If you’re new to the series, start with Metro 2033 Redux, then play Metro: Last Light Redux. They are two sequential games—not alternate versions of the same story. The first follows Artyom’s mission in 2033; Last Light continues his story in 2034.

Which Metro game should you play first?
If you’re new to Metro
Play Metro 2033 Redux first. It establishes Artyom’s mission and the setting; Last Light Redux follows that story a year later. Starting with the first game gives you the intended narrative order.

Continue with Metro: Last Light Redux. It is the next game in the sequence, set in 2034.
Do the modes and extra content make Last Light the better choice?
Not by themselves. Last Light Redux offers Survival and Spartan play styles: Steam describes Survival as slower and more focused on survival horror, while Spartan emphasizes a more action-oriented stealth-and-combat experience. The product page also lists Ranger Mode and says the edition includes previously released DLC. These are reasons to compare its play options and included content with your preferences, not evidence that it is categorically better than Metro 2033 Redux.

Steam describes Last Light Redux as the “definitive version” of Metro: Last Light and says it was rebuilt in a newer iteration of the 4A Engine. That is the store’s promotional product copy, not an independent head-to-head assessment.
Should you buy one game or both?

Before buying, check the listing for your specific platform and region. Storefront availability and bundle contents can vary, so confirm that the offer includes both Redux titles on the system you intend to use.
What about the October 2026 update?
Deep Silver announced a free update for existing owners, planned for October 22, 2026 on PC and October 29, 2026 on consoles. The announcement describes hardware and quality-of-life improvements and says full patch notes would be available at launch. Check Deep Silver’s Metro Redux page for the announcement and current details; whether the update has released and its platform-specific changes should be verified there.

Is either Redux game objectively better?
The official descriptions explain story, edition changes, modes, and included content; they do not establish a controlled comparison of quality, difficulty, or atmosphere. Choose based on story order, whether you have played the first game, the modes and DLC that interest you, and the platform-specific offer—not on an unsupported claim that one is universally better.
