Metaphor: ReFantazio is not a Persona sequel, but it is a compelling spiritual successor: it carries forward familiar ATLUS strengths in time management, character bonds, and party-building, then reshapes them around a fantasy journey, Archetypes, and hybrid combat. That combination makes the “masterful” label a defensible critical judgment—not a promise that every Persona 5 fan will prefer it.
Why the Persona 5 comparison makes sense
Metaphor: ReFantazio is a fantasy RPG from ATLUS’ Studio Zero. The creative connection is unusually clear: SEGA identifies Katsura Hashino, Shigenori Soejima, and Shoji Meguro—the creators associated with Persona 3, Persona 4, and Persona 5—as the team behind Metaphor. That is meaningful creative lineage, not a formal franchise continuation. SEGA’s announcement describes it as “a fantasy RPG from ATLUS’ Studio Zero,” while the PlayStation release announcement situates it as a new fantasy setting.
What it inherits—and what it changes
A schedule-driven rhythm
ATLUS describes a routine of pursuing quests, exploring dungeons, and treasure hunting by day, then developing bonds and virtues by night. Time management influences which activities the player chooses. Persona 5 players will recognize the appeal of making limited time count, though Metaphor places that structure in a different journey rather than a contemporary school-and-city life. ATLUS’ official feature overview describes this cycle.
Archetypes and a distinct combat identity
Instead of simply repeating Persona’s framing, Metaphor builds party customization around Archetypes. ATLUS calls its combat “An exhilarating turn-based combat system with a blend of real-time action.” That hybrid description points to a different tactical identity, while the fantasy setting gives party roles a natural place in the world. The official overview establishes the blend, but does not by itself support a detailed one-to-one mechanical comparison with Persona 5.

A fantasy world with its own stakes
The story centers on a world where people must confront anxiety and take part in a Royal Tournament. Travel through towns and dungeons, alongside anime cutscenes, makes the journey’s scale part of its appeal. Where Persona 5 frames its story through modern city and school life, Metaphor uses an expansive fantasy world as the foundation for its conflicts and relationships. The premise and feature details are outlined by ATLUS.
Why “masterful” is a fair critical judgment
The case for the praise is the synthesis: a familiar ATLUS emphasis on planned days and meaningful bonds meets a new fantasy premise, configurable Archetypes, and combat that mixes turn-based play with real-time action. Awards provide reception context, not proof of universal agreement. SEGA reported that the game won Best RPG, Best Narrative, and Best Art Direction at The Game Awards 2024 in its 2024 announcement. The Japan Game Awards named it the Annual Game Category Grand Prize winner in 2025, according to its announcement.

In a June 2026 announcement, SEGA also reported a PlayStation 5 Metascore of 94. That is a publisher-reported score from that announcement, not a guarantee of a current aggregate or a prediction of an individual player’s reaction; scores can change. SEGA’s announcement provides that figure.
Is it a good next game for Persona 5 fans?
If what you liked about Persona 5 was deciding how to spend each day, building bonds, and shaping a party, Metaphor offers a related design sensibility with a fantasy setting and its own combat and customization hooks. If the specific appeal of Persona 5 was its contemporary setting, cast, or tone, the change of world may matter more than the shared creative lineage. Newcomers do not need to treat it as a sequel or play a Persona game first: it is presented as a standalone fantasy RPG.
