Last Light Redux also adds features and bundles its previously released DLC, but the documented changes are less sweeping. Both Redux games offer Survival and Spartan play styles, plus the more demanding Ranger Mode.
What changed between Metro 2033 and Metro 2033 Redux?
Metro 2033 received the most substantial overhaul. Deep Silver’s Xbox Store description says Redux was rebuilt in the Last Light engine and gameplay framework. A contemporaneous Game Informer comparison describes the first game gaining Last Light gameplay features, smarter AI, mask-wiping mechanics and animation, and refreshed visuals.

That makes 2033 Redux more than a graphics refresh: it brings the earlier campaign onto a later technical and gameplay foundation. The sources establish those broad changes, not a complete, level-by-level change log. Claims about every atmosphere, encounter, or level-layout difference should therefore be treated cautiously.
Survival, Spartan, and Ranger modes
Redux lets players choose between two play styles. Survival is intended for slower, more survival-horror-oriented play; Spartan is more action-focused. Ranger Mode is a separate challenge described by PLAION as removing the HUD and interface, making combat deadlier, and limiting resources. The Xbox listing for Metro 2033 Redux also identifies the Survival and Spartan options.
#1 Best Overall
- Immerse yourself in the Moscow Metro - witness One of the most atmospheric worlds in gaming brought to life on Nintendo Switch
- Brave the horrors of the Russian Apocalypse - equip your gasmask and an arsenal of hand-made weaponry as you face the threat of deadly mutants, human foes, and the terrifying environment itself
- Two campaigns, and all DLC included - Metro Redux includes two complete campaigns that combine to create One epic solo adventure, plus a further 10 hours of bonus content
- Two unique play styles: 'spartan' And 'survival' - approach the campaign as a slow burn survival horror, or tackle it with the combat skills of a spartan ranger in these two unique modes
Is Metro: Last Light Redux different from the original?
Yes, though the documented additions are more specific and less extensive than the rebuild of 2033. PLAION’s Last Light Redux game description lists new melee animations, the ability to check the watch and ammunition supplies while playing, and new full-body player animations.
Last Light Redux also includes previously released DLC, which PLAION describes as 10 hours of bonus single-player content. It adds Survival and Spartan play styles and Ranger Mode as well. The available feature description is not a comprehensive, platform-by-platform change log, so it supports neither calling Last Light Redux unchanged nor describing it as wholly redesigned.

What does Metro Redux include?
Metro Redux is the collection of Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux. The 2014 PlayStation announcement described both games as remastered and announced a boxed double pack. It also said Metro 2033 was coming to a PlayStation platform for the first time.
The same announcement specified 1080p and 60 frames per second on PS4 at launch in 2014. That is a historical claim about that platform and release, not a specification that applies to every current version. Likewise, collection contents and availability depend on platform, region, and format. For example, the Xbox Store listing identifies a bundle with both Redux titles; check the listing for your own platform and region before buying.

Original or Redux: which should you play?
- Choose Redux for the updated versions: it is the route to the rebuilt 2033 and the added features and bundled DLC documented for Last Light Redux.
- Choose a Survival play style for slower, survival-horror pacing or Spartan for a more action-oriented approach. Ranger Mode is for a harder, lower-interface challenge.
- Look for the original PC releases if original presentation matters to you. Deep Silver’s GOG preservation announcement says the original 2010 Metro 2033 and 2013 Metro: Last Light Complete Edition are available through GOG, with work to support modern PCs, including Windows 10 and 11, additional resolutions, modern controllers, and display options. Availability can vary over time and by region; this is not evidence that the original console editions are currently sold.
- Check the edition before purchasing. Confirm platform, region, physical or digital format, and included games or DLC in the current store listing; historical launch announcements do not establish present stock or availability.
Deep Silver calls Redux the “definitive” collection on its franchise page; that is the publisher’s characterization. For a practical comparison, the central distinction is clearer: 2033 was rebuilt on the later framework, while Last Light Redux received documented additions and included DLC.
