Meta Quest v85 brings a redesigned home interface—and a virtual keyboard for your table

Meta Quest firmware v85 was previewed through the Public Test Channel with a redesigned Navigator interface, the removal of Horizon Feed, new accessibility and security features, and an experimental Surface Keyboard and Touchpad for Quest 3. The keyboard does not literally project onto a table for people outside the headset: it is a virtual mixed-reality overlay anchored to a detected flat surface.

The available report describes a February 2026 preview, not a definitive record of the final stable rollout. Features may arrive gradually and can vary by headset, account, region, and rollout stage.

What Meta Quest v85 includes

The update is broader than a visual refresh. The February preview described changes to Quest’s home interface, app launching, accessibility controls, browser security, privacy indicators, malware scanning, and ongoing-activity controls. The detailed feature report is available from Android Central.

Navigator replaces the older home experience

v85 continues Meta’s transition to Navigator, an interface intended to make the Quest home screen simpler and app launching faster. From a user’s perspective, the important change is how the app drawer, floating 2D windows, and home controls are organized.

  • EXPERIENCE VIRTUAL REALITY — Blend virtual objects with your physical space and experience two worlds at once in your VR headset.

The change was reported as a gradual rollout rather than a simultaneous switch for every headset. Two people running the same firmware number may therefore see different layouts while Navigator is being delivered.

The redesign may make common actions easier to find, but it also changes familiar habits. The separation between controls used to launch apps and controls used to manage floating windows can feel confusing, particularly for existing users learning the new arrangement. That is a usability trade-off, not evidence of a measured defect rate.

Horizon Feed is being removed

v85 reportedly removes Horizon Feed, a 2D panel that presented Horizon Worlds content, Instagram Reels, videos, and other material inside Quest Home. Meta reportedly said the panel was removed because it did not produce strong “entitlement conversion”—in practical terms, more people closed it than opened the promoted content.

The immediate effect should be a less promotional and social-looking home experience. Removing Horizon Feed does not by itself mean that Horizon Worlds is being shut down or removed from the Quest platform.

Quest 3 gets the virtual Surface Keyboard and Touchpad

The most unusual feature in the preview is called Surface Keyboard and Touchpad. On a compatible Quest 3, it can place a virtual keyboard on a detected flat surface and a laptop-style virtual touchpad beside it. Passthrough lets the wearer see the real table while interacting with the headset-rendered controls.

  • 2+ HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — Charge less, play longer and stay in the action with an improved battery that keeps up. *Based on the graphic performance of the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 platform vs the Meta Quest 2 platform.

That distinction matters. This is not an optical projector casting a keyboard onto a table that everyone in the room can see. It is a virtual overlay visible through the headset.

Why is it limited to Quest 3?

The preview coverage identifies the feature as Quest 3-only and does not give an official reason for the restriction. One plausible explanation is that Quest 3’s depth-sensing hardware helps it measure surfaces and their position, while the Quest 3S does not have the same hardware. That is an inference, not a confirmed explanation from Meta.

Whether support later expands to Quest 3S or other headsets is not established by the available report.

How to try it

For the reported PTC preview, Quest 3 users were directed to update to the v85 test build, open Settings, enter Experimental Features, and look for Surface Keyboard and Touchpad.

Because this path comes from the preview report, menu names and availability may have changed. Do not assume that seeing v85 on the headset guarantees that the experiment is enabled.

  • EXPERIENCE VIRTUAL REALITY — Blend virtual objects with your physical space and experience two worlds at once.
  • 2+ HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — Charge less, play longer and stay in the action with an improved battery that keeps up.

What the feature cannot promise

  • It is not a replacement for a physical keyboard during long writing sessions.
  • Tracking and surface detection may be less reliable on dark, reflective, cluttered, or irregular surfaces.
  • Lighting, passthrough quality, headset position, and room scanning can affect results.
  • The virtual touchpad may be less precise than a physical mouse or trackpad.

A clear, reasonably lit table with enough unobstructed space is a more realistic target than “any table.”

Quest 3S gets a different headline change

Quest 3S owners are not excluded from v85, but the preview did not report Surface Keyboard and Touchpad support for that headset. Instead, it highlighted customization for the underside Action Button.

Users can reportedly assign separate behavior to a short press and a long press. The button had previously been associated with quickly enabling mixed-reality passthrough, so this gives Quest 3S owners more control over that physical shortcut.

If table-based virtual input is your main reason for considering a headset, the February preview points toward Quest 3—not Quest 3S. It does not, however, establish that the feature remains exclusive in the final stable release.

Accessibility and ongoing-activity changes

v85 reportedly adds voice commands and head movements for controlling 2D windows. These options are intended to help people with limited hand mobility and can reduce the need for precise controller input.

  • 33% MORE MEMORY — Elevate your play with 8GB of RAM. Upgraded memory delivers a next-level experience fueled by sharper graphics and more responsive performance.

The update also adds an option to hide virtual hands when they are outside the wearer’s view. This can make the interface less visually distracting, although it does not make Quest completely controller-free. Accuracy can depend on lighting, headset fit, calibration, voice recognition, and the application being controlled.

Meta also redesigned the Ongoing Activities panel, bringing controls for recording video, calls, and media playback into a revised layout. The company characterized the redesign as groundwork for future features.

Security and browser improvements

The preview lists three notable security and privacy changes:

  • Automated malware scanning: Quest can scan apps after installation. This may improve protection, but it is not a guarantee that every malicious or abusive app will be detected.
  • Privacy indicators: New indicators modeled on guidelines associated with Android 12 can make relevant system activity more visible. They do not prove that all tracking or data collection has stopped.
  • Passkeys in Quest Browser: Compatible websites and accounts can use passkeys instead of traditional passwords. Support depends on the site, browser, account, and available recovery methods.

These are useful safeguards and convenience improvements, not blanket security guarantees.

Should you install the Public Test Channel build?

Most people should wait for the stable release. The PTC is most appropriate for developers, advanced users, and Quest 3 owners who specifically want to experiment with Surface Keyboard and Touchpad and can tolerate bugs.

Reasons to wait

  • Preview builds can introduce bugs or regressions.
  • System changes can affect navigation, app launching, passthrough, hand tracking, or controllers.
  • The preview may differ from the final release.
  • Features can roll out gradually even after the headset reports the relevant firmware version.

Reasons to try it

  • You own a Quest 3 and want to test the experimental table-based input.
  • You develop or test Quest software.
  • You are comfortable troubleshooting an unstable interface.
  • You want early access to Navigator or the new accessibility controls.

Before joining, confirm that important data has synchronized to the cloud. Avoid installing a preview before travel, work, a demonstration, or an important gaming session. If problems appear, restart the headset, disable experimental features where possible, and leave the PTC using Meta’s current account and headset settings.

What is confirmed—and what is not

The February report confirms that v85 was previewed through Meta’s Public Test Channel and that the listed features were reported for that preview. It does not reliably establish the final stable rollout status as of later in 2026, the final menu path, the final device compatibility list, or whether Surface Keyboard and Touchpad remains experimental.

Meta’s earlier announcement about Direct Touch and virtual keyboards provides background on Quest’s hand-based interaction, but it is not a v85 changelog and should not be treated as proof that the v85 feature works on the same devices or through the same controls.

Verdict

Meta Quest v85’s most important change is probably Navigator and the resulting shift in how users launch and manage content. The virtual keyboard and touchpad are the striking novelty, but they are experimental, dependent on surface tracking, and reported for Quest 3 rather than Quest 3S.

Quest owners who value stability should wait for the stable build and its final compatibility details. Quest 3 enthusiasts and developers may find the PTC worth trying, provided they treat the table-based keyboard as an experiment—not as a replacement for a physical keyboard or proof that Quest has become entirely controller-free.
