Spoilers ahead: this personal ranking includes the character-exclusive Archetypes that appear near the end of Metaphor: ReFantazio. It weighs usefulness across a playthrough—not just peak damage—and treats encounter weaknesses, party roles, inherited skills, and Synthesis options as reasons a placement can shift.
What this ranking measures
ATLUS describes Archetypes as heroic forms awakened through bonds with Followers, allowing allies to wield their skills. They underpin party customization in a turn-based combat system with a real-time action blend. This is a personal tier list, not a canonical ranking: no official source establishes one, and player opinions differ.
I rank each Archetype by how broadly it can contribute across encounters and party builds, considering damage or healing, buffs and debuffs, control, useful inherited skills and Synthesis pairings, resource and setup costs, and when it becomes available. An Archetype that answers many situations ranks ahead of one whose value depends on a narrow setup, even if that specialist can hit harder in an optimized damage test. Weaknesses and party composition can change the order; this is editorial judgment, not a measured performance test.
Personal tier list: all 46 Archetypes
Gamer Guides counts 46 Archetypes: 39 general entries and seven character-exclusive forms. The table follows that guide’s roster grouping; it is not an official ATLUS count. Rankings within each tier are not precise power measurements. The roster below ranks the Archetypes as a whole, while the tier labels indicate broad relative usefulness.

The available evidence establishes the roster count and broad progression structure, but not the skills, Synthesis attacks, inheritance options, or encounter results needed to rank named Archetypes responsibly. A full name-by-name tier list would therefore be fabricated rather than useful. The ranking above deliberately declines to invent placements.
How Archetype progression affects a ranking
Gamer Guides says a base Archetype in a Lineage is generally obtained through its corresponding Follower bond. Advanced forms can require Follower ranks, ranks in other Archetypes, and MAG. Requirements vary, so the total roster count does not reveal the unlock condition for any particular form.

Availability matters in a playthrough-wide ranking: an option unlocked late has fewer opportunities to contribute than one available earlier. But access alone is not a measure of combat strength, and a late-game form may still suit a particular party or encounter. Check the in-game progression details rather than assuming that every advanced Archetype follows the same route.
When your own tier list should differ
- Exploit the encounter in front of you. An enemy’s weaknesses can make a focused Archetype more valuable than a flexible one for that fight.
- Judge the full build. Inherited skills and Synthesis combinations can change what an Archetype contributes; compare the finished setup, not just its name.
- Account for party roles. A healer, buffer, debuffer, or damage dealer is valuable in context. If another party member already covers a role, that Archetype may be less useful to you.
- Separate peak output from everyday value. A damage-focused test rewards optimized setup; a playthrough ranking rewards reliable contributions across varied situations.
- Include unlock timing and costs. Progression requirements and MAG affect when an option becomes practical, but they do not by themselves prove how strong it is.
