retail lineup.

So “Quest 4 is canceled” is too broad. The original candidates may have been canceled or redesigned, but reporting still points to a future gaming-oriented Quest device. A canceled project, a replacement product and a delayed successor are not necessarily the same thing—and the final branding could differ from the names used in leaks.
The two devices now reportedly in focus
An ultra-light headset with a compute puck
One reported project is a very light headset connected by cable to an external unit that carries computing hardware and battery capacity. Moving components away from the face could reduce headset weight. The trade-off is that the user would have another device to carry or charge, plus a cable that could affect movement. Those are design implications, not confirmed details about a final product.

Reports associate the project with the internal codename “Puffin” and place a possible target in the first half of 2027. The codename is not a confirmed retail name, and a reported target could refer to development, announcement or availability; Meta has not publicly committed to a launch date. Coverage of the reported ultralight project suggests it could emphasize media, social use, fitness and mixed reality rather than simply serving as a conventional gaming headset.
A gaming-focused Quest successor
The other reported device is a more conventional headset aimed at immersive gaming, described in reporting as a substantial upgrade over Quest 3. It appears to be a successor to the mainstream Quest line rather than the original lower-cost Quest 4S candidate. Its release may come after the ultralight device: later reporting suggests late 2027 at the earliest, with 2028 also possible. Reporting on the gaming-focused successor also raises the possibility that Meta could subsidize it less aggressively than previous headsets, which could mean a higher price. Neither timing nor pricing is confirmed.

Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth has publicly indicated that the company has two devices on its roadmap and remains engaged in future headset development. That broad statement supports the idea that work continues, but it does not identify the products or confirm their specifications. Coverage of Bosworth’s comments should not be read as confirmation of the old Quest 4, Quest 4S and Quest Pro 2 lineup.
What the reported timeline does—and does not—establish
| Date or period | What is established or reported |
|---|---|
| June 2023 | Meta announced Quest 3, with an expected fall launch. Meta’s announcement gave original US prices of $499.99 for 128GB and $649.99 for 512GB. |
| October 10, 2023 | Quest 3 launched. Meta’s launch details described Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2, pancake optics and full-color mixed reality. |
| September 25, 2024 | Meta announced Quest 3S at a US starting price of $299.99. Its announcement positioned it as a lower-cost way into the Quest 3-generation experience. |
| 2024 leak | Quest 4 and Quest 4S were reportedly planned for 2026, with Quest Pro 2 later, reportedly in 2027. These were leaked targets, not confirmed launch dates. |
| Later reporting through August 2026 | The original candidates were reportedly canceled or reworked. Reports instead point to an ultralight device potentially targeted for the first half of 2027 and a gaming successor no earlier than late 2027, possibly 2028. |
There is no reliable confirmation that a Quest 4 will launch in 2026. The old 2026 expectation belongs to the earlier roadmap; the later dates are also leaks and interpretations, not official commitments. Meta’s public product material confirms Quest 3 and Quest 3S, not Quest 4, Quest 4S or Quest Pro 2. The company’s broader mixed-reality strategy does not supply a consumer headset launch schedule.

What is still unknown about the next headsets
Beyond the broad form-factor and audience described in reporting, buyers should not treat leaked specification lists as settled. No verified complete specification sheet establishes:
- Retail names, exact release dates, prices or regional availability.
- Displays, resolution, field of view, processor, weight or battery life.
- Whether either device will include eye or face tracking, or require controllers.
- Whether the compute puck is mandatory, optional or independently upgradeable.
- Whether the ultralight headset will run the full Quest software library.
- Quest Store, Horizon OS, PC VR, hand-tracking, controller or accessory compatibility.
Claims about micro-OLED, Snapdragon XR3, a particular weight, controller removal or a specific price remain unverified in the cited reporting. A new device announcement would not, by itself, answer compatibility questions; wait for Meta or developers to state supported software and accessories.

Should you buy Quest 3 or Quest 3S, or wait?
Choose based on what you need now, rather than on a date attached to a leak. Meta’s official launch prices are historical baselines, not current quotes: secondary reporting says US prices rose in April 2026, reportedly to about $600 for Quest 3 and $350 for Quest 3S. Check the live Quest 3 and Quest 3S listings before buying; actual prices can vary by storage, retailer, region, bundles and promotions. The price increase figures are reported, not a price announcement cited here from Meta. PC Gamer’s report covers the reported change.
| Option | Better fit if… | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Quest 3S | You want the lowest-cost entry to the Quest 3-generation library, are new to VR, or mainly play games and use media apps. | Its lower-cost Fresnel-lens design is less visually refined than Quest 3’s pancake optics. |
| Quest 3 | You use a headset frequently, care about sharper edge-to-edge clarity, read text or use virtual screens, or want more storage and a slimmer optical design. | It costs more; check current pricing rather than assuming the original launch price still applies. |
| Wait for official next-generation details | You specifically want a major performance leap or lighter form factor and can comfortably wait into at least 2027. | There is no confirmed launch window, price, final design or complete feature list. |
Quest 3S supports the Quest 3-generation software library, while Quest 3’s pancake optics and more advanced optical package are the stronger fit for users who prioritize visual clarity. Meta’s product comparison is in its Quest 3S announcement. Before spending heavily on model-specific accessories, consider that a substantially different future form factor might not carry them forward; Meta’s current accessory listings do not establish compatibility with rumored devices.
Could Meta reveal hardware at Connect 2026?
Reports have speculated about a possible tease or announcement at Meta Connect in September 2026, but that is not confirmation that a Quest successor will appear. Possible outcomes range from no new VR headset announcement to a concept reveal, a launch-window update or an unrelated hardware announcement. Meta’s June 2026 announcement of a new Meta Glasses line, starting at $299, is evidence of broader hardware activity—not evidence of a Quest launch date. Meta’s glasses announcement covers that product line.
For buyers, a teaser would still leave the important questions—price, shipping date, software library and compatibility—unanswered unless Meta addresses them directly. Treat any Connect timing prediction as speculation until there is an official announcement.
